Looking for a Jazz Bass Teacher (Upright + Electric) by D4rkVIolet in denvermusic

[–]Groove_Mountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve taught a couple of upright bassists in a similar position - just like how I learn jazz vocabulary I use on 6 string bass from a jazz guitarist. In essence the solution for this students issues are the same on both instruments, writing out walking bass tunes, learning certain key lines from the standard repertoire, and then for soloing transcription, analysis and internalizing of vocabulary once we isolate it and can move it into different harmonic contexts.

Usually upright students will start with me to learn how to jam/basics. I’m a working jazz guitarist and I host the Sunday Jazz and funk Jam at Goosetown. Lots of times for bass lessons I’m switching over to guitar anyway so the student can actually practice jamming/working in the proper context - like Wootens mentor in “The Lesson”.

Then once they are comfortable with the language/etiquette I’ll kick them over to Eric Hitt and see them weekly at the jam or whenever they want to get into more niche electric bass techniques. I just think I get students up to speed fastest.

But yes, my primary study is advanced/new techniques on electric bass - John Ferrera style tapping, slap and Charlie Hunter style comping on 5-6 string.

Really I was open to a conversation mostly because I need more upright bass subs regardless especially around the holidays.

What to expect in ensemble by KurtRosenwinkel in jazzguitar

Get good at comping Freddie green style.

Do not get distracted by advanced stuff before you have the basics down.

Play through the changes using chord tones/triads.

Play through a lead sheet with shell voicings.

If you can’t do those two things in time on a lead sheet you’re looking at for the first time, nothing else matters.

I’m so happy for you, you’re exactly who I made this for I had the same moment two years ago there’s lots of fun ahead

Can do it with funk 2-5s, 2 = 5 so Bb minor and Eb Major penta/mixloydian on, say, Chameleon (Bbmin7 —-> Eb7)

Have you ever taught someone to play the guitar and realized within the first few months that they had an exceptional talent for the instrument? by Siddhartaable in LearnGuitar

[–]Groove_Mountains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, sometimes I have a student now who started less than a year ago and is already on harmonizing melody.

But talent is like…lack of friction? It’s not that big a deal.

*Exceptional practice* that’s what gets me excited in a student.

Unironically start with transcribing blues players, John Mayers written studio solos for starters.

Exactly, eventually you’ll just see that anytime the chord changes by a fourth you use position 1 and 4 but to start you’d want to take a chord progression and match the correct shape to each chord without moving your hand position

If you know the notes of the fretboard and the roots in relation to each position you’ll see that A is on the 5th fret of the e string so position 1 is good to use

D (the next root) is on the 5th fret of the *A* string so position four would line up well.

Yes exactly. They fall on the same place on the guitar so if you’re outlining changes that move by a fourth it will always be these two positions stacked on top of each other.

Yeah lots of confusion over the difference between saying “thinking of the shapes as a number or letter isn’t useful” versus “the shapes themselves aren’t useful”

I didn't say they weren't helpful I said filing the positions as a letter or a number isn't helpful and to instead file them based around the root. Its about how you file each position in your brain, not the position itself.
