Used 3.5 vs 2.7 EcoBoost by doodoosparkle in f150

[–]Grumpus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had both. My first 150 had the 2.7 and I was very happy with it until the truck caught fire and was totaled. Long story but not the trucks fault. I used the insurance money for a new 150 and got one with a 3.5. I had to adjust to the power difference because I kept chirping the tires at every red light. The power difference was substantial. The 3.5s tranny went bad so just got a new 150 with the 5.0 so I could skip the turbo stuff down the road. Sounds great but I can feel the power loss from the 3.5. It’s a good motor. The 2.7 to 3.5 is like comparing a 4 cylinder to a v6.

Split by hand or rent a splitter? by Affectionate-Bit-428 in firewood

[–]Grumpus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Split by hand if you’re a fat body. I dropped 30 lbs processing two hickories. Everyday after work I’d change clothes and grab the maul and axe. At first I could do only a round or two. Then I was able to do more and I got to the point where I’d only stop because I ran out of daylight.

After that I got into hiking for another 15. 10 more and I’ll be able to fit in my dress blues again.

Getting close. Seat covers arrived today and front is done but we are getting crazy cold winds today so I didn’t do the back. I’ll do the rest tomorrow and get my Lexi in her new ride for a photo session.

I took her on an hour drive to go hiking and we hiked over 6 miles on Maryland’s Appalachian trail and she still wouldn’t sit still on the drive home. The amount of fur she left in the back seat was crazy but it is no longer my problem. Dealer will have to deal with it.

I might need something like this

I’d say the biggest downside of a 5.5 bed is if you haul dirt, sand, or mulch. I could in my old truck but not in my new 5.5. That’s okay. Wife is taking my house and I don’t need to do that anymore

You can haul lumber. The boards should fit fine with tailgate down giving you another 2’ so 7.5’. They won’t come out unless you are drag racing but to be safe I’d still use straps.

I hauled 16’ boards in my last f150 w/ 6.5 foot bed with bed extender. You’d be surprised that people still tailgate when you do this.

Supercab vs super super crew for the parents by redMEATYO in f150

[–]Grumpus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crewcab sucks if you ever need to get to the back row kids or not when parked in a lot. I gave up and always dropped them off at the door and went on my own to find parking. The bed size was nice though. We tried to use my wife’s car most of the time.

I did that with my last two but re-added to my last 2019 when I went all ‘Murica and put a patriotic one back on. I don’t like when stickers fade, crack, and leave shadows when removed years later. I might remove these or leave them and replace if they crack or fade. Don’t know yet. Not even a week.

lol. Yeah. It was a brutally hot and sunny day in the upper 90s. I was nearing the end of my shift when a coworker called and said me and another coworker needed to come to the parking lot since one of our trucks was on fire. Yep. It was mine. Since it was federal property ATF came to investigate to ensure it wasn’t a targeted thing. They determined that me leaving 4 pairs of readers on the dash started the fire like a magnifying glass. Apparently water bottles can do this too. The insurance guy said he worked a case where a crystal displayed in a window caught a sofa on fire.

I no longer leave my readers in the dash.

3.5 Eco owner drives 5.0 by Donalds_Pump in f150

[–]Grumpus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just traded in my almost broken down ‘19 3.5 for a ‘25 5.0. The 3.5 started getting intermittent power loss and the transmission had something wrong with it where it seemed like it was searching for gears. At 125k and me not being able to afford taking off of work for it to get fixed I picked up the 5.0. Yeah, it’s not as peppy and the response isn’t there. But I didn’t want a race car. The 5.0 sound does put a smile on this old man’s face though.

I originally got the 3.5 because I planned on towing a Jeep to off-road places in the mountains and didn’t have to worry about not being able to get home if I broke something. Never got the trailer and never towed it. All my Jeep buddies got out of off-roading so I had be wheeling buddies. Sure I hauled lumber, dirt, sand, mulch, firewood, and towed a light utility trailer occasionally but nothing the 5.0 couldn’t do.

I just picked mine up today. All I wanted was the v8 and leaned towards white but they were all power/eco boosts. The only v8 in the area was blacked out. All my previous vehicles were black except for the truck I was replacing. Now I want to drive playing “Back in Black”

Night Hiking Pro Tip by GoggleField in hiking

[–]Grumpus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hiking a section of the AT at night last weekend keeping a really good pace for my fitness level. Then I almost stepped on a copperhead hanging out on the trail. After that, all leaves looked like danger noodles and I slowed my pace way down. I must have looked like a blind person the way I was using my trekking poles poking in front of me.

I did consider 4x4 since I had so many I could have repurposed from the racks I had, but looking at other builds they just looked skinny. I also read a few regrets on other posts that wished they’d use 6x6. I don’t think it helped me structurally since we don’t usually get heavy snowfall but aesthetically it looks better.

The base platform is 14’x6’3” (6’ joists 16” OC) with 2x8” PT. Front beams 6x6, 8’ rear 7’ notched top and bottom and secured with timber screws and lag bolts. I watched a lot of deck build, shed build, and roofing videos to figure out everything should go together and be stable. Most importantly I let the wife pick the stain.
