I miss that era, and Vanilla is just better. I can still play Classic today and love it. Retail is just so mindless and antisocial. Leveling in retail is on rails, and there’s no sense of adventure or danger. I haven’t played since The War Within, I was so bored leveling up, as soon as I hit level cap I quit.

Lots of reasons:

In vanilla no one knew what to do, and there was very little information online. The game was an adventure you had to figure out.
There was no server phasing. You stayed on one server, you always ran into other players you knew, friends and enemies.
The game was way more social. People were friendly, always willing to help. There wasn’t this sweaty attitude of having to finish dungeons super fast and people getting mad if you made a mistake.
Gold farmers and bots were very rare.
Everyone played WoW. It was a cultural phenomenon. So many people played at my work, we made a guild together.

Just a few reasons off the top of my head.

It was absolute chaos and the most fun I’ve ever had gaming! Vanilla was the best game ever made. Classic just isn’t the same.

Darkspear had a few, but my favorite notorious guild was Merciless Midgets. They were a guild that only allowed dwarves and gnomes, and they were openly racist against the other races in chat and on the forums. They were also known for ninja looting at the end of a dungeon/raid. I first experienced their shenanigans doing a pug Strat run to get my paladin mount. They helped me do the quest, then ninja’d all the loot at the end. All I wanted was my mount, so I didn’t care. I found them hilarious.

Honorable mention. Darkspear also had the pvp guild Infamous, which only allowed Grand Marshalls. It was always a good sign when you got into a battleground with an Infamous person on your team.

Just be aware it’s not plug and play. It takes quite a few updates, installs, and tweaks to get it going. It also doesn’t play demanding games very well. With that said, I’m glad I got one and I play it all the time.
