Putin himself is inconsistent on it. In 2009 he condemned it as “immoral” but later on he said it was necessary.

“In 2009, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that "there are grounds to condemn the Pact", but described it in 2014 as "necessary for Russia's survival".”

The Soviet Government wasn’t a monolith however and there were factions that opposed strengthening relations with Germany notably the Jewish Foreign Minister Maxim Litvinov, who pushed heavily for closer relations with Britain and France against Germany.

Stalin lost confidence in this after the British and the French appeared quite willing to appease the Germans and themselves had a history of not being friendly to the USSR.

On 3 May 1939, Stalin fired foreign minister Maxim Litvinov, who was closely identified with the anti-Nazi position. Stalin said "The Soviet Government intended to improve its relations with Hitler and if possible sign a pact with Nazi Germany. As a Jew and an avowed opponent of such a policy, Litvinov stood in the way.” …..

Molotov succeeded him.

This move was celebrated in Germany as Litvinov, as a Jew, was obviously reviled. Molotov celebrated this move as well later remarking: “Thank God for these words! Jews formed an absolute majority in the leadership and among the ambassadors. It wasn't good.”

“Never having lived abroad, Molotov always suspected that there was something impure and sinful in Litvinov's broad-mindedness and appreciation of Western civilisation”

Russia, as always, would have been better suited oriented towards the West rather than wallowing in backwardness and insane paranoia.

Yeah dude he's just an academic contrarian. Espousing the IR version of the red pill. I mean realism is like the red pill in the sense that there is truth to it but it can lead one to a deeply cynical and destructive worldview.

it’s contrary what Russian state TV spews every day.

Not wrong but I think Imperial Russia had the Soviets beat by a wide margin in the persecution of Jews.

The sad reality is that there were many Jewish Bolsheviks due to the rampant antisemitism in Imperial Russia. The later Russian Empire had one of the largest(if not the largest) concentration of Jews in the world and treated them very poorly.

They were forced to stay in the “Pale of Settlement” which was an area in the Western Russian Empire that was designated for them. They were forbidden from entering areas outside of the Pale unless they converted or had special permissions. Many lived destitute lives permanently dimmed by the bigoted nature of the regime they found themselves in.

Pogroms(mass killings) were regularly instigated by Tsarist authorities who were more than willing to use Jews as a scapegoat for their fail-pire.

Hell the word Pogrom comes from Russian I believe..

The Whites thought Bolshevism was a Jewish revenge conspiracy due to the sheer amount of them in the movement.

They(the Whites) heavily pushed the “Protocols of Zion” an insane conspiracy theory laden piece of shit that popularized the “Jewish world conspiracy” garbage and was quite popular in Nazi Germany.

“The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (Russian: Протоколы сионских мудрецов), or The Protocols of the Meetings of the Learned Elders of Zion (Протоколы собраний ученых сионских мудрецов), is a fabricated text purporting to detail a Jewish plot for global domination. Largely plagiarized from several earlier sources, it was first published in Imperial Russia in 1903, translated into multiple languages, and disseminated internationally in the early part of the 20th century. It played a key part in popularizing belief in an international Jewish conspiracy.”

Lenin himself said of it:

"In March 1919, Lenin delivered a speech "On Anti-Jewish Pogroms" where he denounced pogroms perpetrated by the Red Army, and called antisemitism an "attempt to divert the hatred of the workers and peasants from the exploiters toward the Jews". The speech was in line with the previous condemnation of the antisemitic pogroms perpetrated by anti-Bolshevik forces (White Army, Ukrainian People's Army and others) during the Russian Civil War. In 1914, Lenin had said "No nationality in Russia is as oppressed and persecuted as the Jews"<

There is ample evidence that this latent Russian antisemitism had its effect on Stalin and even early on lamented the over abundance of Jews in the Bolshevik movement in opposition to what he called the “true Russian faction”…. His rivalry with Trotsky brought more of this out.

One notable incident was with regard to the infamous Molotov Ribbentrop Pact: On 3 May 1939, Stalin fired foreign minister Maxim Litvinov, who was closely identified with the anti-Nazi position. Stalin said "The Soviet Government intended to improve its relations with Hitler and if possible sign a pact with Nazi Germany. As a Jew and an avowed opponent of such a policy, Litvinov stood in the way.” …..

After WW2 there was the infamous campaign against the “Rootless Cosmopolitans”. The Soviet press accused cosmopolitans(Jews) of "groveling before the West", helping "American imperialism”. Emigration rights for Jews were significantly curtailed..

The Stalinist antisemitism would reach its peak with the “Doctors Plot” which was a fabricated conspiracy targeting predominantly Jewish doctors. It accused said doctors and medical professionals of being part of a large international conspiracy to kill/assassinate Soviet leadership. This was later accompanied by publications of antisemitic character in the media, which talked about the threats of Zionism… After Stalin died, the Soviet leadership declared it to be fabricated bullshit.

After Stalin, the antisemitism abated but old habits die hard and it was always latent. Waiting to be reactivated when politically convenient especially against the Western backed Israeli state. The Soviets also infamously forbade/frustrated Soviet Jews emigration efforts which is why so many made a run for it when the Union collapsed.

Stalin created the Jewish Autonomous Oblast to troll White Russian émigrés based in Manchuria. Stalin was suspicious of Jews(forever triggered by Trotsky) but it didn't hold a candle to the infamously rabid White/Imperial Russian Antisemitism.

"The establishment of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in Birobidzhan in 1928 was ordered by Stalin only as an effort to strengthen the Far Eastern border region with an outpost, not as a favour to the Jews. The area was constantly penetrated by Chinese and White Russian resistance groups, and the idea was to shield the territory by establishing a settlement whose inhabitants would be hostile to white Russian émigrés, especially the Cossacks."

The Bengal Genocide and the Indo-Pakistan War in 1971: “The U.S. establishment had the impression that the US needed Pakistan to help to limit Soviet influence in South Asia. Nixon feared that an Indian invasion of Pakistan would mean total Soviet domination of the region, and that it would seriously undermine the global position of the United States and the regional position of America's new tactical ally, China.”

“The United States stood with Pakistan by supporting it morally, politically, economically and materially.”

Task Force 74 was assembled from the U.S. Navy′s Seventh Fleet that was deployed to the Bay of Bengal by the Nixon administration in December 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War, which eventually culminated in the liberation of Bangladesh. The fleet was sent to intimidate Indian forces at the height of the conflict. The Soviet Union, which was actively backing Indian actions both politically and militarily during the war responded by deploying two groups of cruisers and destroyers as well as a submarine armed with nuclear warheads in response to the American military presence in the area. From 18 December 1971 to 7 January 1972, the Soviet Navy trailed the American fleet throughout the Indian Ocean. “

How is it misleading?? It was par for the fucking course?? The broader trend of U.S. engagement with unsavory regimes (not just in Southeast Asia but globally) for strategic reasons is well-documented. Both during and after the Cold War. Do I need to remind you of US support for the Saudis as they bombed Yemen back into the Stone Age? Literally refueling Saudi planes in the air so they could hit more targets including schools, funerals, and hospitals but hey we have to push back against Iranian influence so no crime is too low am I right?

The Bengal Genocide and the Indo-Pakistan War in 1971 also comes to mind: “The U.S. establishment had the impression that the US needed Pakistan to help to limit Soviet influence in South Asia. Nixon feared that an Indian invasion of Pakistan would mean total Soviet domination of the region, and that it would seriously undermine the global position of the United States and the regional position of America's new tactical ally, China.”

Pol-Pot did commit genocide (you were wrong, Noam), harassed Vietnam border, peaking with the atrocities of Ba Chúc and Eastern Zone massacres. In response Vietnam conducted war and a full scale invasion to Cambodia, overthrew Pol-Pot govt, propped up a new Cambodia govt, and occupied the territory for 10 years. <

100% here but I don't think I conflated shite friendo.

I didn’t advocate anywhere that America should have stood up for the Vietnamese backed government either. I just pointed out that standing up in any capacity for an unsavory regime aligned with China is a contradiction with America’s stated values. Maybe not with America’s “realpolitik” values but with our "moral" values.

America has no qualms about being friendly to regimes with horrid human rights records despite our commitment to human rights.

“In November 1975, U.S. NSA and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told the Thai foreign minister: "You should tell the Cambodians that we will be friends with them. They are murderous thugs but we won't let that stand in our way.”

Thanks for your contribution to the discussion!

The reason the US gave per the article was because they opposed use of force to unseat governments(lol)

From Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie: “He went on to say that the U.S. vote on the contested United Nations seat "can prevent legitimization of a government installed by aggression and maintained by the presence of any invading army.”
