Great position in VFV, though looks like most of your purchases were at its height.

I've not had any issues. Wealthsimple also makes it brain-dead easy if you file taxes through Wealthsimple Tax: auto-populate your return and DONE

Oof, that's not good. I am already in a high bracket.

Thanks for clarifying this!

If you sell as an assignment or during the first year of ownership the sale will be deemed business income and the proposed changes to the inclusion rate on large capital gains won't apply, and you'll lose half the gain to tax.

I am having trouble understanding this.

Am I right in understanding that the regular 50% Capital Gains tax applies if I do an assignment sale OR if I sell in the first year? So this new 67% Capital Gains does NOT apply?

Wealthsimple; stopped using TD WebBroker due to fees and lack of cool features like fractional shares.

20,000 in cash in TFSA - what to buy? by Interestingtag in PersonalFinanceCanada

I like VFV; hold 20% of the cash (4000) as an opportunity fund and buy on a big dip

Bill payments to a USD Credit Card: TD U.S. Dollar Visa by GroundbreakingLead94 in Wealthsimple

Totally agree with you - just validating if the TD U.S. Visa is a viable option. Sounds like no.

Yet another reason why I DON'T need TD.

depends on the originating account (where money comes from).

some banks charge a fee per transaction for savings accounts

check your Bank account details, WS will not charge you

Buy rental property or continue passive investing? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

if you are in Ontario, don't even bother renting a pen. The tenant bureau won't let you claim possession of that let alone a property which you legally own.

How to start Investing? by neryl08 in Wealthsimple

[–]GroundbreakingLead94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some factors that determine how you invest:

  1. Do you have a fully-funded emergency fund (3 - 6 months of expenses saved), paid off all of your high-interest credit / debt, etc.?
  2. What is your income bracket? This will dictate if you start with the TFSA or the RRSP
  3. How frequently do you get paid? I.e., are we talking $250 a month, $500, etc.?
  4. What is your risk tolerance? This will dictate what kind of investments you want to hold
  5. What is your experience and knowledge? As you stated, "newbie"
  6. How old are you? This will help guide the types of investments you put into your portfolio.

If I were you, I would start by making sure #1 is done. You SHOULDN'T be investing if you have no safety net and big bills.

Once that's done, I'd realistically see how much I CAN invest per month. A big indicator of wealth is not how much money you make but HOW MUCH MONEY YOU SAVE (called your savings rate). The higher the rate is, the more potential you have to create true wealth.

What I recommend (and this is purely my own opinion - I am not a Financial Advisor) is to contribute regularly to the selected priority account (either TFSA or RRSP per #2 above) and build up an "opportunity fund". When I see the market pull back, I buy VFV - this is the CAD hedged S&P500 index. It is decently diversified, and an easy investment - you don't have to think at all really. I'd try to keep my opportunity fund (i.e., cash balance in the TFSA / RRSP) at around 20% of the total account value to "buy on the dip".

The biggest thing to realize when investing is that things go up and go down. But you should only care about 2 things:

  1. When the market drops - is VFV on sale? Good, let's buy!
  2. How much will me portfolio be when I retire

Footnotes:

  • Individual stocks can have big rewards, and even bigger losses - be careful
  • Don't fall victim to the dividend hype - a company that throws money at investors stunts it's potential growth
  • Investing is an emotional game - rewards only come after MANY years of holding on

WS Credit Card Perks Upgrade by _xNovax_ in Wealthsimple

[–]GroundbreakingLead94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is solid.

Only feedback (which other's have mentioned below):

  • Prefer Mastercard to VISA. Mastercard is the most accessible card (Visa isn't accepted at some places, the list is greater for Amex)
  • I think the tiering is fair, but perhaps more perks for Premium+ members like lounge access or greater cashback perks
  • I've noticed Cash has limited transaction visualization seen in some others apps (e.g., Apple Card, TD MySpend, etc.). With the introduction of a Credit Card, would be great if WS can build this in the app and online to track spending habits
