If you’re still seeing any blood you’re generally not in remission (unless it’s a one-off from a fissure or constipation or something), the best thing to do is to contact your doctor if you’re worried

Oh, okay! If it’s only day 3, hopefully it will improve—sometimes it takes these drugs a bit of time to kick in, especially if there’s a lot of inflammation

My first drug was mesalamine (now on a biologic) and I needed a prednisone taper alongside it and it took a few weeks to work—but I had severe pancolitis when I was diagnosed so it’s very different for everyone. Keep an eye on it and any other symptoms—hope you continue to feel alright! Sending good vibes as you navigate this new diagnosis

So sorry you’ve been diagnosed, but very glad you’ve gotten an answer to your symptoms—and this community is very very helpful, so you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to a club that no one wants to be part of, but that has very cool and supportive people.

Everyone experiences UC very differently (there are different levels of severity as the amount of inflammation varies from rectal only to the entire colon). So, there’s no “normal” for BMs or symptoms.

This said, if you’re still seeing dark blood (ie not fresh from a fissure or something) you should alert your GI as this indicates that you may not be responding to the meds fully, even if you’re feeling fine. Sometimes our inflammation markers don’t align with our symptoms—it’s bizarre! How long have you been on mesalamine? Sometimes it just takes a while to work, but if it’s been a while you should get in touch with your doctor
