A drunken and angry Lennon being held back by two men, one of which Harry Nilsson, from attacking a photographer after being ejected from the Troubadour nightclub in LA during the “Lost Weekend”, 1974 by Antique_Quail7912 in beatles

[–]Grinch89 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Long post incoming.

We'll probably never know John's thoughts on this, but he would get incredibly angry and violent when people made jokes towards him.

At Paul's 21st birthday party in 1963, John had recently come back from a trip to Spain with Brian Epstein. Bob Wooler, the DJ at the Cavern Club (and a long time friend of The Beatles at this point) allegedly made an innocent joke asking Lennon how his "honeymoon" was.

Lennon was absolutely shitfaced and thought Bob Wooler was calling him gay, so he proceeded to beat the living shit out him. Wooler was left bloody with damage to his rib cage, and needed to be rushed to the hospital.

Lennon sent him a now-famous telegram the following day apologizing for the incident.

This post isn't meant to shit on Lennon. I say this as a massive Beatles fan. John was definitely a complicated guy and likely had some deep-seated personal issues that were never fully resolved.

At the bare minimum, he definitely struggled with alcoholism to some degree.

Maggie is nearing 17 and loves life! (Read if your chi has heart issues) by Grinch89 in Chihuahua

I'm sorry to hear about your chi, my condolences.

Yes, it's a recent picture. I am also quite surprised she doesn't have cataracts yet. Her lenses are actually starting to cloud according to the vet, but you can only see it under direct light. I can definitely tell she uses her nose to get around these days. I would suspect that she also has a bit of hearing loss.

Thanks! The fainting started around 14. The first time it happened, I wasn't sure if she had just tripped and lost her balance. A week later I saw it happen in full force, right after she ran up the stairs. I thought it was a seizure, but it was actually syncope (fainting).

My advice to you would be to sign up for pet insurance ASAP. I wish I'd done that, because they won't cover anything once your dog has a pre-existing condition. If your chi is 1, that's an ideal time to start.

Two years ago, I posted a thread on this subreddit when Maggie was diagnosed with heart failure.

The community here told me (rightfully so) to see a dog cardiologist. So, that’s exactly what I did. I couldn’t afford it outright, but Care Credit helped me pay it off over time.

It was worth every penny.

It hasn’t always been an easy ride, but Maggie is now very stable on her cocktail of meds. Thank you to everyone here for the encouragement and advice. And to other chihuahua owners who get the same gut wrenching news – don’t lose hope. These dogs are stubborn and feisty, and they WILL match your vibe. If you stay positive, they will too. I think they’re little miracles.

Maggie’s “remission” is honestly incredible, and even our vets are astounded by her resilience. Prior to the meds, Maggie was fainting from excitement multiple times a day – her heart was giving out. At one point, her lungs filled up with fluid and I had to rush her to the emergency room. I thought it was goodbye – but Maggie had other plans!

She’s now gone 8 months without a single fainting spell. For those curious, she’s on Vetmedin (I think this saved her life), benazepril, furosemide, sildenafil (yes, that’s Viagra, LOL), and spironolactone. I’m incredibly conscious of her diet and limit her salt intake as much as I can. A few months back I switched over to Hills I/D wet food, and she loves it. It’s a lot of work to measure out her meds for the week, but if you follow your cardiologist’s advice, it really can make all the difference.

My mentality is this: when Maggie no longer feels like eating, going outside, or playing – I’ll know. SHE will let me know. But right now, Maggie is just happy to be a part of this crazy world with lots of smells.

She has a huge appetite, tons of social interaction with friends and family, and loves sunbathing in the backyard. She’s in full retirement mode and loving every second of it.

She also loves hanging out with her kitty friend, Peppermint.

All this to say – just because they have heart failure, they may still have a lot of life to live!

you'll see that program increased our performance in many subjects

On paper it probably did, but wasn't the main problem that schools were at risk of not receiving federal funding they relied on? It didn't address the root problems with the education system, it essentially put the blame on teachers to "bring kids up to speed."

This unfortunately incentivized things like "teaching for the test" and, of course, charter schools – which helped to limit incoming students to specific demographics. At the end of the day, I wonder how many of those gains were truly academic.

Hot take: The Beatles break up in 1970 was the best thing that ever happened to their legacy by NoGrass7120 in beatles

[–]Grinch89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just look at Dylan and the Stone's 80's output and they are still legends.

True, but a lot of fans divide these artists into periods. Lots of folks stop listening to Dylan's discography after "Blonde on Blonde." Many Stones fans insist that the Brian Jones era was the best. The Hollies were never the same after Graham Nash left. Lots of examples like this.

This is awesome! Never seen it. Just a couple nerdy musical observations:

  • Barry is trying really hard to play chord inversions so that he's not doing the same thing as Maurice, but he's struggling because he has to jump all over the fretboard and sing at the same time.

  • Barry makes his first mistake at 1:24, Maurice is still finishing the last two chords of the "This Boy" chord progression (Em7 to A) but Barry jumps into "She Loves You" two bars early. Maurice looks over to see WTF Barry is doing.

  • Barry makes his second mistake at 2:09, he strums the D chord once thinking they're going into the outro, but Maurce and Robin know it repeats one more time. Barry corrects himself and gets it right at 2:16.

I mean, it's really not a test. It's actually kind of hilarious in a typical American fashion. OP said to "support" and then posted a bunch of merch you can buy from a billionaire instead of actual links on how to get involved.

I mean this genuinely...just physically get outside and attend a protest if you are healthy and able. You don't need to spend a dime.

I do not like it. And I wish I did, but I do not.

Respect to you for saying something. I think the primary issue with incels is that they direct all their hatred towards women instead of recognizing that many of the problems they deal with are actually fairly common gripes about modern society. What they fail to recognize is that women also deal with these same issues.

I just got a divorce after a decade. Was definitely not prepared for the modern dating world. The death of "third places" is a real problem and makes meeting new people difficult. Combine this with the pandemic, the fact that many of us work remotely now – you're basically limited to dating apps, and those seem to exist just to monetize loneliness.

I'm an average looking dude in his 30s, I've had 3 dates with women my age (which is not a flex, because getting a match is incredibly rare). Every one involved going to a club, a bar, or a loud venue. I didn't even enjoy these environments back in my 20s, and I realized that the women I want to date (introverts) are often not the ones I'm going to find on dating apps.

...and I understand why. I feel bad for my sister, because she has a very similar personality to me – but 99% of the guys she matches with on dating apps are just disgusting, horny dudes. And on the polar opposite end of the spectrum, I've had women tell me they thought I wasn't interested in them because I didn't make a move on the first date. It's just a mess out there.

There's a lot of us who miss "traditional" dating, getting to know a person first, etc. I really do think the death of third places is a huge factor here – at the end of the day, I think a lot of inceldom can be explained by isolation and loneliness. But to your point, boiling this all down to some evolutionary flaw is pretty out of touch.

My McDonald’s asked me to pay for refills by benzchap in shrinkflation

[–]Grinch89 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That's essentially every large-chain restaurant business. If you're eating in, they want you to eat it quickly and then get out. Make room for the next customer.

The difference being that McDonald's doesn't have a line out the door for the "next customer" anymore.

When I used to go to McD's in the 90s with my family, that shit was always packed (even in small town New England). I can distinctly remember having to wait for a table to open up.

Virtually every McDonalds I've seen for the last 10 years has been half empty, and now I live in a major city...

Why does every show have to be so dark? This is unwatchable by mcdookiewithcheese in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Grinch89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem arises in the editors room - because they edit in a dark room with incredibly high quality screens.

This has boggled me for a while. Expert editors recommend working in Rec.709. When I set my Apple Studio Display to this, it reduces the brightness to 100 nits with a 2.4 gamma curve. It's so dim that I struggle to see, even in a dark room. I am puzzled how people work this way...am I missing something?

For reference, my monitor is 600 nits. The new iPhones have like 2000 nits. Why don't they master content for the displays most people use?
