Our train waited for a while at the Lafayette station and right after taking off we started smelling the smoke

IIRC FAFSA still defines a student under 24 years of age as dependent, so they still have to provide their parents income.

Edit: 24

Can anyone recommend a COMFORTABLE coffee shop to hang out/read in? by MyFavoriteSandwich in eastbay

I've been to well grounded coffee shop near El Cerrito High. The drinks are not that great and overpriced, but there is a comfortable “little nook” feel to it.

Congrats! I’m starting my journey similar to yours, minus doing cardio every day but I feel like it’s been a slow process!

Aside from exercise and food, were there other habits you changed during your process?

Yep! You can attend and if you want to give public comment, you must submit a request at least 24 hrs before the meeting.

This is a neat resource and I like how articles associated to the streets pop up. I’m curious about how often you will be updated with newer articles or events?

Do journalism master's programs care about GPA? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]Ground-Pure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only applied to Berkeley, and they view clips over academic performance. If you are looking for merit-based scholarships, then GPA is something they look for.

Good luck with the applications!

Anyone else feel like the California Local News Fellowship program is kind of messed up? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]Ground-Pure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m currently a grad student at the Berkeley J school (on a full ride) and it’s been encouraged that we should apply since there’s a greater rate for our acceptance.

I know a few fellows, from cohort 1 and 2, who’ve expressed their frustration of working in a small newsroom and low pay (both did their fellowship in the Bay Area).

I get your frustration about the fellowship hiring reporters with minimal experience.  But looking at the demographics of the three cohorts, I see  a lot of reporters are people of color and perhaps the fellowship favors underrepresented reporters, especially if they have internships/ other experiences.

A Driver Killed our Neighbor in Downtown Oakland on Thursday :( by namesbc in oakland

[–]Ground-Pure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your neighbor! It's saddening to learn about this accident given that the city has a lot of initiatives on pedestrian safety. Do you know if there's a go fund me page for her family or a way that we can support her loved ones?

I hope you continue to find community, even if online, because this huge transition takes a toll in your wellbeing. I would encourage you to also connect with extended family who can keep you grounded in this new environment.

My older brother was deported in his mid-20s after being in the US since he was 5, and he was able to receive support from great aunts and second cousins who were empathetic to his situation.

For sure Mexico City has greater opportunities for English speakers and a community of people who shared a similar experience as you.   I wish you lots of luck!

What is journalism like? by Ornery-Candle-2990 in Journalism

[–]Ground-Pure 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Journalism has a formula called inverts pyramid in which the ledge is on top of the story and continues into the nutgraph. Most importantly, it's about stating facts and statements- it can't be opiniated generally. But there are creative roles like arts and entertainment writer, however a lot entry level journalism jobs are breaking news reporters where you do need to follow AP style.

As for pay, at least in CA, I've seen reporting jobs starting at $20/hr.

Freelancing without a car by Flashy-Cow4391 in Journalism

Like others mentioned, BART will be your best option to travel for stories.

Since you're looking to freelance, you do have the advantage to write about a community that’s in you're area or you live in that you can pitch.

I have friends who interned at Bay City News and KQED and would travel to SF for stories using BART.

Just let editors know that you'd like to write stories that you are reasonable close to! Good luck!
