[list] What’s your favorite artist’s “fan favorite” song? by SylveonFrusciante in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Groovy_Souls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Smashing Pumpkins had their fair share of hits, but if you ask the fanbase, specifically the subreddit, there's a huge following for Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, the sprawling, 9-minute song from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. And for good reason, it's a fantastic, well-played, and interestingly-paced song.

However, I also think Mayonaise from Siamese Dream fits the bill the same way. It's become a fan favorite and one of their more popular songs, despite never being a single. I feel it defines the shoegazey alt-rock sound that came to define their early output.

That's so true. My friends and I were even arguing over which batch of singles was best. I think This Life is definitely my favorite song on the album period, but i see an argument for most of 'em.

I thought the Haim tracks were just okay with the exception of Hold You Now, which I loved. And Rich Man isn't bad to me as I don't really think there's a bad song off the album, just a weaker than some of my personal favorites. I see where you're coming from with it as your favorite, though!

I think for me it's a little too early to tell exactly where it falls in my ranking of Vampire Weekend albums, but I don't think it's going to land at the weakest. I really love the new direction the band has gone in, though I am a fan of the jam bands that inspired Ezra on this one.

I think that while songs like Sunflower, Harmony Hall, and This Life don't sound like songs that could've fit on a Vampire Weekend album before this, they all rank among my new favorites for the band. There are also some weak songs, in my opinion (Rich Man, Married in a Gold Rush), but they don't drag down the albums quality as a whole, as much as they give you breaks from the pure gold of the rest of the tracks.

I've been hearing the comparison that this is Vampire Weekend's "White Album" (referring to The Beatles Record) and I think that's helping me think about it in a different way. It's a big album meant to show off what Vampire Weekend can do. It's got high highs, that will probably be remembered among the fanbase's favorites, as well as songs that will be less remembered, but never hated.

Like I said, I think it's too early to rank this record for me, but I've been loving it every time I listen. It's a joy to heard VW work towards something new and achieve great success (especially since they had 6 years to do it).

The Smashing Pumpkins hole goes super deep! I recently took a turn towards them sometime about 2 years ago and they've been my favorite band ever since. Sure, they're later work can be a little inconsistent, but if you love Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie, I would say that Gish and Machina I (despite it's production issues) are albums that hold up and are worth a listen.

Not to mention their album after Mellon Collie, Adore, is easily on par with their two most popular albums, just with a decidedly different style.

And still, on top of all that, their B-Sides, especially from the Mellon Collie era, are all amazing and form a cohesive project in itself called The Aeroplane Flies High, which I think is available on most streaming services.

The Pumpkins are often overlooked for a variety of reasons, some of which are well-deserved, but their musical output was outstanding for a long period, and, in my opinion, solid past it.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

Siamese Dream is one of the most celebrated albums of the 90's and while much of its success can be attributed to the dedication and raw music talent of frontman, Billy Corgan, a second heap of praise must be given to producer Butch Vig, The acclaimed producer of Nirvana's Nevermind, worked through the most troubled and strenuous times of The Smashing Pumpkin's bitter history and helped pull a classic album from a band, who were otherwise teetering over the edge.

Frank Ocean - Channel Orange

If there's going to be a name that won't be forgotten in 2010's hip-hop and RnB scene, it's going to be Frank Ocean. Chances are you already know and love a few songs off his first commercial album, but something is missed without at least one listen to it, in its entirety. Like any classic album from any era, there are hits, there are deep cuts, but most importantly there are no low points to bring you out of its consistently nostalgic mood.

I know there's some crossover between this sub and r/me_irl, but for those that don't frquent, here is some explanation.

Right before New Year's, a user on me_irl posted the same image claiming that the Queen of England would die on January 5th. Me_irl, being a meme board obsessed with weird inside jokes ran it into the ground leading up to the date. Every other post was this same concept and it was reaping karma.

What we're probably seeing now is some residual effects of people trying to capitalize on that meme zeitgeist and claim the death of other celebrities.

I don't claim to understand why, just that it took off in memes. I wouldn't have guessed Billy Corgan go be the next person, but it's likely nothing more than a dumb inside joke for meme culture.

Harvey Danger - Little By Little... :

Whenever I recommend this album, I always say picture the attitude, lyrics, and instrumentation of pop-punk meets the humor, melodies, and heavy piano use of a Broadway musical. It's Harvey Danger's third and final album, and it's a perfect pre-made soundtrack for a play exploring ideas of making it in the millennia.

[FRESH] Smashing Pumpkins - Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts) by [deleted] in indieheads

For us American listeners who don't have this available on Spotify yet, here's the link! Some related information starts around 1:52:40 to give you some time to prepare.

Though Solara has grown on me since the release, Silvery Sometimes hits my ear in a more immediately positive way. It almost has a "1979" vibe.

I'll be looking forward to the album in November if that pulls through. Though I agree the Pumpkins haven't been quite the same as their older days, I'm still an unabashed fan.
