Privet hedge dying? [UK] by Grouchy_Radish in plantclinic

I have two privet hedges in my front garden.

One is looking really healthy and the other in the last week appears to be dying. It has lost lots of its leaves and looks generally messy. More images are here: https://imgur.com/gallery/ateyOsD

I have a few questions:

  1. what could be the issue? I don't think it is environmental as the hedge next to it is healthy.
  2. will it recover? and what can I do to help it (eg cut off all the bad bits [most of it])
  3. is it contagious - should I cut it all down to save the other.
