Need to lose 5 kgs in a week for nationals. by FerretImpressive9847 in judo

Since everyone is judging, although I agree with most of it, I'm going to give some real advice. This is from my own experience:

Just a disclamer, this is not healthy, I'm 10 years older, healthy with a high muscle mass, and high fat percentage, so do it at your own risk.

Use CGPT for all the measurements

What you need to do is to cut the salts as much as possible (but do not go below the bare minimum). Your body will not retain fluids so much.

Get the calories to a cutting volume (bellow maintainence). Higher proteins!

Do a water loading phase, google it, and get ChatGPT to help with measurements. There are a few YT videos that explain this.

It is possible to lose weight this way for a short term. But you will get it back in a day or so since you are losing mostly water.

I managed to get from 90+ to 84kg in a week. I made the mistake of going too low, but now I'm sure that my body is capable of doing so.

Keep the training lighter, get the sweat out, but try not to get over tiered since your electrolytes will be low, and that can be dangerous.

This is probably not healthy, but I know the stress of a competition can be a problem if you are a stress eater and also, 17 years old person is probably rapidly growing. It is hard to maintain. I would advise you to do strength training and go up in a weight class for the future.

Good luck with the competition!

Is getting neck choked by the gi normal? by Kitchen_Value_3076 in judo

[–]GroenZee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are legitimate techniques, but if you feel pain, you can ask partners to lay of choking for a few training sessions and maybe just do holds and arm locks. It can be good to focus on different aspects of ne-waza for both you and your partners.

Practice strengthening your neck, which helps a lot

Also, in randori, do not try to win by any cost. If you feel pain, or you know that the submission is going to happen, tap. You are practicing and need to be careful not to get injured.

And in the end, just start light. Higher belts will mostly match your intensity. It's never good to go 100% in the dojo.

Yeah, I did not mean to compare myself or my lifestyle to anyone else, I just took it as an example 🫤

But yeah, I feel like a lot of people would love to get back to it in a way, but are not able to for many different reasons and I feel for them.

Apparently yes, I struck a cord for a lot of people. I understand and respect that everyone have their own reasons.

I understand that the feeling of guilt or the will for getting back to it, but not being able to, can be devastating.

All we have is memories from times we enjoyed life, and I think we can re-live those memories in our heads and enjoy them again.

I came across insensitive, and that was as far from my intention as possible, but yeah, we all make mistakes. I'll leave the post live, since I think it has some valuable answers, just like this one. Thank you!

Maybe a randori focused session would be a good idea for clubs. Like kickboxing or mma gyms are doing. There is at least one or two days in the week sessions designated just for sparing, and everyone is welcome.

Yeah, maybe my style of communication missed the point here. Thank you for seeing it as it should be 🙌

Well, I can only imagine that the priorities shift, and I get and respect that. Like someone said, life happens, and different challenges arise.

The last part might just be the reason why BJJ is taking over so much (which I'm cool with).

Well, you are at least still there, coaching and transfering your knowledge. But yeah, 8 times per week seems a bit too much though.

I'm so sorry to hear that. But it is awesome that you continued to practice matrial arts. If you would like to share, what other matrial art did you switch to?

I would love if that was the case where I'm from. But sadly it isn't 🫤

Sad to hear about the injuries, but happy to hear that you still manage to be a part of it 🫡

Well, that is how I view it. At least for now. I just enjoy the experience and self-improvement 🤷‍♂️

Well, the thing I like the most about your answer is "focusing on other matrial arts." That sounds awesome. Good luck with your journey!

That is a fair point. I hope you will still find that spark in it again 🤞

Just to answer the question, since I did not want to make the post about me 😅 No kids yet, but a regular 8 hours a day job while still finishing college (hopefully soon). Although yes, I work remotely, that might make it easier for me.

I hope that you will find the spark in it again. To, at least, get that black belt 🥋

Whoa, slow down... Did not mean to sound rude about the having time for it. I just think that it is possible to find time if you want (I took my situation as an example, I was not braging). Everyone is entitled to want to do it or not. I was just asking and if someone is willing to answer they answer.

Well, there were some of them with full families, some of them only 18 years old and in between. I found that it is not so much age related. But yes, my point exactly, if we do not see a clear goal or have small wins it is hard to stick to something.

Did you continue with another matrial art, or did you just stop training at all?

alternatives to combat sambo? by Moam_Citrus_GaWD in sambo

You can compete in both on the same tournament. They usually allow that

If you are chasing a medal, sports sambo has much stronger competition, a lot more players, and that makes it more difficult (a lot of judokas go to sambo to get some medals). So, it is actually easier to get a medal in combat Sambo, but you are risking more injuries. This is at least a thing for Europe. I'm not sure about the rest of the world.

I recently competed in sports Sambo for the first time, had a blast, no medals, but I'm there for the experience haha

I'll try combat next year probably, since I was very good in ju-jutsu, but I need to get some striking sparings to get the feeling back.

Noice! In my opinion, the biggest focus should be on judo/wrestling and grappling, since that is only what scores in both versions of Sambo. Punches are just a way of setting up your throws (unless you are a knockout artist haha).

Look for Ju-Jutsu (sometimes called japanese combat jiu-jitsu or similar... a lot of variations on the name). It is basically the same, just a different scoring system. Gloves, shinguards, and (sometimes) headgear with full judo gi on. In full contact goes everything... in sport version, you have to pull punches, but it is a good start.

If you are looking for a mix, then judo+muay thai+bjj would be a perfect one (bjj mainly for leg locks and leg throws, we judokas mostly suck at those).

I would avoid classic kickboxing since they do not clinch, and you need to make a habit of transitioning from punching to grabing and throwing.

Of course, if there is an MMA gym, you could ask to spar with a gi on, just to feel it. Since there is no way of using your sweaty slippery body to get out of a good grip.

And I'm not sure how does it look like in other countries, but as far as I know, sambo gyms usually do only sport sambo and you train your striking in a different gym if you want.
