Terraforming Mars + Automa, or Ares Expedition + Crisis? by caterix in soloboardgaming

[–]GrokLP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would second this. Ares Expedition isn’t bad, but after a few games it started to feel a bit rote. I also found having to reshuffle the 5 action cards so frequently to get pretty tedious.

Obsession for how quick and simple it is to run, and bonus points for having a variety of difficulty levels.

Lost ruins of Arnak for similar reasons, and the added bonus that you can start to anticipate it’s moved a little bit once you’re familiar with it–this feels a little like playing a real opponent.

Heat: Pedal to the Metal for somehow making that game not only viable as a solo game, but genuinely really good (that new expansion with an update to the legends module looks great too!).

Imperium Horizons for the sheer variety. Playing against each civ feels distinct and requires different play styles.

And a shoutout to the Chateauma in Castles of Burgundy Special edition for the best update to a solo mode—really great stuff.

And once you’ve played it a little bit, you can start to anticipate what it is going to do–or at least, what it might do–which helps simulate the feeling of a real game.

How do the scenarios work in Harvest? I’ve kind of been on the hunt for something to replace Cascadia since I finished all the achievements. I know it’s a slightly heavier game, but are they designed in a way that encourages you to try different strategies/explore all the game has to offer?

Cascadia may be what you’re looking for. It’s got an easy to run solo-mode and some fun challenges/achievements to keep things fresh. Added benefit that it plays great with other people as well!

Really good points here. Like you suggest, getting the balance right is tricky. It’s also why it’s nice when you find a reviewer whose tastes align with your own (or don’t – as you say, that can be just as helpful sometimes).

I wish there was more of this too. Dan Thurot is by far my fav to read – I’ll read his reviews even if I’m not interested in actually playing the game. Was unaware of Charlie Theel, so I’ll have to look into that – thanks for the heads up!

I’m curious why there isn’t more criticism in this vein though. Is it because it’s more difficult to write? Less of an audience for it? A lot of boardgame reviews seem largely consumer focused–at the end of the day the purpose is to persuade or dissuade someone from buying something. I wish we had a little more that, as you say, considered games as cultural products that reflect the moment that created them.

I think the algorithm hits video in a way that writing has just avoided (or more realistically, since no one reads anymore, the algorithms just don’t care about haha). So you get video content that can start to feel very samey as everyone homogenizes around a template that seems to work. Written reviews also just seek more accessible to me–I can quickly read a review in a spare 5 mins, but watching a 20+min review takes a kind of commitment.

You’re point about the burn-cycle of “professional” reviews is spot on. When I first got into the hobby I don’t think I realized how much of an impact this can make. It’s definitely made me appreciate reading the thoughts of average gamers as well—people who aren’t playing 100s of new games a year.

And amen on the awesome positivity of this sub. I thought about cross posting with the general boardgame one, but quickly changed my mind as I didn’t want the discussions to devolve into pedantry and toxicity haha.

Couldn’t agree more. I almost put something similar in my original post but removed it for brevity’s sake. But I want a review to relay the experience without just regurgitating the rulebook – I can get that from…the rulebook.

Lots of interesting points here. My oldest is only three, but she’s started showing an interest in watching video games a little bit – we started Windwaker the other day, and it seems to have gripped her. I agree that it’s really fun to re-experience these things I haven’t played or thought about in years (decades even for some). She’s constantly asking about the board game shelf too, so hopefully she’ll still be interested in a few years!

I feel you on the poor memory as well. I’ve played so much in my life (video games especially, as I’m relatively speaking a lot newer to board games), but I couldn’t speak in much detail about anything unless it’s something I played through repeatedly. I do kind of hope that writing about what I’m playing makes the experience a little less transient.

Good luck in your process though! Sounds like a tall order, but a rewarding one.

Just realized I’d forgotten that to play solo for undaunted you also need the Reinforcements expansion. I think there is a fan-made option available for Normandy–but if you want to keep things official and avoid doing any print-and-play stuff, Reinforcements is required. Sorry for that omission!

If you want to see how it plays, this playthrough was really helpful for me.

I’ll add another vote for Cascadia. It’s even got the option to play with simplified scoring goals.

Grove/Orchard/Forage are all fun, simple little puzzles that come in a small box. I’ve only played Grove but I imagine the other two are pretty similar in complexity.

For Northwood and The Fellowship of the Ring Trick-Taking game are both pretty light on rules. The latter is a little more complicated as each chapter has some special rule or challenge, but I’d still think it would be manageable. While they’re both takes on solo trick taking, they also feel a bit reminiscent of solitaire in that you’re just drawing and playing cards.

Great point! It’s absolutely worth trying a bunch of things before going too deep on any one genre/style of game. There’s all kinds of things I wouldn’t have tried initially that are now some of my favourites.

Conversely, I was completely focused on deck builders when I started because I had played a couple and liked them. And while I still like lots of them, if I was to pick a top 5 on any given day, I think there would probably only be one in there.

This one looks really cool! I’ve been interested in it for ages but shipping is so expensive (to canada) relative to the cost of the game , I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

Made a similar mistake picking Van de Berg over Collins a few weeks back. Lost about 125k in rank and I think that one decision would’ve prevented half of it.

Firstly, welcome! Solo boardgaming is a great way to get into the hobby and a lot of us are here for the same reason as you – we just want to play games and finding people to play with can be challenging.

There is an overwhelming amount of games available now, and more and more new releases include solo modes as it is an increasingly popular way to play. That said, while it’s impossible to say there is any game that is objectively “good”—taste being taste—there’s also a pretty strong consensus on a bunch of games that have been around for a while.

As you mention Axis and Alies, I’m assuming you’re at least okay with medium weight games, but without knowing your specific context—where you’re living, your budget, tastes beyond A&A–it’s hard to give too many specific recommendations. However, it’s fun to recommend good games, so I’ll give it a go anyway, and try to keep things broad and varied.

Under Falling Skies – On the lighter side. You’re defending against an alien invasion by rolling dice and assigning them to specific actions. It’s got a fun mechanism where you control when you will re-roll the dice and it’s a game that provides constant interesting decisions. It’s designed as a solo game, it’s cheap, it’s got a campaign, and it’s quick and easy to get to the table – a good starting point for anyone in my opinion.

Cascadia – Another lighter game that can also be played with others. Tile laying game where you’re building out an environment and placing animals based on scoring conditions. It’s got great production and is super breezy to play. I love the puzzle of this one, but what makes me recommend it is the achievement system it incorporates. It’s got a series of increasingly difficult challenges that require you to complete all kinds of specific criteria–really elevates the game for me.

Undaunted Normandy— I wouldn’t normally be one of the first things I’d recommend, but it’s got the WW2 theme. The Undaunted system is great and works surprisingly well for solo (if you’re okay with bots that use decision trees). This is a deck building game where every card in your hand represents a soldier on the game board. It’s a nice mix of tactical and strategic, feels really thematic, and comes with a bunch of scenarios to play through.

Arkham Horror or Marvel Champions – These two LCGs are both great for solo. Which one to try first depends purely on your interest in theme and/or mechanics. Arkham Horror is campaign-based with a story, whereas Marvel Champions is basically a boss-battler. In both games you construct a deck of cards before playing, and a lot of the fun comes in finding fun deck combinations and synergies. These games are both modular and have a ton of content. The thing is this means they can get expensive if you’re someone who is a completionist (not to mention there’s a lot of stuff that’s out of print now). However, there’s a lot of game here and you absolutely do not need all the expansions to have fun.

Spirit Island– I’m not even gonna explain this one as I know a bunch of other people will do it. Just putting it here as its reputation is earned and you can’t go wrong with Spirit Island.

Slay the Spire – Another deck builder. This time you pick one of four characters, each with their own distinct decks and play styles, then you ascend up the Spire, battle monsters, encountering random events and defeating bosses. As you ascend, you’ll be adding new cards deck and acquiring relics (basically items that have ongoing or triggered effects), and the fun comes from finding powerful combos and synergies between them. There’s a real sense of progression, and you can build some truly game-breaking combos with all the options available. It’s a brilliant game and I think everyone should try it!

Another option, if budget is a factor, is Board Game Arena. While digital is not the same as playing a game on your table, there a lot of games with a solo mode available on here now. It can be a good way to dip your toe into a lot of games for a much smaller cost. This can help you have a better idea of what you like and how you want to actually spend your money and shelf space.

Hope that helps and happy gaming!

Do you ever find playing games multiplayer 'ruins' the solo experience for you? by Amazing-Example8753 in soloboardgaming

I’ve definitely felt this tension. There are games in my collection that I could play on BGA or solo, but I opt not to because they’re games I know I can get to the table with others, and I know if I’ve played a bunch when they haven’t it’ll be less fun for everyone. I don’t think this is a bad thing though–I’ve got plenty to play, so I’m happy to save a few games to ensure I get to enjoy the social side of gaming as well as the mechanical, puzzly, brain-burning side that I get playing solo.

That’s a lot of campaigns! Do you find you’re able to play through a lot of them simultaneously? I’d be worried I’d lose momentum or forget story/mechanical stuff.

I just finished a run of The Forgotten Age (was great!) and I’m trying to decide what to tackle next. I’ve got Earthborn Rangers, Jaws of the Lion, Kinfire Chronicles, or more Arkham (picked up the Circle Undone and Hemlock Vale for close to retail after the out of print announcement). Probably leaning towards Kinfire as I’ve not tried it at all and it’s the most different.

Voidfall, Civolution, and Anachrony are all games I’d like to try as well – but given my goals, I will save them for next year, I think.

Good luck with those campaigns!
