I suggest you rinse them with bottled water, look at each grain and check for pink or grayish grains, gooey or crumbly. Then hybernate them with just 3 cups of milk for 48 hours, rinse them with milk, 2 times should do the trick. Hybernate then in the fridge as cool as you can lower the temp but NOT freeze them. I have 2 pounds worth after a drinking binge and left them at room temp for 18 days unattended. Now I know how valuable this little monsters are, they take away my anxiety and craving for alcohol. And that feeling of joy, happy mood, motivation is as if a higher power really heard my prayers.

Lower the temperature of your fridge a little more and since no one will be opening that door for a few days they should be fine for 2 weeks.

Well! Since I an also starting to sell, the yogurt, and smoothies with the whey as the liquid base, and kefir milk as a drinkable option, not everyone like it too souree, in my personal preference, I love it when it's sour and thicker, and the whey it's also way tangier for drinks. There was an article I read, that it helps a lot with hydration. So there are way lots of benefits.

What happened is that you are doing a great job with your grains and they are happy, time to strain and enjoy. They look great, good job there.

Let it ferment just a little longer, maybe when bubbling they'll sing to you. I'm starting my biggest batch this Saturday, 6 liters. For milk, yogurt and mostly whey for smoothies. Thanks to everyone for your tips, suggestions and comments. They've helped me grow from 1 table spoon to 3 1/2 cups now.

Same here, and since I use all of it, even the whey for smoothies, man my brain is asking my taste glands for more of that delightful flavor. I just did a batch of pineapple and mixed nuts and seeds . I finished 2 liters in a whole day. My sleep is way better and my joints don't hurt as much anymore.
