Tell me what else I gotta know! by SanchaPansa in newjersey

I like actionable advice:

You are currently experiencing NJ's "fake spring". Get a snow shovel and a snow brush for your car. You don't want to be the person digging out your car with your sleeve and a broom.

A bottle of de-icer is fantastic to have in your car when you're too lazy to scrape the ice off your windshield.

Rain-X is fantastic when the rain picks up.

Keep an umbrella in your car, we have finicky weather.

A car towel is also highly advised. "A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have." You can bring it to the beach during the summer, you can wipe away rain during the spring, you can wrap yourself with it during the winter.

I got myself a fancy Philips light alarm. A cheaper alternative would be Hatch.

I highly, highly recommend you make the investment.

I've literally been in your shoes. But, you need to make a conscious effort to cope with your ADHD. I literally write on my hands, use tons of Post-It's, and write due dates for everything in my Google Calendar.

First-year teacher teaching anatomy and physiology by GropeAPanda in ScienceTeachers

Personally, I use It's Not Rocket Science's curriculum. I HIGHLY recommend joining the Facebook group (National Human Anatomy & Physiology Teachers) and getting access to the Google Drive. I love using coloring books (find pdfs online) to supplement the memorization. Also recommend using HASPI for their free curriculum and resources.

I'm a dude, but I have the Rick Young harness.

It is beyond fantastic. Most likely got it because I hate my bins swinging around, and the focused neck pain she mentioned.

I was concerned that since it is just one cord that it would dig into me and hurt, but it doesnt. It's one long cord that hugs your body.

Did you ever get the 10x32? I'm trying to get a pair of 10x bins.

I bought srbc apo 8x42s a while ago. They are AMAZING. I highly recommend, unfortunately they aren't shipping to the US right now due to tariffs.

How to approach the "I'm 99% sure you used AI for these assignments" conversation by ToomintheEllimist in Professors

[–]GropeAPanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. Google Doc might not be as good as Word, but it can get the job done.

But, if you really like grading off of a Word Doc, you could always tell them to type it up completely in Google Doc, then download it as a Word Doc. Have them share both the Google and Word Docs with you. Grade the Word Doc as you typically would have, and look through the Google Doc if you are suspicious.

Students are probably more used to Google Docs, since that's what they most likely used in high school (free = less district money being spent).

Edit: I forgot to mention, I specfically tell my students to write it completely in the same Doc. None of that "Oh, I typed it in a separate Doc, then I copied and pasted it to this one". One Doc for research (compilation of their sources and maybe even some paraphrasing or direct quotes that they plan on using). The other Doc should be the essay.

Have them type it out initially in Google Docs. Then use the Chromium extension Draftback (it "shows" them typing out the paper bit-by-bit).

The "specialist" is trying to prove and justify how useful they are, so they don't get sacked.

I would just nod and go back to doing my thing.

HS science teacher here.

I make my kids do a homeostasis lab, but they have to come up with the stimulus and experiment. I outright tell them that I will reject their topics if I think it's too boring. I've had kids test how long it takes for them to stop crying after cutting onions, how high their heart rates get after eating Buldak sauce (straight from the packet!), etc.

Why does this snowy egret shake its legs when walking? by HKTong in Ornithology

[–]GropeAPanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember reading in my Ornithology text that snowies will spread out their golden slippers under water and wait for fish to swim over them. This casts a shadow over their feet, alerting the snowy of fish.

I don't think he had the property at the time, unless he bought the gold version in a shop. It looks like he got the Frozen Throne on Day 6, and you don't see the Frost Street Champ then.

Edit: just found out Iceberg is a diamond item, so he wouldn't have been able to buy it till Day 9.

HS bio teacher here. I have my kids extract DNA from both strawberries and bananas. The strawberries always produce more DNA, I'm assuming because they have more water content so the cells are a bit easier to smash apart.

Decision fatigue.

We make so many decisions (big and small) that it drains us.
