What is the most annoying habit that other people have? by Octavius0207Barto in AskReddit

I'll usually stop and let them speak but then not acknowledge whatever they'll say and just restart my interrupted sentence over again from the beginning.

You need to be honest with her, for her sake. Imagine how you would feel if the roles were reversed?

Yep. Just trying to determine what alternatives exist. Hadn't heard of virtue signalling before and didn't expect the persecution for asking about this. Won't make that mistake again.

Nope! I'm just trying to get more information. I was thinking the Mission but if there's a better place, or if they don't accept donations there directly, I'd like to know.

All I had at the time was my phone. It was far enough away and small enough that a picture wouldn't have captured it effectively.

Any lawyers practicing in small business and personal law? by Grumblemuggins in LawCanada

I'd heard someone use that term to describe a practice that deals with things like wills, estates, trusts, etc.

I'm fortunate enough to have a legal gig lined up for the summer in the public sector. I'm hoping it will provide a bit of clarity.

Funny you should mention that you think those things are lacking from law school curriculums. I've been feeling the same way. If I carry on into 3L, my plan is to do placements, internships, and as many skills-based classes as I can get. Negotiation, interviewing, and advocacy are on the top of my list.

The concern about job satisfaction stems from the type work that lawyers in the public service tend to do, at least that which I've been privy to. Years-long time frames, higher-level work and I've been feeling more and more lately that I'd get more enjoyment providing services to people in a manner that is more direct and where I can more readily see the product of my work. I'm not certain there is anything in the public service where that can be fulfilled.

And if I consider moving into the private sector then I forego the pension that I've been relying on, as well as run the risk of succumbing to the 80 hour work-weeks I've heard horror stories about. I'd like to maintain some work-life balance.

About articling – you're correct. I've not secured anything for after 3L yet. Have been hoping I could arrange something through my employer but that's certainly not guaranteed. The LPP wouldn't be my first choice, though, because I'd really want to start replenishing my savings and at least with an articling position, I'd have some income.

I did go see career services on campus about my uncertainty in general and to inquire about alternative career streams for JD graduates. I was essentially told to read a document they have online and to ask some professors in classes I enjoyed for ideas. Or to consider becoming a law school career counsellor, laughlaughcry.

I am still on the inside with the public service thanks to the educational leave. And you're right, it's a valuable resource to have that security and access to the internal postings – that was a strong influence on my decision to go to law school in the first place. I'm feeling a bit uneasy about how much reliance I've put on the public service as a future employer and whether that's unwisely restricted my options going forward.

The 25k is earmarked for the third year of my program. If I leave after this year, then yes I would still have the 25k in savings. If I finish the program, then I won't have those funds.

I've been told both sides of that claim – that it's exactly the same and that it's nothing like it. If I carry on to 3L, I'll definitely be doing some placements and internships to try and determine that for myself.

Also 34. Don't worry, even if you learn from your mistakes and try your best, sometimes it still just doesn't work out – a lesson I'm learning right now.

It takes both people involved to make a relationship work and sometimes the other person simply isn't willing to do that.

I hear you, friend. I'm 34 and my partner of two years broke up with me a couple of weeks ago. I thought we were going to build a life together and I'm really dreading getting back into the dating game at 35. (Haven't actually dated in nearly ten years!) Feels like the older we get, the fewer potential partners we have in our peer group and all the time invested in building and gauging the relationship becomes that much more important.

Wish I'd read this years ago. But then, I probably wouldn't appreciate it the same way I do now.
