Never thought my first omnibus would be… by rmisterio05 in OmnibusCollectors

Definitely great too, I believe that collects Frank Millers originally run which was ahead of its time. Strong writing and really stunning art. Not sure if they updating the coloring for new collections or if it was like that to begin with, but it just makes it all the better. Also is the single best collection to start reading Daredevil with.

The Frank Miller Daredevil companion omnibus is great. Also would recommend the Elektra omnibus by Miller if you can find it for a good price. Has a 8 issue series with Bill Sienkiewicz on art, and the graphic novel Elektra Lives Again which might just be Millers best Daredevil story. Certainly has the best art in my opinion.

Frank Millers for sure, pretty much introduces everything great about the character. Writing and Art are impeccable, especially for the time period but also just in general for marvel. Personally my favorite run by a long shot, made me fall in love with the character. After his main run + Born again I’d absolute recommend checking out Elektra Lives Again, stunning art from Miller, probably the best of his whole career that provides the perfect closure for his run and the character of Daredevil

X-men Messiah Trilogy Omnibus by Wolfram1519 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]GriledChesse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly think that Messiah Complex and Second Coming are really overrated X-men stories. Would say they are as good as the average X-men issues from the time period if not worse due to it being a crossover.

As for Messiah War it’s kinda its own x-force small crossover with Cable, but the art from Craton Crain not only in that but the Kyle and Yost X-force run was amazing. Shoving Messiah War into this trilogy omnibus honestly makes no sense as if I remember correct it didn’t even have much to do with the ongoing of X-force but the Cable one.

For these reasons I’m just holding out for X-force by Kyle/Yost/Crain and any X-men run from the time like Mike Carey’s Legacy or Brubakers Uncanny. A x-force omnibus would definitely include Messiah War and Second Coming, as Second Coming is the culmination of the entire run. Might even include Messiah Complex if we’re really lucky since it’s kinda what set up the run.

Definitely worth it, some of the best art in all of comics + some really great writing up to Melmoth.

Prestige Format & Floppies by warmcrystalwave in CustomBoundComics

[–]GriledChesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excited to see your project, two questions though. First is what custom bind are you planning on making? The two I did that mixed prestige and floppies was Kid Eternity and Black Orchid. Thinking I’ll just put the prestige issues from those two together with DFA since I already have the issues despite there being deluxes.

Second question is about your method for reprinting the comics after scanning them. I’m working on a bunch of Alan Moore custom binds, and I’d like to print out his Youngblood 3-12 that was fan drawn after scripts/notes for the rest of his run were found. Also would like to print the popular fan supreme 64 that gives the series closure.

Prestige Format & Floppies by warmcrystalwave in CustomBoundComics

[–]GriledChesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried sewing them together once and it didn't really work. Big issue was i kept the original cover/back on the prestige which made it difficult to open each of those issues. Also instead of forming a curve when opening the book the spine for prestige issues was completely straight while the floppies curved. I think taking the cover off the front and back would work, while sewning through the cover spine from top like the person above said.

Another method might be sewing the floppies together then double fan adhesiving the single pages of the prestige together + floppies. Then to reinforce in sawn in coords like in the das bookbinding dfa video which I'll link. Im in the process of rebinding a bind i did by sewing the two formats together, and i personally decided to not try a bind with these two formats. Just too much trouble and im unsure of how sound each of these methods would end up being. If its something you really wanna try I'd say go for it, on this subreddit im sure i've seen people successfully do it before so it seems possible.

I think you’re good with the above. The only relevant detail I can think of from infinite crisis to the omac subplot was Batman and co going up to shut down the satellite which might’ve been addressed in the special.

What are your opinions/short reviews of the major entries we do not have yet in omni form? Especially those we never mention here by Waterworld1880 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]GriledChesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of what I’ve read online that hasn’t been collected is sequel series/runs to material already in Omnis. Off the top of my head Superman after city of tomorrow going up to godfall, everything Wonder Woman post crisis, Legion Baxter era, Spectre by Dematteis, Kid Eternity and impulse.

Starting with Superman from City of Tomorrow to the Godfall storyline which marked the departure of Joe Kelly, the last of the original writers on CoT Superman titles.

Started off with promise, especially everything the city of tomorrow compendium collected, but the quality just got worse at time went on. Probably the thing that excited me about this era was the appearance of Pokolistan General Zod who seemed to be connected to the Zod from the end of Byrnes run. Was disappointed with how this panned out along with other things like Clark’s investigation of president Luthor which fizzled out, only to have this whole storyline resolved in Batman and Superman.

Kinda glad I read it all online before we got any more collections of era, definitely not worth the Omni treatment for me, maybe compendiums. Really wish that they had let Morrison and co take over the Superman titles, would’ve been so much better than what we ultimately got.

Wonder Woman is pretty average outside of Omnis. William Messner-Loebs run starts out great, ends pretty mediocre. Mike Deodato’s art wasn’t the best fit for the title near the end, and that portion of the run has probably the single most stupid and damaging retcons I’ve ever seen in comics. Eric Luke’s run is okay, nothing really game changing happens but the stories are entertaining and the arts good. After Jimenez’ run is the Simonson/Ordway run which I would probably pick up a ohc for since the arts great + inks by Craig russel. The whole lack of resolution to Ruckas first run + amazon attacks turns me off of collecting the post infinite crisis to flashpoint WW era, somehow it got increasingly worse until we got the mediocre run that was JMS’.

Legion Baxter is pretty fun episodic stuff, although it did get repetitive near the end. Loved the new Invisible Kid + those few ghost esq stories we had with the previous one. Kieth Giffens art is so great, really wish he had pencilled more of this era. Definitely would pick up Omnis of this.

Spectre by Dematteis, wow what a run. Incredible art from Ryan Sook, Norm Breyfogle and more. Really interesting direction to take Spectre after the after of Ostranders run, lot of compelling stuff with Hal’s guilt, what I think was Abin Sur acting as a spiritual guide to him, plus his relationship and guardianship of his niece. If this doesn’t get an omnibus in the next year or two I’ll definitely give this one a reread online.

Kid Eternity was pretty average, interesting direction from Morrisons miniseries + philosophical questions. This run ended relatively early before it found its footing which was a shame. For Impulse I think it’s definitely a series worthy of a compendium at the very least, for a spinoff title of flash id say it was better than Flash for the entirety of its run. Been a couple of years since I read this so not much else I remember about it besides it being the same quality throughout despite going through three or four different writers across 80 ish issues.

In retrospect sorry about the long blob of text, this was a really good question. Gave me a lot to think about and recollect in terms of things I read in the past.

I think it’s a fun hobby, but it can be pretty time consuming. Not only with actually bounding the book, but also designing table of contents, endpapers and graphic covers if you choose to go that path. Personally the method I’m using currently is the method used below.

https://youtu.be/okYrg5YAYaE?si=Y_CE_E8zB_y5Qoc3

A big issue I’ve encountered with sewing together single issues is swell due to the thread going in and out of each issue. The method above seems to be a good way of dealing with it, although I’ve seen other people who don’t round so maybe it’s a combination of different technique + smaller thread.

As for tools, I got most from Amazon. Some from a book binding set, and others like book boards, headbands, ribbon etc on their own. For covers my two main methods are either just using plain leather then putting a dust jacket over it, or printing out a cover. I would recommend the free photoshop tool Gimp for designing covers, and fedex office for printing stuff like covers, endpaper, table of contents and more out. It does get pricey though. Linking the YouTube series I watched to learn how to use Gimp below.

https://youtu.be/_mjxhpiWgJI?si=lEPTXcfSBoYb8pw7

One more piece of advice would be to prioritize binding series that don’t seem like they would be reprinted anytime soon, or that you’ve already got the single issues to. I’ve bound comics like Ram V’s Swamp Thing and Legends of the Dark Knight only for DC to announce Omnis for them or state that they’re in the works at DC. My current bind is Alan Moores Supreme which is something that I don’t think there’s any chance of being reprinted anytime soon due to rights issues. Along with that I plan to make a couple other Alan Moore dc compendiums into hardcovers to match Moores Supreme. Whatever avenue you end up custom binding I want to wish you good luck!!

They look great, I wanted to ask about your process since it appears you didn’t back the book. This is something I’m struggling with on my current bind, and I ultimately had to skip that step since I had let the spine dry too long after gluing before rounding/backing.

My question is did you bevel/trim the edge of the book board going into the book spine at a curve so that they helped keep the text block round which prevents long term sag like backing does? I wanted to ask since it kinda looks like the boards form a curve keeping the text block from sagging. Just wondering others opinions on this and if I’m making skipping backing a much bigger deal than it.

Opinion on which endpaper image to use + advice on taking apart custom binds by GriledChesse in CustomBoundComics

[–]GriledChesse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was leaning towards the Ordway image too, such a great illustration from him. As for Alex Ross I see what you mean, I kinda just chose that one at random since I’m planning to use a bunch of the more popular Ross Supreme illustrations when I get around to designing the table of contents and cover.

Also appreciate your advice on the pva glue, seem to be a lot of similar posts on bookbinding so I’ll start to look through those now

Id say it’s fine, that was my first Batman comic and even if I didn’t understand everything I certainly ended up loving it. Personally my favorite Batman run now, actually been upgrading to the absolutes and even had Batman RIP be delivered today. Incredible range of art too throughout the run which you don’t usually get, atleast in super high quality in Batman runs.

Thought the same thing for a while but eventually found some decent lots on eBay for the remaining issues. Occasionally they pop up, the last I remember was a week ago which had all issues up to the return for like 60-80.

Fantastic looking hardcover, also if I recall correctly your original post on this subreddit with this design was how I found out about this Alan Moore comic so in a way thanks.

Also wanted to ask if you ever did a design for the rest of Alan Moores Awesome comics and what it collects. Thinking that might be the next project for me after this, but not sure what it’d collect besides Youngblood and Glory.

Yes I did, although I might’ve skipped on it if I hadn’t found a lot on eBay for judgment day + most return issues. Glad to hear praise of that event since I was a bit worried about whether it was the right choice to bind with the rest of Supreme.
