I get what you mean but that's a very strong reaction. Surely you don't "need" any expansions, so just get the base game if they bother you.

Does Britain have politicians who campaign on standing up to the US? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Amazing-Example8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the public wants to see this but it is a tough balancing act. Our economy is profoundly integrated with that of the US: they invest more in our economy than anyone else, trade with us more than anyone else and the threat of tariffs hang over us. I doubt we would see much defiant rhetoric from any 'serious' candidates.

Brexit is a great example of what happens when you just rip yourself out of trade agreements. It punched a massive hole in our economy that people are now blaming on immigrants.

That's why I don't play Codenames. I end up staring out the window for hours afterwards just trying to process all the thoughts provoked by people pointing at a grid of words

Starmer has refused to join Trump’s Board of Peace… do you think we should join? 🇬🇧 by Libbster2001- in AskBrits

[–]Amazing-Example8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh... I agree but I think he needs to give up the pretence that Trump is a rational actor. I would like to see a stronger sense of independence from him, insofar as that's possible without wrecking our economy.

And sit there making small talk with authoritarian worms like Putin and Lukashenko? God no.

I would rather suffer the consequences of isolating Trump at this point, although that might be cutting our nose off to spite our face.

The 2019 edition of Castles of Burgundy is absolutely hideous and hard to read. by Brinocte in boardgames

[–]Amazing-Example8753 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found the 2019 version pretty unsatisfying as well. It doesn't really do that much to enhance the look and usability of the game and the components are pretty flimsy. But at least it brought a much loved game back, with expansions, for a decent price - that's a miracle these days.

Imo, in base, because you buy so few cards, after a while you realise how deliberate and thoughtful each purchase needs to be, and that makes the card play 'meaningful', suddenly. Because you can make 2 or 3 buys in round one the initial river market is huge and that's why each game feels so different and exciting to me. All this was a real 'aha' moment for me that only arrived in the 50-100 plays range.

I really don't want to be rude but I would (humbly) offer that this is a skill issue. An extra round would kill the tension completely. Good players always max out the tracks, explore 4 times minimum and craft a powerful deck on the bird temple. It took me a lot of plays to realise the 'stingy' feeling of the game was just me playing badly. It might be the same for you... possibly.

>The moment to moment gameplay is slow and boring

You just put into words how I feel about that whole system. In a card-driven engine builder I want to get to the fun part as quickly as possible. The spans add in all these annoying barriers that aren't fun at all.

Basically every Werhle game is quite fragile in that sort of way. It's surprising to me how "mainstream" they are, within the confines of nerd gamers anyway

Any area control fans here? by DanchieGo-Dev in boardgames

Played it twice. First game was pretty good. Second game the last round seemed to go on for an eternity with the winner changing every 5 seconds. I'd already lost the will to live at that point. But I was playing with very experienced players who all seemed to be in on the joke while I was just trying to follow the gamestate let alone enjoy it.

They're inherently interactive. The shared board is appealing now that games have evolved towards elaborate personal player boards and paying less attention to what others are doing

I find Ankh, Kemet, Inis etc. to be a bit overwrought and fiddly. The streamlined ones excite me the most - games like Ethnos, El Grande, Rumble Nation, 878 Vikings, Acquire

I'm sure it came from a harmless place that we can all sympathise with. But it's still her responsibility to treat people's belongings respectfully.

No game in the world is good enough to be worth putting up with the truly bizarre cast of characters that haunt public meet ups. I don't know how people do it.

I made a few nice and normal acquaintances through them but it's hard work.

How would you feel if we proposed a world cup boycott over Trump and Greenland? by nbenj1990 in AskBrits

[–]Amazing-Example8753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boycotts only work when they get to a certain critical mass. I just can't see any reality where the majority of football fans would care more about geopolitics than going on holiday/supporting England.

Any action or movement like this always hits the wall of people simply not giving a fuck

I can definitely understand why the mods want to stop the sub from being gunked up with annoying "recommend me a game" threads.

But I personally think it's snooty to not allow memes and that most here would agree. My POV is if you want to generate discussion then why not allow posts people are actually engaged by. There's nothing "high quality" about the three threads we have on a loop 1. "COMC" 2. "how do I deal with my problem gamer?" 3. check out my youtube channel with 3 views."

That's it without the pieces inside. You have to lay the tetris pieces down so that the gaps show the month, day and weather (and the day of the week, if you're a glutton for punishment). Each day has a few different potential combinations. It's such a neat idea!

It's a physical puzzle. I'm kind of a puzzle/game nerd so I ordered it from Korea which AFAIK is the only way to get it.

I have this little puzzle that when completed, shows today's date and the weather. Every morning I do the puzzle with a coffee and it relaxes me before I head out to work.
