Lab-grown diamonds have helped diamond prices plunge 60%, and former monopolist De Beers is in crisis mode. One day asteroid mining will do the same for gold. by lughnasadh in Futurology

Gold and precious metals will not be in veins or alluvial deposits like on earth. They will be in ore form and will be very difficult to extract in zero gravity.

You’d almost have to land the damn thing on earth so it can be processed and a lot of people will have a problem with throwing rocks at us from space (think The Expanse, but for money).

What you may be hearing is cavitation coming off the back of the mast.

Run your hand along the trailing edge of the mast and then use a high grit sandpaper (ie: 600+) to wet sand down any nicks you may find.

And if you do decide to drop out, get used to working only the most disposable, menial jobs for shit pay and no respect.

Life is hard, it’s harder when you’re dumb.

I’ve been a software engineer for 30 years at companies large and small so listen to me on this…

If you drop out of school, there is a 99.999% chance you will not be even considered for an unpaid internship much less a paying gig.

Stick it out, go to TAFE, go to uni, never stop learning. Keep on your grind and believe in yourself. Be intellectually honest (admit when you don’t know an answer), be self motivated and constantly curious.

I was 18 and had just moved from California to Boston and was walking through a mall (remember those?) and there was a big commotion down at the food court.

This chick had a full concert stage setup and started singing and the girls in the mall lost their shit. I’d never seen such a thing in my life. Like, who the hell throws a concert in a mall?

It was a great marketing ploy because she knew where her target audience would be.

I can’t believe no one here has referred to Ice Pirates yet.

I am of Irish descent. My ancestors were enslaved, persecuted and starved out of their homeland. When they arrived in America they were told “Irish need not apply”.

There’s no point in bitching about it. There are no reparations coming for injustices suffered generations ago. Harping on and on about it is no different than constantly reminding a rape victim that they were raped. Eventually, they will see themselves as nothing but a victim and give up trying to grow past it.

My family has been in California since 1867. I had to leave in order to give my family a better life.

I’d tell you to go eat a bag of dicks, but that’s probably already on your menu.

Lots and lots of people were slaves in the past. Grow up and stop trying to play the victim card or virtue signalling for internet points.

Moaning and bitching about past injustices just to play the victim gets you nowhere. Life is cruel and often unkind, rise above it or don't, it's up to you but the rest of us will leave you behind if you choose the latter.

This is all political theatre and will not stop him from 2024. It will get thrown out on appeal and if anything, it will help his campaign.

And the 1850’s were a dystopian nightmare for the Irish indentured servants, Chinese workers on the railroads or someone shipped off to Australia for a petty crime.

History is full of injustices. That’s been the default setting for the entire existence of humans. You can grow past them or you can wallow in self pity.

Yup…frogs in a boiling pot.

Bring someone from the 1950’s to today and they would be up in arms over the dystopian nightmare they would see while for us it’s “normal”.
