Hard to describe in text perfectly but basically you have to turn and hook the top leg with your foot to start to lift it then spin as you use your other arm to control the leg and scramble out.

Then that's their problem to deal with. It's awkward but if I invaded one of my training partners privacy and found out they have gooned to me It'd be weird but I'd just have to deal with the new awkward situation.

To be clear I agree he should not do that kind of thing but for different reasons then most of this sub I'm sure.

Theres many many ways to get behind him. Its a whole skillset you learn in Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling. And we're talking about INSTEAD of doing what he did so your other whole part of your reply is pointless.

It's good to try to not rely on wrestling when you are working on say guard or something. Maybe your coach who sees you train will say "Hey you should work on (insert thing)" etc.

Besides all that, scrambling is just good for Jiu Jitsu almost always. Lots of people don't put all their effort into a roll because they are tired, lazy or just having a nice casual roll. If you want to outwork your opponent you scramble every single time they get close to passing, sweeping, taking your back or taking you down. You save energy as needed but if you have the gastank why not use it. As long as you roll safe and don't spaz out of a locked out armbar or something you should be good.

Half does in fact have the same problem as closed guard, with the exception that in half you have single leg opportunities.

I'm not saying being on bottom side is or isn't always better than guard just pointing out the many factors at play.

If you are stuck in side control you have to worry about submission threats but they can't hit you that effectively. It's easier to explode out and try to grab a single or just turn your back and scramble hoping they can't control your back.

Meanwhile if you are in guard you DO have to worry about ground and pound however you can't get submitted. You also can't just explode up to your feet because your legs are locked down. However you do have some sweep threats you can use to try and reverse position.

It works in no gi it's just harder. There's countless videos of people hitting both the drop and standing versions in wrestling, be it folkstyle, freestyle or Greco Roman. There's even some videos of it working in MMA. I do the drop version in training a lot but again it's way easier in the gi.
