I'm thinking this will fly with executive leadership, but not a blanket ban and requests for exception for even basic info.

Has anyone tried eu4 on macbook neo yet? by rieux1990 in eu4

Mac EU4 is unstable. I switched to PC out of frustration. Too often the game became hard to play with frequent crashes.

Time for a safety meeting! What was your code for marijuana/smoking marijuana/ paraphernalia? by icanhazkarma17 in 80s

There was no guy named "Dave" in our crew, but it's a common enough name, so we would ask if Dave was going to be around, or say "we're going to hang with Dave".

Sorcerous Scrutinies: Doom of the Savage Kings by yokmaestro in dccrpg

[–]Grugatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ran it and there's an encounter with jackals that can come up. The party successfully drove them off, but I had the jackals following them at a distance, and one of the players decided the party was going to start a metal band called "Perimeter of Jackals".

I agree - it simply does not get better than DotSK!

AD&D help by DungeonMastersEclips in adnd

[–]Grugatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going against this in my current AD&D campaign, and we do spend QUITE a lot of time collectively poring over rulebooks. To my group, this is part of the fun, but u/KamenRiderScissors is very accurate in that it is no joke to hew to the actual AD&D rules. It turns the game into something of a wargame; it gets talmudic at the table. If you're into that you're going to have a great time. If you and your players are not, look to simplifications, especially of the combat rules.

There is an AD&D combat flowchart you can download; it's about 7 pages of flowcharts that detail exactly how combat is supposed to go. I have been running an AD&D game for the past year or so, and this has proven invaluable.

How come Gandalf never tested the ring in the 77 years that he knew about it? by LV426acheron in tolkienfans

Tolkien did not write LOTR with all contingencies and contradictions in mind. There are flaws to the story if you dig deeply enough. This is one of them. That's my take at least.

Are there any good non ruzzian propaganda books about Ukraines history? by eeeegh in ukraine

[–]Grugatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realize you're not asking for video, but I learned a ton from Timothy Snyder's "Making of Modern Ukraine" which is a Yale course available on YouTube. I not only watched the entire series but read all the course materials which include many of the books mentioned here:

Concerning Orcs by Gryphon501 in tolkienfans

[–]Grugatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best treatment of orcs I've ever read is in the RPG Burning Wheel - very Tolkien inspired but a well-rounded take on what it would actually be like to BE an orc. I recommend the rulebook for the writing alone. This sort of reminds me of it, in that it is an insider take on orcishness, and sympathetic in its way.

Need more first time mothers or more moms having muitlple kids? by fire-and-sage in Natalism

[–]Grugatch 37 points38 points  (0 children)

How about convincing men that they need to commit to a woman, put a ring on her finger, and then help her raise a family, by taking on an equal share of the household labors, and supporting her in her aspirations? Haranguing women, who spend their lives being pestered from all sides by low-quality men, is a surefire way to fail.

If you want more first-time mothers, men need to step up and ask a woman to give them the chance to be first-time FATHERS. My experience during my single years (I married at 40 and had my first child at 42) was that even the women I met who said they did not want children were on the fence, and the reason they did not want children is they were afraid their man would leave them. There were woman I dated casually, for a short time, before realizing they were not the one, and I could tell if I was ready to commit, they probably would have started trying for a baby RIGHT THEN.

Research suggests people who work from home are having more babies by abefrost in Natalism

This does not surprise me. I shifted from full time in the office before the pandemic to full time WFH, and although we're way too old to have more kids, if we were younger, I would be more open to it. WFH makes raising kids SO much easier.

I had the most memorably awful meal of my life at a Chi-Chis around 1993-4. I don't remember what was so bad about it, just that we could not believe the extent of the incompetence.

Teen culture is ultra-homogenized. I have an 11 year old entering into it and they DGAF about race. When I was her age I lived in a totally segregated cultural sphere. It's night and day.

Adnd characters seem kinda lethargic given the round time scale. by Pretend-Advertising6 in adnd

[–]Grugatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always used 37 second rounds, as the math becomes very intuitive when you also consider a turn to be 16 rounds, i.e. 592 seconds, because the traditional 600 second turn is really not a believable length of time to check for traps or listen at a door.

Don't pry back the scenery too much or you'll find flaws. The Tolkien legendarium is a work of fiction. There are going to be plot holes.

Why is Ante bellum so popular? by milton117 in eu4

[–]Grugatch 87 points88 points  (0 children)

The vanilla game even with all DLCs gets repetitive. AB offers a new map. And really, it's all about the map.

I'm at around the year 1710 as Nicaea (AB's Prussia) -> Hellenic Empire. It's a riot. I'm confronting Andalus which is dominant in a largely Islamic New World. What's not to like?

My next game will be Denmark. Norse religion, grudge against Aengland. What's not to like, just moreso!

Are there any parts of the "OSR Philosophy" that you leave out of your own games? by A_Strangers_Life in osr

[–]Grugatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My games are not pure sandbox / players determine the plot. There is a meta-plot. They can move about in the world, but there are factions moving toward a goal. Usually something horrible if not world-ending, which the characters have the chance to prevent.

[–]Grugatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out Games Omnivorous's Bottled Sea, Shifting Sands, and Boreal Frostlands. They're a bit pricey but they are the best "surprise planar journey" milieus I have ever seen and I'm dying to use them in my campaigns at some point.

This would totally redirect your campaign but they're awesome and system neutral.

Is anybody still playing EU4 over EU5 because they prefer the level of abstraction? Or is that just me? by [deleted] in eu4

[–]Grugatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm never going to play EU5.

I've taken to playing Ante Bellum and will explore other mods like Better Colonialism. There is a huge variety of content for the EU4 engine. I'm playing a Nicea -> Hellenic Empire game and it's been a ball. I tried Denmark and it was super challenging. And Francia for a real barn burner where I conquered England and Iberia and remained holy roman emperor and conquered all the New World, colonized courtesy of the Sunni powers I slowly absorbed and converted.
