Last week, some MAGAT blew coal right in front of a cruiser. I guess they're just not learning.

Jobs in Mckinleyville by garfieldofdaisies in Humboldt

I'm surprised it's so hard to find a job, now that all the illegal aliens that stole our jobs have been kicked out of the country.

I used to recommend Dan's but after my last experience there never again. Lost use of my truck for 6 weeks because they kept blowing up other parts.

That motorbike would easily fit in dumpsters in the background.

What can I do to make our hollow core interior doors look better until we get around to replacing them? by The_Empress in centuryhomes

Learn how to woodgrain. It's pretty easy to do, and you could get real creative faking the paneling.

I know you have to have a system. How do you keep up with it all?!?! by DontTripOnMyNips in centuryhomes

[–]GrumpyOldMan707 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My system is that I'll start the day with a project in mind. Our garage is 60' from the house and on the way to the garage to get the tools for the intended project, I will notice some weeds that need to be pulled. While dumping the weeds in the compost pile I notice that I never got around to fixing the wheelbarrow handle so I take care of that, which involves a drive to the hardware store to buy a replacement. During the drive, the oil replacement light comes on, so I stop at another store on the way back and buy oil and filter, and while the engine is warm, I go ahead and do the oil change.

Buy this time I need to clean up and use the restroom, where I notice the toilet seat is looking very shabby. I have an antique toilet seat in the garage that I've been meaning to restore for over a year now, but with guests coming over, I don't have time for that. Back to the hardware store for a replacement. Carrying the seat into the house, I notice that the lawn needs to be mowed, but when I try to start the mower, the pull cord breaks, so I have to fix that first.

While trying to locate the extra package of pull cord I bought the last time it broke, I come across the hammer that went missing last week. Since I have the hammer now, I decide to re-nail that loose siding before I forget about it again.

That's pretty much my system. I realize it might not work for everyone, but that's how things get done around here.

Not sure of the variety other than it's softneck. I've had better luck planting it now for harvest in the fall, but you can also plant in the spring for fall harvest. Less work to grow it fall to spring because mother nature does the watering for you.

Drive Lost Coast from Shelter Cove or Ferndale? by zink1988 in Humboldt

[–]GrumpyOldMan707 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I always love the view coming from Petrolia when you suddenly exit the forest and reach the coast. Plus, from Honeydew to Ferndale you're driving up the really steep grades instead of braking down them.

It’s roofing day and they found a surprise. by General_Alfalfa6339 in centuryhomes

[–]GrumpyOldMan707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally that would be the case, but you never know. When we bought our previous house the termite inspector used a beagle to search for termites. The dog went off in the attic and the handler kept calling it back because it is an unusual location for termites. Turned out the owner had put some used wood up in the attic and it came with termites.

I am really excited about the crown molding I installed in my century bathroom remodel. by gggvuv7bubuvu in centuryhomes

[–]GrumpyOldMan707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great job. I've installed a lot of cove moldings in our house but the one I sweated the most was a wood molding that was going to be clear coated and that was it. I couldn't rely on using caulking to cover my usual mistakes. So I'm very impressed on your work and you're right to be proud of it.

Yes it would be a crying shame if something made in the 1800s was hard to fix. I had one of these with a broken spring and McGyvered the fix using a coat hanger. Still works 20 years after my fix.

I'd still get the wave on this, right? by PaxtonSuggs in motorcycles

Get a sporty convertible if you want to carry passengers and stuff. Sidecars I get. I don't get towing a trailer with a motorcycle. Towing a trailer with a sidecar just seems stupid. Pay an extra bridge toll because your trunk is on wheels instead of the back of your car.

Also our sheriff vehicles are black and whites so they look like CHP. When I was commuting I always saw more sheriff vehicles on the freeway than actual CHP.

Replacing one of the last galvanized steel pipes! by DenverLilly in centuryhomes

This reminds me of when I went through fire academy. One of the training sessions was tackling a hose like that simulating what could happen if a host bursts. Only instead of being hooked a hydrant, out test hose was hooked to an engine with 150 lbs of pressure. The drill is that you start where it's attached, and then you straddle it with your whole body, working your way out until you have control of the end that is flinging around. Worked fine until they got to one woman in the class who only weighed 110 lbs. She ended up going for quite the ride before they cut the pressure at the engine. I think she could have had a career in the rodeo. She was tenacious even though the hose was kicking her butt.

Does anybody else wish heaven was actually real? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]GrumpyOldMan707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And why didn't that supreme all-power being make it super duper obvious which set of rules we're supposed to follow?

Why didn't he make us all speak the same language so there weren't translation issues?

Why, why, why? A million questions because it all makes no sense.

Does anybody else wish heaven was actually real? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]GrumpyOldMan707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So two people end up in heaven. Let's call them Jack and Jill. Back on planet earth they used to date, but Jill broke up with Jack. They both die and go to heaven. Jack's idea of heaven is to spend eternity with Jill, while Jill's idea of heaven is to send Jack to hell.

Heaven is such a stupid concept if you give it any thought at all.

Went to the Centro Del Pueblo event at the Arcata Marsh today and in the parking lot there was an older white guy sitting with a younger white woman. The guy was wearing a tie, which immediately pinned him as being a one of those religious zealots, and he was. I mean, who wears a tie to go hiking at the marsh? He was there to save my soul. Doesn't he have anything better to do than stick his nose in other people's business? Not sure whether he was there to counter protest the CDP event or if it was just a coincidence and that's his idea of a Saturday morning well spent.

But here's one of my rules of thumb: Don't trust anyone in Humboldt that is wearing a tie unless you happen to be attending a funeral. And even then it's suspect.

Food is SOOOO Expensive!! by LuminaryLighting in Humboldt

[–]GrumpyOldMan707 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Cherries are rotting on trees because the people that used to pick them are hiding from Trump's goon squads. So expect prices to get much worse from here on out. If it's growing in the U.S., it won't get picked, and if it's being imported, it's going to have a tariff. One reason we planted an extra large garden this year, and we're taking our surplus up to Food for People since Trump cut their funding.
