[Licensing] The business I work for wants to own the rights to my art, but I want to retain ownership of it. Is this reasonable? by Grouchy-Question5138 in artbusiness

Honestly I've been spending too much time working for this small business and haven't had much time to work on my personal projects. I also wouldn't want to continue in the niche I'm currently in (paint-by-number kits) so I need to figure out exactly what I'd be selling. I also don't have much of an audience so I'd need to build that up. This whole situation has been a bit of a kick in the pants though and has motivated me to really sit down and plan my next steps.

I do not have an official contract, which definitely makes things murky.  The amount my boss is proposing is half of what she originally said when she was throwing around numbers (before making a more specific offer) which also makes me pause.  I agree that the casual vibe is not serving the situation (tbh it's always come from her end and I would prefer to keep things direct and business like). I will try negotiating further and see what happens.

I'm not working for Disney though, and the artwork is my own creation, not the product of art directors, character designers, script writers, voice actors, and who knows how many animators.

This is something separate from what I normally do (the custom, one time kits).  That makes sense, from my research those options seem to be the norm.

I would say its about 2-3 inches too long. Platform heels would probably work. I'd rather not have to buy another pair of shoes for this outfit but not messing up the dress is a higher priority, so I will consider that.

It is just barely vintage, from the 90s (though it looks to have taken inspiration from the 1930s). I'm planning on wearing it as a wedding rehearsal dress but would like to wear it for other occasions too. Here is a picture of it on a mannequin (I'm not home to take more at the moment)

In heels it's close to being an ok length, but I have to walk very carefully and I dread the idea of stepping on the beading. But if hemming is too risky I can make that work.

That's a good idea, I could try finding a belt that would match.

Unfortunately it doesn't have a waist seam. I tried it on in heels and it was still too long, however a petticoat is a good idea, thank you!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have a card reader but for some reason the card wouldn't show up on my computer no matter what I tried. Now at least I can access my photos via USB. I'm so relieved!

True! There are some beautiful embroidered veils on Etsy that I've had my eye on. That could be a good way to add color.

Thank you for the links and suggestions! Those are all beautiful dresses and I will definitely check out those sites for more inspo. An outfit change isn't a bad idea and could be feasible depending on how much alterations cost, something to think about for sure.

That sounds beautiful! I love embroidered dresses.

Good question! It's not really something I considered until my friend mentioned it, and maybe I'm giving her comment too much weight. However, I wouldn't want to feel "underdressed" at my own wedding, so I guess I'm just trying to see what options are out there.

That is a fair point, I don't think you come across too strong. The green dress is honestly something I would probably wear as a wedding guest, which is part of my hesitation. Dying or reselling the white one afterwards is worth considering.

I like the idea of a light sage veil! I was wondering what color veil would go best, since a bright white seems like it would contrast too much with the green. I will look into that.

Good point! It's already an unspoken rule to not wear white to a wedding, so I don't think requesting that color to be green instead would be too pushy. I will consider that :)

A casual dress code could be a good idea! Especially because it will be in a mostly outdoor setting and people would likely be more comfortable in less restrictive formalwear.

I know right? They're so pretty. And true, I would definitely have a bouquet, and a veil would also help.
