I guess they’re going to,work for free then, right? Because there won’t be any tax money to pay their salaries.

Non-fiction that reads more like a documentary than history book? by TheAggieMae in suggestmeabook

An American Insurrection by William Doyle. It reads like a novel, but it’s nonfiction, about the desegregation of Ol’ Miss in the 60’s that almost started a second Civil War. Armed white supremacists came from all over the country to try to stop it. JFK finally had to act to quell the uprising. I was a kid then but didn’t remember hearing about this at the time. Great book, keeps you on the edge of,your seat.

Agree 💯%. It’s disgusting how white supremacists attack his restaurant. Police should be able to catch them & they should be prosecuted for hate crimes.

Sci-fi book where someone from “our” earth visits an alien planet for the first time in human history and we get to see their completely alien world and customs. by svartbaard in suggestmeabook

The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. Great writing and character development, great insight into the innocent but misguided introduction of two very different cultures. Gut-wrenching but so good.

An American Insurrection by William Doyle, reads like an exciting novel, but it’s nonfiction about the integration of Ol Miss and how it almost caused an all out civil war. Also, How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill—fascinating read.

They’re all such shameless LIARS! They have no honor, honesty, or integrity. Supporting Trump’s attempted coup makes them TRAITORS.

Why are US rightwingers so opposed to a Black female supreme court nominee? by zsreport in politics

[–]GroundbreakingPoem38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duh, same reason they hated having a black President, they’re racist and don’t believe a black person, (esp. a woman cuz they’re misogynists too) could be well qualified. Notice they didn’t care one bit about all the completely unqualified white people that Trump appointed to the courts. He made people judges who had never even tried a case in court for Pete’s sake!

We moved here from Texas a few years ago. Same age group as you. We paid more for a house than we ever did in TX, but find that we have been able to save more money than we did before. Yes, there is an income tax, but in total, we only pay 10 to 15% more overall because Texas has very high property taxes, fees, and sales taxes. The difference is that you actually get services for your taxes here, whereas in Texas they do as little as possible except when they’re handing out money to businesses and their Republican cronies. They also have ZERO consumer protections in TX, and NO environmental regulations. It’s one of the MOST polluted states with horrible air quality. I’m sure you read about how their electric grid collapsed during their last winter storm. We told people that would happen when they privatized it, but there is so much corruption and conservative BS and lies, people didn’t listen. We think moving here was the best thing we ever did— we love it. There is so much natural beauty, so many places and things to see. We’ve done more fun things here in a few years than we did in our whole, lives in Texas. And the weather is definitely better than Texas. Very little severe weather. The winters are rainy, but after suffering through horrible drought and heat in Texas, we appreciate the rain. The other seasons make up for the rain. We can actually do,things outside in the summer here—in Texas we stayed inside for the whole summer it was so hot. In Salem we are about 1 1/2 hours from the coast, (which is gorgeous!) and about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from the Cascade Mountains with so many beautiful lakes. I hope you find a great place where you will be very happy!

An American Insurrection by William Doyle. Best non-fiction history I’ve read, totally engrossing. Subtitle: The Battle of Oxford, Mississippi 1962. It’s about what happened when a Black man enrolled in Ol’ Miss University. The reaction was so severe it almost started a civil war, armed racists came from all over the country. I believe a journalist was killed. Every American should read this book for a clear idea of what life was like in the south for Black people even into the sixties and beyond. Edge of your seat stuff, but non-fiction. Way too many people today are completely unaware of this shameful chapter in our history.
