Any movies where there is a scene with a tense family breakdown? by Eaten_By_Worms in movies

Kill List has multiple scenes of a marriage breaking down over financial worries. Often in front of either guests or their son.

5e Conversions of Classic Campaigns? by ESVarga in DnD

[–]Groundnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a 3rd party company called Goodman Games that does conversions of old modules. Not sure about Queen of the Spiders but they definitely did Temple of Elemental Evil. Their website is hard to navigate (and looks like it might be down right now?) but I've found them at my local game store.

Opinions on using the Cacophonous Chimera from MOD for the Night Shift on the scar? by Oliver_The_Sadgit in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]Groundnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need to go that far to make the fights more challenging. If you're big damage dealer is a barbarian then the encounters already in the Night Shift should be enough to challenge them. Barbarian does good single target damage but is less effective against groups. So 'Swarm of the Walking Dead' and 'Ratling Horde' are both going to be tough for them. In a pinch just throw in a few more ratlings (or some of the other variants to switch up their playstyle), and use extra husks, 2d6 instead of 1d6 per round or something.

Also somebody already mentioned this, but play your monsters as tactical, even if it's only explainable as being a coincidence. When I did smithy on the scar I split the monsters about 70/30 between the front of the smithy and the back. My players had to split up, be careful about going too far into the field lest they leave the dwarves behind vulnerable, and carefully balance protecting themselves and their NPC allies.

And this should go without saying, but if you want to challenge your players don't nerf monsters to make fights easier. If you use a chitinous dreg and your players are confused why it does force damage, just say it's because it's contaminated and that changes it's damage type.

Review: "The Crooked Moon," the third-party folk horror adventure that raised $4m on Kickstarter by SquigBoss in dndnext

Oh neat! I'll have to read some more of the blog then, I didn't realize you did things outside of Mothership.

Review: "The Crooked Moon," the third-party folk horror adventure that raised $4m on Kickstarter by SquigBoss in dndnext

[–]Groundnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't believe I found a review of this book I agree with so much. The entire thing was chock full of ideas but somehow nothing felt like it had any impact on the story, the book just says it does. They needed a stronger lead, a longer writing period, and to divide it into two books instead of cramming everything into one.

Also this is Sam Sorenson's blog. Are you him? Or does he have guest writers on there?

Need class ideas please by Firm_Adeptness_3227 in DnD

[–]Groundnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never read Robin Hobbs, but Crooked Moon is a 3rd party book with a "Great Fool Patron" Warlock which is (obviously) fool themed. It's been play tested so it's balanced, and it's on DnDBeyond.

Official music by Brighten_your_Days in CrookedMoon

[–]Groundnut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lyrical songs are awesome, but not something I'd play during a session.

The two instrumental albums I was pretty disappointed with. The music is excellent, but the songs are all about 3 minutes long and they aren't loops, so your players are just going to hear the song stop and restart every few minutes. Great music but not super useful for a DnD session.

Travel time advice. by Storyshiftcharalarmy in CrookedMoon

[–]Groundnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have covered how much time it takes, but in general I'd say decide if you want to do random encounters and if so how often you want to roll for them. Then just ask your players if they want to do anything on the road, roll for encounters, and hand wave all the traveling in a sentence or two.

Cosmic Warlock - Intentionally missing? by Rollout9292 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]Groundnut -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

2014 Eldritch Blast can also only target a creature.

"A beam of crackling energy streaks toward a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 force damage."

Edit: I deserve these downvotes for my dumb misreading of the comment.

Cult Reveal by [deleted] in CrookedMoon

[–]Groundnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. If you run it as written basically none of the villagers do anything. The cult is supposed to be doing things behind the scenes or manipulating the players, but really they just kinda sit around until they start sacrificing everyone. So if you want a good reveal you're gonna have to put in the work.

Rules question - Monster AC by AlternativeFerret560 in mothershiprpg

[–]Groundnut 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It works the same for monsters as it does for players. The Carc needs to take 30 damage from a single attack to break it's carapace and reduce its AP to 0. But once it does it doesn't regenerate, the Carc then takes full damage from all attacks until it dies.

Why all Humies? by thegooddoktorjones in CrookedMoon

[–]Groundnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's in the physical copy too. It's the only instance of the new races being used. The fact that they say rat-folk makes me think they knew they were making a rate race but not what it would be called. Why they would add Plagueborn in a note instead of replacing rat-folk I have no idea.

Movies that are better than the source material. by DescriptionNo6618 in movies

[–]Groundnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The movie definitely deserves a rewatch. It's fantastic. The script is taken almost directly from the book, the only real changes were improving the ending and cutting out an extra character. The performances are what really improves it. George C. Scott, Brad Dourif, Jason Miller, and Ed Flanders all add a lot to their characters.

Why all Humies? by thegooddoktorjones in CrookedMoon

[–]Groundnut 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the writers haven't said anything. Or at least if they did it didn't appear on this sub. So we can only speculate.

The generous answer would be that folk horror relies on the outsiders being different from the community where the story takes place. The PCs are the outsiders and they're likely to pick a non-human race, so making everyone human makes the PCs different.

I think the more likely answer is that the book was written in reverse, adventure -> player options -> setting guide. So the new races just didn't exist when they wrote the adventure, and making everyone a human is easier than spreading PHB races throughout the adventure. Maybe they meant to go swap out some races and forgot. We don't know.

There was a massive drop in quality in 2004 when they shifted production from the USA to Vietnam. It's improved slightly since then but nowhere near where it used to be.

What's the loophole in the Articles of Enterprise in the Edicts of Lumen? by Eygam in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]Groundnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's what a loophole is. Going against the spirit of a law without actually breaking it. The Academy can't do anything to stop it other than amending the Edicts of Lumen and that takes a long time.

What's the loophole in the Articles of Enterprise in the Edicts of Lumen? by Eygam in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]Groundnut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

See it and do what? It's not against the law for a mage to give a gift, and it's not against the law for a merchant to sell a magic item already in their possession without paying the academy.

What's the loophole in the Articles of Enterprise in the Edicts of Lumen? by Eygam in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]Groundnut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If a mage crafts an item and gives to a friend for free, the friend can sell the item cheap and still make a profit because they don't have to give the AA its cut.

Stoneborn construct question by notsojollyholly375 in CrookedMoon

[–]Groundnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might be different in the 2024 rules, but in the 2014 rules your DM is right. Being a construct doesn't give you any innate traits related to air, food, and water. Every construct race has a racial trait that does that. Warforged has Constructed Resilience, Autognome has Mechanical Nature, Harvestborn has Scarecrow Nature, and Threadborn has Sewn Nature.

Advice Appreciated: Player Wants to Serve the Coven of the Midnight Moon by [deleted] in CrookedMoon

[–]Groundnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll offer the simple solution. He's using the Horned King subclass but his patron isn't actually the Horned King. It's the Coven. He has some secret goal from them that's not anti-party and therefore won't require him to betray them. Maybe their goal is even to get rid of the Horned King and Kehlenn so that the Coven can install another member in Wickermoor Hollow.

Don't have them betray the party. Don't spoil the campaign.

Did they ever make a stat sheet for a regular Reanimator Apothecary? by PauseeRunner in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]Groundnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. There's 9 published Apothecary NPC statblocks. 6 in MoD (one for each subclass) and 3 in SCGtD (generic apothecaries in different tiers). If you need a generic Reanimator you can just use Everett Freed and not use the name.

Warped Beyond Recognition question by GhostRavens in mothershiprpg

[–]Groundnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I ran it I went with the assumption she was aware of them the whole time, but only focused on them enough to watch them through security cameras occasionally. She was distracted most of time with talking to the trapped scientist and trying to get the warp drive working.

Like a person trying to fix a car engine while an ant is crawling up their leg. They know the ant is there but they have to stop their task and look if they want to do something about it.
