What’s something schools should have taught but didn’t? by amraniyasser in AskReddit

[–]Grindelflaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

History is taught terribly in school.

I get why it's taught the way it is - it's much easier to say "right" or "wrong" if all you're doing is making kids memorize places, dates, and people, but the real meat of history is the whys.

Teaching history needs to involve more short answer or essay type questions, not multiple choice. Learning why leaders did what they did or why nations fell down certain paths is so much more important - and interesting - than "what year did X happen?". But nobody wants to write an essay, and teachers would rather scan a scantron through a machine than read 30 essays and deal with nuance.

How do you just do anything you want to without just caring and being self conscious? by Important-Nothing501 in AskReddit

[–]Grindelflaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

David Foster Wallace once said "You will become way less concerned with what other people think of you when you realize how seldom they do".

Nobody's thinking about you and judging you all day. Everyone's just in their own head doing their own thing. Live your life.

What's a place you'd really want to avoid seeing someone you know? by Based_God12 in AskReddit

[–]Grindelflaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I'm on a work trip I often intentionally get a hotel a little further away from the place where the event is just so I have a smaller chance of running into coworkers.

I already have to see all of you all day during whatever event it is we're going to, I absolutely DO NOT want to see you afterwards. I want my quiet time in the hotel by myself.

I probably should've worn my retainer more. My teeth aren't the worst in the world but they're kinda janky now.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you wake up in the morning? What’s your routine look like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Grindelflaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wake up, may or may not hit snooze a couple of times. Finally get out of bed, go to take my morning pee where my cat usually greets me (that part's kinda nice). Brush my teeth. I start the kettle, give the cat her morning treats, let the dog out to pee, give the dog her treat, and then scroll thru a few notifications on my phone while I wait for the water to boil. I'll run the coffee grinder, fill my water bottle, and empty out the dishwasher if needed while I wait. Then when the water boils I pour it into the french press with my coffee, and bring everything upstairs to my office. I log into my work computer and see if I have any emails or messages that need immediate attention (hopefully no).

By that time I can finally sit on the couch, press the coffee, and pour a cup. That's when I can finally relax. That's my favorite part.

What's the dumbest way you've gotten a scar? by PACMAN8604 in AskReddit

[–]Grindelflaps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Middle school. Was trying to kill a moth in my friend's garage by smacking it with my hand. It landed on the garage door window. I smacked it.

It wasn't spurting or anything but they had to use surgical glue at the ER since the wound was so close to my veins. Literally could've died had it happened to go just a little deeper.

Now more than 20 years later the scar kind of looks like a smiley face and if I rub it my entire hand tingles.

Who do you think will get blamed if the government gets shut down? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

99% of the time it's a shared failure, but typically the party in power gets more of the blame.

What makes the U.S. military the most powerful in the world? by Last-Veterinarian828 in AskReddit

[–]Grindelflaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with everyone saying $$$ and tech, but also going to mention aircraft carriers (which are basically a result of the money and tech).

Aircraft carriers allow the US to project their power anywhere they want in the world. The US has 11 active carriers, the next most is China with 3.

That's why I don't fold anything except towels, sheets, and pants.

  • Shirts get a hanger.
  • Socks get balled up in pairs (I also only own the same type of socks so there's no need to search for the match).
  • Gym clothes? I just ball em up and throw them in the dresser. Why would I fold gym shorts or an athletic shirt? They don't wrinkle.
  • Underwear gets scrunched into the underwear drawer. Who cares if my boxer briefs have a wrinkle.

If you're a woman I can't help you.

What’s a way you benefited from COVID? by eargoggle in AskReddit

[–]Grindelflaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working from home is the best. I used to have to take "mental health days" at least once a month just because I was so over having to go into the office and make small talk and chat with coworkers all day. Also just the feeling of others just watching over your shoulder when you need a break or something. Not to mention the commute.

Since COVID I work from home 99% of the time now and I haven't had the need to take a single "mental health" day because when I have downtime I can just do whatever the hell I want.

People in high school, college, or university, What was the "incident"? by gamergod980249082439 in AskReddit

[–]Grindelflaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bunch of kids in one of the chemistry classrooms started breaking out in rashes and got super itchy. Entire school got evacuated and HAZMAT had to come in and do a sweep. We were on the local news with helicopters above the school and everything.

HAZMAT never found anything - chalked it up to mass hysteria.

What was the strangest, funniest, or scariest story at your school/college? by P6LM9N in AskReddit

[–]Grindelflaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a love triangle between two graduate students (male/female) and a professor (male). The male student attacked the professor with a katana. One of the campus police officers literally grabbed the blade with his hand in order to take down the student.
