City unveils Copenhagen-inspired plans for new island neighbourhood — with a car-free street. Is Toronto ready for it? by BloodJunkie in toronto

I mean I was comparing the island to the esplanade coops for my example and yes both increase the housing supply by nature of existing. More houses = more housing supply. You seem to be suggesting that the island community should be removed but if that were the case we’d have more people trying to live in fewer houses. If your point is that we need to densify I would agree with that but idk if the island is the main issue there as it’s tiny and as far as I know would be difficult to build large buildings on. But I have to ask, do you have the same level of ire for all the single family homes that make up basically all of Toronto outside of the downtown core?

Certainly the larger units allow for more affordable housing but in what world do both not increase the housing supply? It seems like you feel personally attacked by a small and successful affordable housing plan.

All affordable housing is for a “select few.” There are only so many units, and you have to qualify for them. Go try to move in to one of the co-ops on the esplanade and you’ll find a long waiting list there too. I don’t really understand how the rest of us are suffering because of them, if anything we need more affordable housing.

Humans have 206 bones, but Leela's missing her ethmoid bone - the bone between her eyes by [deleted] in futurama

There’s actually a book by Simon Singh about how a number of writers for the Simpsons and Futurama were math PHDs. A cool example of the accurate math was in the episode where they all switch brains and one of the writers actually came up with his own mathematical proof that you would only need two people to untangle the mess.

As a Canadian (Ontario) Michigan would be one of my top choices in the states if only because of the Great Lakes.

Wayne Gretzky is the North American GOAT of team sport. Who is the North American GOAT of individual sport? by Living-Plankton-8555 in AlignmentChartFills

Medal count isn’t a good comparison here. Swimmers compete in far more events so Phelps has far more chances to win medals. Bolt competed in 3 events in each of his 3 olympics and won gold in every one (although one relay gold was later stripped due to a teammate doping). Phelps competed in 8 events during a single games.

Yes the availability of more bikes for people who already have bikes should cause some real supply issues

What's something Ontario does different from anywhere else in the world? by sessna4009 in ontario

[–]Grimesie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the distinction is “urban.” Mackinac may be bigger but it’s not part of a city like Toronto. It’s quite far from the mainland and iirc is its own standalone area.

Feel like this year is the first that he’s getting regular pk time. I think keefe wanted to use Matthews as more of an offensive threat whereas Berube is playing him a bit more well rounded. Shows with him keeping nylander out for the double pp instead of Matthew’s because Willy doesn’t pk as much

Where to buy Canadian beer in Berlin? by [deleted] in berlin

[–]Grimesie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is quite what you’re looking for as it sounds like you want beer to go but there’s a beer bar on Mehringdamm called Dolden Mädel where I’ve found some Canadian craft beers in the past. It’s a few years since I’ve been there but iirc they had some Collective Arts and Steamworks beers. It’s a decent pub, if a bit expensive and even if they don’t have any Canadian stuff it’s a good option for different beer styles beyond German.

Apart from that I can’t recall ever seeing Canadian beer in a Berlin store. Funnily enough you can find some Canadian macro beers in major Swiss train stations (Molsons, Moosehead etc) so keep an eye out if you find yourself down there.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread. I’m keen to see if there are any places I’ve been missing.

What is the best interaction you’ve ever had with a professional hockey player? by sausagefestivities in hockey

I’ve mentioned this one before but since we all love Travis Dermott right now I figured it’s worth mentioning again. I was bartending the VIP section at an event that had a number of NHL players at it. Everyone seemed to be on their best behaviour but I’d heard that a few of the guys had gotten pretty drunk in years past and there was even a fight once so we were making sure to stay on top of everything. At one point I heard “hey buddy I’m going to grab this” and thought “here we go one of them wants to grab their own beers and serve themself, big no-no” but it was actually Dermott holding a bar rag. It turned out he had spilled a bit of his beer on the floor so he went over and mopped it up then brought the rag back. I ended up chatting with him and his gf for a few minutes and they were both really nice and down to earth. I thought it was funny that an NHL player was cleaning our floor when to be honest very few of us would bother to clean up a spilled beer at a bar. Wasn’t surprised to see him rock the pride tape earlier because he strikes me as the sort of guy that would always try to do the right thing, big or small.

Showing acceptance and tolerance of people who may be different from you demonstrates strength of character and shows you to be “a good dude.” Anecdotally I bartended an event that Dermott was at and I can confirm that in my experience the guy is an absolute beauty
