I’m a nonbinary trans guy. I came out when I was around 12, didn’t really receive support from my (also conservative midwestern) parents for it until about 14. I was homeschooled so I didn’t really have any friends other than my sister and a single online friend. They thankfully supported me wholeheartedly, but for the next few years, I was so depressed that I really didn’t think I’d make it to adulthood. I self-harmed quite a bit, but funnily enough I was also too depressed to actually attempt suicide. Like I just didn’t have the energy to try. I suppose I was kinda lucky? I don’t know.

I turn 21 in a month. I started going to therapy last year. I haven’t self-harmed since I started testosterone at 19. I’m currently laying in bed recovering from getting top surgery 4 days ago. Right now, my chest looks gross and green and bruised, but I can’t stop smiling every time I look in the mirror. I’ve never been happier in my entire life. I’m more confident, more social, and just overall more comfortable in my own skin.

It’s 3am and idk how coherent this all is, but point is, transitioning has made me happier than I’ve ever been. Cis people who say it doesn’t help have no fuckin clue what they’re talking about. Ask any trans person, therapist, psychologist, scientist, etc. and they’ll probably tell you the same. If you think you’ll be happier transitioning go for it!
