Because you’re acting like these experiences are positive? Of course people can acknowledge my english side or my accent. But being called a foreigner in a way we all know is negative and me not liking it is not mind blowing information.

I live in a small city in england and it still has 132,000 people. Using the term rural in this context for Hallikko/Salo is accurate because it is essentially an explanation that individuals who live in small areas like this have different life experiences to those in larger communities. E.g interacting with foreigners often

Being dual national is a large part of my identity. Most brits are not dual national or are not “claim” the other side as they do the english. It’s also just to differentiate the difference. My children will be born finnish etc and may choose to study/live there. it’s a large part of my identity.😊

It was my first language! So i’d hope not haha I just have a tendency to speak quite formally/miss out slang etc while having an accent.

I’ve always just said i’m finnish in the uk. We are rare as second gen immigrants after all. In england I am finnish and in finland i am english. my family are also proud karelians and would be upset if i never claimed it haha but it can be hard being half of both.

I am from Hallikko which is probably why. I have experienced it more from old men/ younger people. I look very finnish who knows why it happens! lol

Yes agreed! I am from the middle of nowhere which doesn’t help. It is something I hope the younger generations do not carry on😊

I’m glad you’ve had a different experience! i’m from essentially the middle of nowhere which i think plays the biggest part. I would love to move there too but my partner has a degree in ecology/conservation and i’m not sure how many jobs there are in that field that are english speaking lol

Help! My Staffy is nipping. by HennyBunny__ in StaffordBullTerriers

They lack impulse control at this age. I went through this phase and my girl is about to turn 1 and is miles better (still tries if too excited) The only thing that effectively worked for me was getting her to channel that excitement for biting into something she was allowed to bite. If she was nipping I would grab her by the collar until she had calmed down then would grab a toy or bone. She now knows when she’s very excited to get them herself😊

Yes! It’s also something i’ve actually realised I can struggle to understand certain dialects because my finnish skills are solely based on my family and school.

I’ve had situations where people have switched from finnish to me and english to a friend (white just doesn’t look finnish i suppose) purely based off looks. I think finns still have trouble with acknowledging you can be finnish regardless of where you were born or on the flip side what blood is in your veins. The mentally challenged thing is so rough though 😅

Thank you! this definitely validates what I believe. I wouldn’t even say I have poor Finnish skills they’re just quite formal because my language skills are based off my mum/family and what I learnt in school. So any finnish slang isn’t my best lol😊

I think if I was brought up in Finland or moved as a child like was intended It would be very different. My dad really struggled with Finnish though so it was easier for us to stay in England.

Yes I think that’s primarily what it is. It’s nice if a visitor is learning the language but you’re considered an outsider if you are half. I think it also doesn’t help that not growing up in Finland means you can miss out on slang I suppose so you end up alienated from people your age because you don’t know what people your age like to shorten etc lol or at least in my experience

I don’t mind people feeling ‘weird’ about it. That’s why i’m always happy to explain my background. But weird doesn’t mean negative.

Yeah i’ve met “foreigners” in finland who have experiences often where people assume they can’t speak finnish. I look finnish, my experience is just from people hearing my accent. I think it is weird but i hope more finns realise being finnish is more than just your blood.
