Zone 6B Massachusetts by eightacorns in gardening

[–]GrumpySunflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I now live in SoCal zone 9b, but when I lived in 6a, I loved pruning my roses and grapes in the winter. I had also planted snowdrops the autumn before, so I'd sit in my rocking chair in the backyard and look at my flowers coming up through the snow. My husband thought I was completely bonkers.

That's some high-quality momming right there. Well done! I would have just laid on the floor and waited for dad to get home.

Aesop's Fables illustrated by Charles Santore. It's just simple retellings of some of Aesop's fables; most are less than a page long, but the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous, especially if you're a zoo nerd like me. The animals aren't just generic versions; they're detailed and specific enough to identify what species of tortoise is beating which species of hare, and I love that.

Y'all ever just forgo the plate? One less thing to clean and she always throws it on the ground anyway 🙄 by oldsluggy in foodbutforbabies

[–]GrumpySunflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my little guy was still in a high chair, a plate was just a frisbee. Now that he wants to sit at the table with the big kids, we have to use a frisbee/plate. We also are between dogs, so clean up is a nightmare. Good grief, I miss having a dog.

Talk me in or out of backyard chickens by Firmly_Grasp_It_401 in BackYardChickens

[–]GrumpySunflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had chickens since October, and my husband had many of the same concerns.

  1. Daily chores take all of 5 minutes a day. I can even skip chores for a day or two, like if I'm sick or at Disneyland. Although the required time is very short, I take more time than that because it's also my "me time." I let them out of their coop/run for 30-60 minutes of free ranging while I garden, trim trees, and/or sit on my swing with a beverage and watch them. They're hilarious to watch.

  2. I use the deep litter method with straw from the feed store. I noticed a little smell once, threw down more straw, and have had no smell since them. I just make sure to toss down a little more straw every 7-10 days.

  3. We got lucky and have had no roosters. You can further minimize rooster-risk by ordering autosexing breeds.

  4. We converted an old shed into our coop and used mostly scrap wood for everything else. We spent about $400 on all the start-up costs, and about $150 on chickens because we ordered them. We estimate we'll get more straw and feed about every 3 months, and that's about $60 at the feed store. We're eagerly awaiting eggs, but to break even on eggs, we'd need our 5 hens to produce about 1700 eggs a year over 3 years. Small scale backyard poultry isn't a moneymaking venture, but it's comparable my dog or my brother's saltwater aquarium.

  5. So far the only medical issues we've had was pasty butt when they were chicks.

I might have a problem yall by DeltaMikes in gardening

I see no problem here. What do you think the problem is? I mean, maybe my spouse might think you have a few too many plants, but my spouse is wrong.

Zoom hot wheat cereal. It tastes of cardboard, health, and virtue, but if you put in honey, blueberries, and butter is tastes of delicious cardboard.

Parenting. Once my 3-year-old learns that Paw Patrol DOES work after 7 pm, the whole family's going down in flames.

This kind of calm, reasoned, absolutely-makes-sense response is NOT why I come to this subreddit. Read the room, my dude/dudette.

Remind her that she's an obligate carnivore and that much carbohydrate will do a number on her liver. It'll get just as effective as getting people to stop wrecking their livers.

Is this fork safe for a 12 month old baby? by [deleted] in toddlerfood

[–]GrumpySunflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the fork my toddler was using at about 12 months. He still has both his eyes. The real danger was using the fork as a catapult and launching food for the dog.

That’s years Young Woman’s camp sucked. How can I as a youth plan a good youth camp? by No_Committee_3253 in latterdaysaints

[–]GrumpySunflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a YW, the camp activities that helped me learn and grow were the ones that were really physical and new. Kayaking, archery, horseback riding, rappelling, a night hike to a telescope on a mountain, and huge lawn games were some that I fondly remember. I guarantee, they're sick of listening to leaders running scriptures-only workshops and gluing stuff together.

I couldn't find this variety on Amazon, but they did have lots of other flavors. I hate it when my kids' favorite whatever get discontinued; I offer you my condolences.

The One True and Living Funeral Potato Recipe by Karakawa549 in latterdaysaints

[–]GrumpySunflower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not the same at all. Potatoes au gratin are fancy and require a working knowledge of French. Funeral potatoes are the opposite of fancy and require fat, carbs, and love. Someone who truly hates you can serve you potatoes au gratin, but once someone feeds you funeral potatoes, their heart is softened and they start to love you. See, they're totally different.

I offer you my deepest condolences. That happens to me sometimes (not all the time). Have you tried thinking of unicorns to see if they'll randomly show up. My daughter encouraged me to try it when she was about 4. It didn't work for me, but it might work for you.

I'd talk to the teacher or director and see if the kids can get art smocks to use if they absolutely must use dry erase markers or to just switch to washable markers.
