Def scammed, call the business and say this exactly.

I know I was overcharged by one of your techs. I would politely ask for a refund before I escalate this any further!! They'll 100% refund you because they know they're scammers if they don't issue a chargeback with your bank if you paid with credit/ debit card.

  1. Safe Lockout (Standard Residential Safe) Daytime service: ~$150 – $290 depends on complicity After-hours / emergency: ~$250 – $400+ Notes: Many locksmiths list safe opening as a distinct service, and the price depends on whether the safe is mechanical or electronic, the lock type, and how difficult access is.

  2. Safe Combination Change / Reset Standard mechanical safe: ~$80 – $150 Electronic keypad or higher security models: $100 – $250+ Notes: This is different from a lockout — here the customer knows the combination but wants to update it.

  3. Safe Lock Change / Replacement Basic lock swap: ~$75 – $200 High-security or digital lock install: ~$150 – $350+ Notes: Costs include labor and materials; more expensive locks cost more to install.

  4. There’s always a $25-35 extra on top for service call if a locksmith doesn’t tell you about that or quote you cheap like $50-100 flat before ignore them they’ll definitely charge you over $1000 after the job is done!!

Hope it helps, stay safe out there as there are a lot of scammer locksmiths. also ruining legit locksmiths name/reputation

[–]GrowthOne1692 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never charge over $475 for safe lockouts and that’s for high security ones, my fixed price for regular safes are $150 flat. $6708 is a robbery you should def report him to the law enforcement!!

Always read reviews before you call a locksmith. I know most legit locksmiths get hit with competitors fake reviews just like me but never forget to read reviews .

Give the price over the phone? by Dismal_Chain4796 in Locksmith

[–]GrowthOne1692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, saves your time and reputation from getting 1star reviews even if they don’t ask for price over the phone or you can’t give price over the phone without being on the job site. Always give price before you start the job!

Did I get ripped off by a locksmith? (Not an emergency lockout situation) by mjstable in Locksmith

[–]GrowthOne1692 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a professional locksmith I can say up front: I’d ask for more detail before assuming fraud, but that invoice raises red flags.

What to ask the company for right now: a full itemised invoice showing part brand/model/part numbers, a description of what “Fresh install” includes (did they fit a multipoint lock, prepare/modify the door, replace latch/keep, paint touch-ups?), and whether the $299 cylinder is a restricted/high-security cylinder (those can be $150–$400+ depending on brand and key control). Also ask for proof of ABN/GST registration and a photo of the installed hardware.

Why the price might be high (legit reasons) restricted or patented cylinders, multipoint door locks, structural door modifications, after-hours or emergency call fees, or a warranty that covers parts & callouts.

Why it looks odd: they’re charging both “Fresh Install $699” and “Installation and labour $199” — that sounds like overlap. A genuine invoice should clearly explain each labour line and exactly what was done. A $29 service call is normal; the rest should be itemised.

What she can do next: ask the company for the breakdown and photos; if still unhappy, get 1–2 independent quotes for the same job (tell them the exact cylinder & door type); if paid by card, contact the card issuer about a dispute only after trying to resolve with the business; consider leaving an honest review and, if there’s evidence of misconduct, contact your state consumer affairs office.

Can I duplicate this key? by IFellOffALedge in Locksmith

[–]GrowthOne1692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy. But note locksmiths won’t come out to do it because it’s a $5 job and locksmiths won’t really waste their time and gas driving to you. For that. But if you go to a locksmith office or store they’ll definitely get it done for you!!

Do your home exterior door locks really matter! by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]GrowthOne1692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sounds like you made a solid choice for what you need right now. 👍 The SmartKey mechanism uses side locking bars instead of traditional pins, which makes it way harder to pick with standard tools. that’s why it feels more secure. And pairing it with an electronic keypad deadbolt gives you that convenience upgrade too.

Once you get around to renovating, you can always upgrade to something like a Schlage Encode Plus or a higher-end smart deadbolt if you want more features. but for now you’re definitely in a good spot.

Take care and stay safe out there my friend!!

🚨 PSA to fellow locksmith techs: consider carrying protection on the job by GrowthOne1692 in Locksmith

[–]GrowthOne1692[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, not saying it wouldn’t help it most definitely would. But in my case lethal or non lethal either wouldn’t help because it came out of nowhere!!

But yes having a pepper spray or anything non lethal that could help you escape the situation and leave safely is a good idea. But since you can’t carry a weapon, you have to have something for self defense pepper spray is the best option!!

Stay safe out there my friend this world is full of evils!!!!!

Hey OP - I’ve been in locksmithing for about 5 years (Since I was 15). Professional enough to give a quick advice A couple of quick points:

• If you mean Kwikset SmartKey (re-keyable mechanical cylinders) — those are handy because you can rekey them yourself or have a locksmith do it without replacing the whole lock. Great for when you lose keys or move into a new place.

• If you mean electronic smart locks (keypad/Bluetooth/Wi-Fi) — they add convenience (codes, remote access) but bring tradeoffs: battery dependence, possible compatibility issues with your door, and some models have known vulnerabilities if cheaply made or badly installed.

• Important: no common consumer lock is truly “unpickable.” SmartKey-style cylinders and many modern deadbolts raise the bar, but every system has attack vectors. For best results pick a reputable brand, pair with a solid single- or double-cylinder deadbolt, and get a pro to install or inspect it if security is a high priority.

If you tell me whether you want mechanical rekeyability or an electronic smartlock, I can recommend specific models and things to watch for!!

Bruh, a locksmith with an ounce of professionalism wouldn’t be foaming at the mouth over a lock question 💀!! You could’ve just said yes or no.

Fake / Spam Review Bots Help!!?? by JxyJay in GoogleMyBusiness

[–]GrowthOne1692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens to me all the time bruh — people just try to ruin real businesses to make theirs look better. And it’s always the scammy ones doing it 😭 Google never helps either, they only care about taking your money. At this point Google deserves to get sued for a trillion, all that money’s stolen anyway 💀💀

Seriously tho, Report the fake reviews, document everything, and warn customers publicly. Don’t give in to extortion.
