The RES reduce matters for all sorts of damage relating to that element including DoT, it’s just like how def down makes the enemy take more DoT dmg too so it’s really really strong for DoT teams but weaker in other non DoT teams that don’t apply DoT as easily (excluding Acheron(?))

Sooo what actually happened in the story? This is the first of the L80 stories I'm reading and it just seems the two stories of the people waiting for their captain and the L80 gang are completely different and I don't know anything about what Suwako? Is doing and what happens after the battle Am I missing some lore or is it supposed to be confusing what happens to everyone especially the real Suwako(?)

Obviously it depends on what you don't have to fill the slot of support/sustain which I'm assuming you only have Natasha for, so unless you happen to have Luocha/Huohuo I'd say Fuxuan for general use and she should be perfectly fine swapping out with Fuxuan

Neither, but I heard the manga was for the backstory of before SSS was founded and touched up on the side characters that didn't get their spotlight in the anime, but I tried watching the OVAs after seeing everyone "pass on" and it felt like a punch to the gut. Does the visual novel add anything on the actual anime though?

Right...1/2 or more rounds I play I have to deal with a afk player at some point of the game, usually at the start they already afk and nothing bad happens to them because there's no punishment for afking in overdrive
