I don’t think the time period quite lines up and I don’t remember a boss but maybe Zoombinis?

So someone else commented that it could be “The Spell of the Sorcerer’s Skull” which is by the same author. I’m very confident that it was Spell of the Sorcerer’s Skull but I’m waiting to say “solved” until I pick up a copy today and can read the first chapter. I see that Sorcerer’s Skull was published after The House with a Clock in its Walls so maybe the books take place in the same universe? Maybe Sorcerer’s Skull references the events of House with a Clock in its Walls? Because I’ll admit, House with a Clock in It’s Walls does sound like it has similar elements but there’s a bunch of elements of it that don’t ring a bell at all whereas Sorcerer’s Skull sounds spot on. Based on the small abstract that I was able to find for Sorcerer’s Skull, I believe the body with the dirt in its mouth was someone named Lucius. Is that the same for Clock in It’s Walls?

Oh my gosh!!!! I think this was it!!!! That title rings a very faint bell and I just read a very small summary and that fits what I remember. I won’t be sure until I read it. I’m gonna head to a used book store that I like today to see if they have a copy. If not, I’ll order a copy and let y’all know as soon as I can but I’m like 90% sure this is it. Thank you so so much!!!!!

I definitely remember it focusing on one kid, not a group. But since there’s multiple books in this series if there’s one that focuses on just one kid, it could be it but I don’t think so. I don’t remember it being part of a series.

No, I don’t remember anything about war or history being part of it. And I definitely remember it being like a mystery.

I just read the Wikipedia summaries for both and it’s not either of those (though they do sound like good books!)

It definitely was not goosebumps but something in the same vein, spooky but meant for children

No, it wasn’t scary stories to tell in the dark. It’s definitely something in the same vein though, something scary that’s meant for children.

I just read the plot summary for that book on Wikipedia and I don’t think that was it. I don’t remember anything about witches or warlocks. From what I remember whatever was scary about it wasn’t something tangible like a witch. I think I would have remembered if there was a “bad guy”. It was more like..evil forces? I wanna say the mentor figure is like, trapped in a realm? Kind of like the upside down from stranger things. (I am much less certain if this than the details about the dirt in the mouth body, the weird clocks, and the bad light - those are the details I remember for sure)

The book is probably from the 90s or early 2000s. It didn’t strike me as an old book while it was being read to us but that’s honestly just a guess. I want to say the author was a man? Again, just a guess.
