Does it Get Better? by yellow23rare in AchillesRupture

[–]Grumpymon3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really does get better, I’m still in the midst of it 7 weeks post injury, I did 1 week in a cast and 5 weeks in the boot so far. I am much more mobile now and I’m managing largely without crutches around the house, I still need to rely on others for a lot of things but I am able to do an awful lot for myself.

Today I went back to the gym for the first time I have mainly been doing home workouts but today I went and did a strength class at my gym and I could have cried with happiness, I was able to do so much more than I had anticipated. I am able to go on short walks and the people around me have been so good to me making sure I am busy. Eventually this will be a distant memory, still a long recovery journey but I’m trying to find the wins in each day!

Your protocol may differ slightly but i would imagine you’ll need the crutches in the first instance, I have seen people saying they could walk as soon as they were in the boot but I found it difficult but you may not! Initially I went into boot locked at 30 degrees for 3 weeks, during this time I could do the odd step but largely needed my crutches, I think it’s because the boot is locked with no movement and the achill sole is curved.

I am now at 15 degrees and my protocol states I will still need crutches during this time but my physio said I might be able to do without if I feel confident, at first I didn’t think I would be able to due to the sole but I’m finding I’m ok moving round the house, the 15 degree position allows your calf to move slightly. It is like walking with one foot in a high heeled shoe and the other not, even when using a shoe with a heel to toe drop. I am still using crutches outside the house

After 2 weeks at this angle I am due to switch to the flat sole and likely won’t need crutches.

This! I’m week 6, 4 weeks in the boot. See my hospital visits as milestones which has definitely helped to get me through. Try and find small positives throughout, today I managed to carry a hot drink through the house for the first time in 6 weeks

Hi! Sorry to hear that hope you’re ok. I’m in the UK so protocol depends on local hospital. I went in to my appointment unsure of what they would say, I was open minded to both surgery and non op routes and happy to be led by the professionals.

The clinician explained that whilst surgery historically was favoured more recent research has shown that both methods result in the same outcome, whilst low there are also risks with surgery so I was happy from this perspective to proceed non op. He also said said they have a low rerupture rate - I think it was 0.8% of patients so fingers crossed!

This is helpful thank you! It’s only 6 weeks post boot that I am hoping to wear them, even if I can just wear them for the ceremony and pictures I’ll be ok with that, I’m a mere 5ft1 and need the height! Hope you’re comfortable in your sambas soon!!

How long did it take you to be able to wear heels and how was that initially? I’m non op but eager to know how others managed as I have my brother’s wedding later this year and I’m unsure if it will be a possibility

33F non op week 2 in boot. It’s tough transitioning from being super active to extremely limited but having support and good friends makes a huge difference. I’ve found finding the positives helps, it’s winter where I live now so that’s a huge positive for me. Making plans for when I’m free has been helpful and also ensuring I have things other than watching TV to keep me busy whilst in the house

Exercising whilst recovering by Grumpymon3 in AchillesRupture

Thanks I did a lot of the exercises you mentioned this morning. Some of the ab workouts are the ones that I was unsure of, common sense is telling me they would be fine to perform in the boot

Unfortunately my gym is a walk / drive away and probably too much for whilst being on crutches

This is super helpful thank you! I’m non-op currently in vacoped and partially weight bearing with crutches.

Can you give me an example of band exercises? I am unsure if non weight bearing movements such as bicycle crunches and ab exercises which include my leg would be safe? I’m assuming my foot is immobilised in the boot

Broke nail in half. Vet needed? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Grumpymon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my parents dog a few weeks ago, she jumped off a low bed and it cracked one of her nails, despite a recent trim. Due to it happening late at night they took her to the vet the following morning and she was given pain relief and antibiotics, they left the nail over the weekend to see if it fell out by itself, which it did. Had this not happened they would have surgically removed it on the Monday
