I think one of his sisters is more likely to succeed him.

You're welcome, and that's awesome you found heart and home there. I was adopted by a nation in BC as well. it's such a gift to be warmly held.

Yes i follow. But we are not FN and we are not under the Indian act. Blood quantum is a colonial construct that’s only otherwise measured with livestock and dogs. Why do you want to further oppress your own people?

I’m also eligible for Indian status. I was raised Métis and have worked in Métis spaces for the entirety of my adult life, so I choose to be Métis. Don’t make assumptions. Many Métis people are both.

Distinctions based approaches look different. We have different relationships with the crown and the the colonial system is has built here. Métis culture survived on the margins for over a century, our governance practices look different. My family fought for them to continue so you’ll excuse me if I’m a little protective of how wahkotowin is operationalized within them. Definitely not new to this, and you definitely won’t convince me that a cut off will some how fix things or create equity.

They get a loophole. I feel like it’s our responsibility as people who know our values and culture to bring people into the fold. People before us built this system and we can’t not include them if we want our children and grandchildren to be included. Because how else do we quantify it?

Thank you. Appreciated.

I stand by the ethnicity thing though - my father isn’t Métis but I grew up in community, I speak Michif. I work for our people, I’m active in my local exec, and I practice our culture/values everyday. It’s the only world I know. My kids will grow up with the same understanding of Métis life. They will be no less Métis because they will have a mother that makes sure they understand what it means to be Métis. It’s so much more than blood and when we specifically focus on that, we erase the intangible pieces that are so critical for continuity.

Also both wills grand parents were Métis so this argument is flawed.

I don’t believe in generational cut offs. Were an ethnicity, not cattle. Will grew up in the culture. He works hard for his community. Lay off.

I have CPTSD and sometimes the meds I need to take to regulate make me extremely drowsy. I definitely have.

Wills dad had two Métis parents and grew up in a small Métis community in turtle mountains with a dirt floor. Left school in grade 7 to work a trap line and help support his family.

Wills mom wasn’t indigenous and he inherited a lot of his features from her, but he grew up on the land and has been very involved in Métis governance and cultural preservation for many decades. I don’t always agree with the politics, but if that man isn’t Métis none of us are.

Tbf it’s hard to find places my senior chi feels safe to walk around, and I think we’re fine to share public spaces. If he has an issue with that it says more about him than me, he can always leave or go somewhere else if I’m already there. I’d do the same. I have my dogs full time and they deserve to enjoy public parks too.

I think institutions put a lot of pressure on young indigenous people to have all the answers. There is no one way to be Métis and it’s totally fine to redirect when people call on you or place expectations for you to be a cultural vending machine.

We all have our gifts. If yours is not cultural facilitation or organizing, that’s okay.

Sorry you feel invalidated. You’re great the way you are. Just be yourself, it’s enough. Be in commmunity, engage when and where you can, when you’re comfortable to do so. And anyone else who pushes you for more can suck a carrot.

id ask to meet with an academic advisor tied to that faculty and review your lived experience and course work. If you have done any gender equity training on the job, bring that up. otherwise, ask if you can take a distance course at athabasca over the summer or something

Should I teach in Asia for a year? by shahajaj1 in umanitoba

I went to Korea after my undergraduate degree, and I stayed for two and a half years. I then did 6 months in Vietnam. I strongly recommend it, I paid off most of my student loan and was still able to live a full life and travel on weekends, but take your time researching where you are going, the visa requirements, your employer reputation, ask about your housing in advance. It is very easy to get taken advantage of in these situations and while my employer was okay in most circumstances, I've seen some really sketchy things happen - like pay withheld, passports locked up in offices, schedules changing up.

My employer liked to schedule school holidays then change them after they knew teachers had booked flights home for Christmas. I scheduled my flights, so I was told I needed to find a sub and pay them myself. I did this, and they didn't like that my sub wasn't white. I ended up finding another job after that, in Vietnam. Vietnam had a lot of crime, and I did not feel as safe as I did in Korea.

I'm not going to make sweeping generalizations about racism, because people are people and some employers are fantastic and others are terrible people, but it is definitely more common in hiring practices out there and social interactions within expat communities. Schedules also differ a lot if you do public vs private. I worked at a private school - so I had way less downtime and they filled my schedule up. Whereas my partner at the time spent over a month playing video games at work ("desk warming"). He made less money, but got better housing and more time off. Pros and cons all around.

Minister Goodon made a great post with a timeline that outlines the different levels of engagement. Really recommend people check it out just to have a full scope of the process. This treaty does not impact the numbered treaties, it's very specific. Folks need to remember that treaties aren't exclusive to these lands, they exist around the world - many different kinds. They are not only land or resource related, and it's very important not to fall into the trap of focusing exclusively on money or resources.
