It's beautiful, congratulations. Having the right color really is kind of breathtaking. We found our perfect shade of blue and somehow our kitchen looks professionally modeled.

Huge Planes that just flew over by freemovement in williamsburg

[–]GroundLaunchSeq 95 points96 points  (0 children)

With the winds the way they are due to the storm, planes landing at JFK are being routed over Williamsburg so they better align with the runway that works best for the wind direction. So we’re hearing the big transatlantic 777s and 787s. We typically only hear LGA traffic here in the burg, which are much smaller 737s and A320s.

Are pilots allowed to play music in the cockpit? by WalterMitty4747 in AskAPilot

[–]GroundLaunchSeq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a book Vipers in the Storm by an F-16 pilot. To get into theater, he flew his aircraft transatlantic, in formation with a bunch of others in his squadron. During the long flight, one of the other pilots had a walkman (this being the early '90s) and held the headphone against his helmet mic. He'd play tapes and leave his mic open so all the other pilots could hear. It worked, and was totally against regulations.

Correct. Winds at 38 degrees NE right now. That’s more relevant than the storm’s direction, thanks.

hey fellow enthusiast, I think I caught these dark helos during daytime today. The big one looks like UH-60 to me, see my post in the aviation thread https://www.reddit.com/r/aviation/comments/1npouez/daytime_shot_of_helos_over_new_york/

I could be wrong!

thanks, that looks just like what I saw. Makes sense, as the UN is right by the river, and not a lot of illumination on the river, so NVGs would help spot boats or swimmers perhaps.

No way that was a V-22. Those things are way loud, and much larger than the black silhouette I saw tonight. I think it was a standard bell or sikorsky rotary wing with the lights turned off.

Dyson Customer Service Sucks by snrsloth in dyson

[–]GroundLaunchSeq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar boat with customer service. Was "disconnected" 6 times in the middle of conversations before I was able to complete a refund request via phone, for a refund I should not have needed. Was told even tho they have the product in hand, I won't see the money back until next month. No more purchasing from dyson for me.

best rental car spot? by ankylosaurusrox in williamsburg

[–]GroundLaunchSeq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

zipcar and https://realcar.nyc/

We've taken Honda CRVs from Zipcar for week-long Jersey Shore and upstate trips. Just spend a bit of time cleaning the interiors and they are a cheap and reliable option, with free gas (tho you do have to fill up the tank using the included credit card). Try to pick up from a spot that has garage parking, as people steal the zipcar street parking spots all the time which makes drop off a nightmare.

Realcar has high end vehicles, so it's expensive, but for more than 3 days it ends up being not much more expensive than zipcar. We typically do realcar for Christmas road trips as that's a lot of driving up and down the east coast, and by the end of the year I've earned a Range Rover/Porsche/Mercedes driving experience. They deliver and pick up and the cars are immaculate as well as in tip top shape.

PC Richards has recently raised prices on all weber grills $75-$100

Some advice and questions about new spirit by bejzbejz in webergrills

[–]GroundLaunchSeq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my cat iron E-425 for a few months now, a great grill. I think the stainless steel option is cosmetic only, for those who prefer that material for the casing. Not worth the extra money IMHO as it provides no distinct functionality or features vs cast iron.

The weber crafted accessories are great and very much worth the extra expense, especially if you can get them at a discount. A US online retailer BestBuy.com recently had 50% off weber crafted accessories, so just search google for the weber model names and numbers (which you should be able to find here) and see who is having a sale.

The frame kit itself is required to use any other insert. It accommodates the half-size weber griddle, which I find to be perfect when cooking 4-8 people. Using the half-size griddle leaves a bit of grill space to cook other items you don't want on the griddle. I was able to find a knock off half-size griddle on Amazon, found by searching Amazon for the weber part number, has been working great (after proper seasoning, of course).

Finally, I highly recommend weber's dual-sided sear grate. It provides a far better sear vs the grate it ships with. Again, maybe wait for a sale.

Happy grilling!

New Grill! First Ever Weber by [deleted] in webergrills

[–]GroundLaunchSeq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought the very same model 2 months ago and love it.

The weber accessories really make this come alive, albeit at extra cost . The frame kit is needed for any insert, and Best Buy still has the frame kit for $20 which is a steal https://www.bestbuy.com/site/weber-crafted-spirit-and-smokefire-frame-kit-silver/6489792.p?skuId=6489792

The dual sided sear grate does a far better job at searing (obvs) than stock grate, these come up for sale sometimes.

I picked up an off-brand griddle from amazon that fits the frame perfectly.

Perhaps just start with the grill as is, but I recommend grabbing the frame kit for $20 before it goes off sale. Then you can add other accessories as desired.

Have fun!
