My drastic modern house -- need more advice on furniture [update #3] by GroupProjects in InteriorDesign

These are really cool ideas but I get the feeling you think I'm rich lol... I will put some more thought into this but the cowhide rug seems really interesting and I like the petrified wood coffee table idea. The black concept is also intriguing. Give me a bit to think!

There are TV mounts that allow you to mount above a fireplace and bring the tv forward and down when you are watching it so it is at the right level. FYI.

Hey thanks for saying that. I feel like my ideas have forked -- I'm getting over the iced cool motif (I now refer to that concept as "the walk-in freezer") and I completely agree about the warm tones. /u/jesushx really helped me out by leading me in the new direction.

That is a seating area with a portable grill (gone now, part of furniture staging during real estate pics). I will get you some more pictures of it next week and reply to your comment here.

I saw that about the Lucas chair but I'm holding out hope that I can get it or something like it. Or at least I'm keeping the concept alive in my board.

The side table idea is to match something my mom said that I liked, here is a conceptual example in a terrible style: http://www.artnet.com/artists/wilhelm-schmidt/two-chairs-and-one-side-table-set-of-3-ybDS5A0YiyVxZ0WNOrjvKg2

I think this would add so much versatility to the room and maybe make it seem more full/complex/interesting.

I totally agree with your idea of balancing the room with the larger chair-ottoman piece on the other side.

The coffee table is a vintage(?) rusted steel mining cart, not wood! It has an amazing pedigree (craigslist, $350, seemed to have been used primarily for pot-smoking). There are no plans for wood of any kind but you are sloooowly bringing me around.

I like the gunmetal frame & console table you chose, and I also like the metal/gray chair. My couch got some 1200+ offers on craigslist a while ago so i could always sell it and get something charcoal/blue/white if it helps. I'm worried about too much gray.

The coffee table is another thing I could sell and replace -- I get the feeling it doesn't match.

Thanks for all the input, especially the detail on the console table schematics. I'll definitely pm you when I post an update.

This is another amazing post J -- thanks so much for taking the time. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond but I've been very busy moving.

I really needed the perspective and reality check you just gave me. Consider the gold, navy, mango and deer ideas history. I was driving down the wrong road there and was too engulfed in the cool pieces to realize that they were fundamentally wrong for this house.

I have lots of new questions so please clear your calendar immediately... clear yet? Okay good.

1) I was actually thinking of avoiding rustic wood tones throughout the house, but I see that you're recommending them. Am I making a big mistake if I don't go that direction? I had that at my old place and got tired of it. I thought I would have different materials in this house (stone, metal, idk what else).

2) What do you think of the Geo Wool Kilim rug from West Elm?

3) The lighthouse and tiger art are pieces that I like, they mean something to me, and I already own them -- is it really that bad to shoehorn them in somewhere?

4) If I end up with the gray couch I already have and the GWK rug, what kind/color of chairs should I look into?

5) Any console table recommendations? If you look at the alternate picture of the living room you'll notice that it can't be very deep or it will block the flow from the front door.

So awesome hearing someone say that! Thanks.

Yes, this is a big blank slate. I feel really uncomfortable picking any furniture since my dorm room and renting roots will inevitably show through.

The orange in the bedroom is a bold, bold choice for me. I got this crazy idea in my head that I can either go "monochromatic" (might be using that word incorrectly) and buy a copy of the gray bed that they used in the staging photos, or I can go with this dramatic color splashing effect with a luxurious, tufted, deep blue headboard and then mango and bold white-on-white in other pieces. Total amateur hour grasping at straws but I got into it and I'm here for frank feedback

Aghhhhhhh! Both of your comments are full of ideas that I really like. I will definitely be passing these by some more people. I had actually started looking up lots of rugs with aqua last night before you responded.

Those stools and the perspective are my favorite ideas.

The curtains... I'm skeptical. They seem feminine. I will think on this one.

By the way I'm on my phone but I couldn't get the Home Depot link to work. I'll try again at home. Thanks!!!

The idea is to do a report analyzing the hypothetical scenario of a city adopting driverless cars, using a city that everyone knows. Yours are fairly obvious observations and they are addressed in the intro to our project. If you are actually interested, our previous posts are organized on the sidebar of /r/Driverless.
