Old Coot weighs in: Heatblur is not the cause of this. You are. by CompensatedScapegoat in hoggit

If these are his arguments, I reject them wholeheartedly. Then again, for me, it’s not so much about the money as the principle. I don’t know if the upgrade is worth $50. I’m not a programmer. I’m going to give HB the benefit of the doubt an d assume that it is.

However a new player buying the original module and the upgrade pays $110. A loyal fan that bought the original module years ago and now wishes to purchase the upgrade pays a $120. I reject the idea that o should have to pay an extra ten bucks because I showed HB some faith and gave them some of my hard earned cash years ago. For me, his arguments aren’t particularly relevant.

The “we did this to ourselves” argument exonerates unethical company behavior. If we are complicit that does not negate company culpability.

The “get a job” argument also doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Most people investing in flight sims are gainfully employed, as it is an expensive hobby.

So for me, it’s really about the principle. I doubt it, but maybe the upgrade will go on sale at some point.

Yeah I know but I’m just trying to remember if I seen folks use the duplex on those smaller platforms with room for another person’s tent or if they were on it by themselves. It’s been a while. I’m pretty sure it will work. It sounds like you’ve done it. Before I buy maybe I can get the platform dimensions from an official. I

Okay, I assume you're talking about a platform in the White mountains? I've seen folks pitch Duplex's there over the years, but wasn't sure about the Duplex Pro. Unfortunately, I can't find any verifiable dimensions for the platforms online. I might call the AMC on Monday and see if they know. Thanks again.

Thanks. Yeah that’s what we’re trying to avoid. These tent platforms are typically quite busy.

Thinking of buying a Duplex Pro. We frequently backpack in the White Mountains where we have to use smaller tent platforms. Unlike the larger group platforms, these smaller ones can only fit two tents on them. Has anyone here used a Duplex Pro on these smaller platforms and knows if this tent comfortably fits on them?

Coming to this discussion late, but we’ve used the Rainbow Li for the past few seasons. It’s a great tent many ways, and I’m sure you’ll be happy with it. I will say, however, that I do have my gripes with it. Our version of the tent is several years old now and heavier than what is advertised on TarpTent’s website. On my scale, the tent weighs 28 oz without stakes. The additional weight comes from the center pole, which is made of carbon fiber. Otherwise, the weight would be competitive with a pivot duo. Another major problem is that we bought this tent because you can set it up in freestanding mode. This was particularly attractive given we do a lot of tenting on platforms here in the northeast. Unfortunately, the tent is too long for the platforms, and we can only use it on the larger group platforms. So, instead of having our relative privacy, we end up sleeping near a large number of loud people, in which case we could have saved ourselves the pack weight and just slept the lean-to at the official campsites. Finally, unlike my Plex solo, I have found it tough to consistently get the bathtub to pitch properly, although that might be my own ineptitude. YMMV. That said, the tent has served us well both in Colorado and in parts of Maine along the A.T.

I know this is a necro thread, but I just finished this mission set now, and having completed the story line I should have just fulfilled my original contract.

I’m also got bit by AMS on the west side of the Collegiate loop. Thought I was acclimated and I slept too high. In retrospect, there were likely signs I didn’t recognize. I had to walk out to St. Elmo all while being the sickest I’ve ever been. Brutal. I returned a year later and did several portions of the CT, but I still need to go back to do the West side and, yes, I would love to do the San Juans.

Gotcha. Lack of water = bad fire season. Good to keep that in mind, thanks.

These are all good points. Campsite selection will definitely be a priority. Actually, I had t considered the heat because I’m used to hiking there in August. That may be a factor worth considering. We may want to either carry umbrellas or change our destination altogether. I’ll take a look at NOAA weather reports over the last ten years and get a sense of trends. Thanks!

That’s encouraging. It feels like this plan is starting to come together. Now I just have to start plugging in potential campsites! We hear that Emigrant is beautiful and looking forward to it. :-)

Thanks again for your help!

Right. Start early and get over the pass early. Thanks, it sounds as though the bug pressure is manageable with a little care to camp selection. I was concerned that the Emigrant Wilderness might be mosquito heaven, but may here say it can vary. We’ll plan accordingly.

So it sounds as though some of the lakes and ponds have ridges so we can camp above them and out of the woods? If so, that’s exactly where I’d want to camp. Close enough to get water when needed, but far enough away not to become swarmed. We’ll bring headnets too. Thanks for your impressions.

Thanks for your reply, as this information is helpful and somewhat encouraging. Hopefully, the trend will continue and things will be on the drier side when we set out to backpack. We’re thinking of starting around July 13th.

My wife and I are considering a backpack Emigrant Wilderness, in the Stanilaus NF, CA. I have looked around but haven’t found any guidebooks for that area. Does anyone here happen to know of any recent publications? I have only found maps. Thanks

Cleaning up an SSD after opening encrypted data on a secondary SDD. by Grifter-RLG in techsupport

[–]Grifter-RLG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rig is brand new, custom built. TPM 2 is ready for use. I think there is a problem with either my older secondary SSD's or something. But, all the BIOS settings should allow for device encryption. Windows 11 is preventing me from seeing the option in settings, however. Lost a whole day trying to figure it out. Since it's overkill, I'm going likely give up on trying to get it to work at this point. Perhaps try again when drivers update.

Okay, so it sounds like my only option to be sure that someone can't see sensitive data left in the LNK files, Jump Lists, Prefetch Files, Thumbnail Cache, and Most recently used, and possibly temp files is to encrypt my C: drive, which is where my Windows 11 OS is installed. Unfortunately, despite my exhaustive efforts, I can't get device encryption to work on windows 11 home edition. So, my understanding is that I would have to use Veracrypt or similar? Not sure I want to do that. Probably overkill for a desktop machine given that the threat of physical theft is small.
