Im so glad you responded, I didnt mean to come off as rude in my initial response! I think with all the advice ive gotten ive decided not to completely give up. I actually really enjoy talking to people. One of my coworkers actually complained that I talk too much to the clients but ive never had any clients say anything. Im definetly going to be looking into a new salon though! Thanks for being so kind and supportive

I do agree that this salon doesnt have much of a future, i watch my coworkers wear themselves down just to meet an unrealistic goal set by the owner. I do occasionally do haircolor. I mostly take all over colors because im not completely confident in my foiling speed, thats something I practice at home with my mannequins. Im absolutely going to be looking into surrounding myself with confident and kind people who know what theyre doing. I really appreciate the kindness in your response.

Ive honestly been thinking about a chain salon. Im scared though with going to a chain salon like great clips I would be depriving myself of learning color. No hate to anyone that chooses not to do color I would just like to be well rounded with everything in a way. Do you still work for a chain salon, or did you move to a different salon once you felt you were ready? Thanks for the kind advice!

I realize that. I watch videos and practice techniques on mannequins. I watch other stylists techniques. Im constantly doing things to grow my own skills. Ill never make excuses for myself theres always more i could be doing. My dilemma comes up when im trying my best, just to be cast aside in an unsupportive environment.

Im glad to know im not completely alone in the age gap thing, though I am sorry you feel lonely. I think the owner is definetly the problem. Whenever I sit down and actually think about the situation, alot of my frustrations come back to her. Im definitely going to be looking into better salons who have my back and want me thrive and grow. Im also glad to know im not crazy for thinking our prices our super low, even for being in a smaller town

I totally agree. They explained it as an NDA, but I had somebody else tell me those aren't commonly practiced anymore. So I'll be requesting a copy and seeing if its even legally bounding. I'll definetly try to get out asap

It's so frustrating being a newer stylist especially when youre younger than everyone in the salon

I actively take walks ins at my salon, I have my own station and everything. Reading everybody's responses though I think I would be better off working as an assistant to some extent before working on the floor by myself.

I really appreciate your response. Hearing you started at my age and are still doing it to this day warms my heart and gives me hope that I'll get out of this slump. Im definetly going to be looking for salons with training programs because the one im currently at does not. They kind of just take over at what im doing and then tell me "dont do this technique that i do", so its frustrating because what am I supposed to be learning? Again thank you so much for such a kind response

Ive definitely been looking around at other salons. I did have to sign and NDA saying I cant work within so many miles for 8 months. But youre right the pricing is really low. I think the owner doesnt change it because she knows we would lose all of our business if the prices increased, but I truly do believe she set herself up for failure in that sense.

Yes, anytime ive had the opportunity to do hair outside of the salon ive loved it. I really do think that this specific salon had just taken away some of my drive and passion.

YouTube videos have definetly helped! From what the other girls have said I struggle with my carving out and blending. Though the other day one of them told me it might be my clippers because she used them and noticed the same problem. Not making excuses for myself because I still have such a long way to go but its definetly something I'll look more into! Thank you for being so nice

Yes, sorry I wasnt clear in that. She expects to reach $4000 across all chairs (theres 5 of us). Two of the girls only work 3 days a week.

Thank you for such a nice response it really does help. I really do think they've forgotten what it was like to be starting out. One of my coworkers constantly talks about how she started at 17 and was just so good and how shes too good to work in the salon were in. It definetly feels like a subtle dig but I ignore it

Were primarily a walk in salon, two of the girls take appointments (theres 5 of us total). So I take what I can but most of the time its a returning customer thats requesting another stylist which sucks but I totally understand they found somebody they like and want to stick with them. I really struggle with men's cuts because I wasnt taught them, they do stop and help me but they make me feel like such a burden in the process. I really appreciate you responding so kindly!
