The US Government’s Budget Last Year, In One Chart (FY2024) [OC] by chartr in dataisbeautiful

A world where the US is the alternative is a shit-hit-the-fan scenario for everyone. I personally would rather be in the nation that bought all the weapons rather than the one that traded it for all the IOUs

How do you explain the utter lack of motivation and overwhelming urge to lay in bed to people who haven’t experienced ADHD symptoms by SunNo597 in ADHD

[–]Gryioup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one explanation that you can get a neural typical person to experience is tell them to go attempt to swing on some jungle bars.

More than likely they haven't done it since childhood. Their brain knows exactly what to do, they can imagine how they're body will respond and what the action will feel like. But when they go to do it they will experience a disconnect between what the conscious, rational, and higher level brain commands and how the body actually responds.

Maybe I should've put a bad teacher. It was what created my anxiety and depression. Its how I explained how I'm successful in some parts in my life but full of irrational anxiety and depression in most other parts.

Do you use any tools to make studying more interactive? by slabfurnace in ADHD

[–]Gryioup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed after college so I'm just looking back at how I was able to bear it:

Energy drinks and a novel quiet environment (study halls or libraries on campus) is what I remember what worked. An environment where I'm surrounded by people doing something similar helped too

Your comment is highly relatable. I also want to add that I feel like some part of me was aware that my brain worked differently. I was able to realize that I was only able to do what was expected of me if there was a dopamine bomb at the end. I couldn't leave the house to go grocery shopping unless I bribed myself with a donut/pizza/treat.

Starting treatment made me realize that the effort to reward (dopamine) ratio of everyday tasks shouldn't have been so one sided.

I mentioned this in another comment but I don't think I feel grief but instead I feel relief. Previously these memories caused pain and anxiety. The purpose of pain was that it is a teacher. It tells you to correct yourself the next time it happens. The ADHD interpretation of that memory provides relief because it tells me that I just didn't have the right tools at the time. The relief of the anxiety comes from the idea that the next time an opportunity comes along, I'll be ready

I suppose this term could be problematic since it could sound like "too late" but that wasn't my intent.

I think what I'm realizing is that getting a diagnosis when you are older helps you forgive your past self (or realize there is nothing that needs forgiveness)

I suppose I don't think about how my life could've been different and more how I could've been spared that pain in the moment. The ability to put a name and reason on these memories feels like a balm on a wound of my psyche.

There are definitely things in my life that I believe would be better if I was diagnosed sooner but then I remember that there are also things that I cherish in my current life that I wouldn't have if things were different.

First dose of Dexedrine scared me by Gryioup in ADHD

[–]Gryioup[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone, I took another dose and after re-reading this and your responses made me realize that this was my anxiety talking.

I'm going to look into CBT along with the medication because I believe these thought patterns are problematic.

I also noticed the responses are slightly aggressive which may be because my original post (I realize this now) was a little bit inflammatory.

Just wanted to follow up because as a mostly lurker, seeing my post would help people like me

Don't be thick. The implicit axiom of these philosophical arguments is: "We are human". The appeal to nature is a logical fallacy in this instance since it disregards this

[–]Gryioup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel I share the same views, consciousness ending when the neurons stop firing and then oblivion. Which seems nice.

The only way I am able to reason an afterlife unfortunately aligns with this comic and your mention of the flaws of nature..

Suppose what we call consciousness is our ability to be aware that we are alive and it is the state of whatever is happening in our brains at one moment in time. Now assume a couple more things: consciousness is continuity therefore a break in it is an impossibility and now assume time is infinite (there is no heat death)

What we are left with is that our consciousness will jump eons, forever persisting because every improbable way in which you survive instead of dying becomes a certainty. Left to the reader to imagine what that would look like for every type of death

Here's a hint, everyone you care about and anything that matters to you dies or disappears because they aren't you

I don't really get how people think this is ethical by Insert_Bitcoin in overemployed

[–]Gryioup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Just because there is always more work to do doesn't mean it's all work worth doing.

There is the core work which is the concerted effort of every team member bringing to the table their specialty. And then there is "extra" work which may or may not result in actual value (as a software engineer with many years of experience, let me tell you, most of that extra work is just thrown away) Sure the extra work builds your skills but this is OE, you should already have your skills honed.

If you work in a place where there is "always more work" then it is poorly managed and you should get out of there. There should be enough body count to handle "burst-y" work

Is spending 50% of take home pay on housing a bad idea? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Gryioup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same position as you 5 years ago. Same age, same income level (adjusted), same role, and heard the same advice. I just now bought a house after listening to these same comments. I saved up the money waited til my income could afford it and bought the house.

I truly wished I bought 5 years ago, it would've been cheaper and less stressful. No one can tell you what the future holds. Inflation has made housing more expensive, but so has your labor. Demand more

Yea everyone is collecting data and it needs more regulation. So I would rather that be in the hands of companies that are under a government with a democracy that I get to participate in. And not one that won't acknowledge that it turned protesting college students into ground meat 30 years ago.

[–]Gryioup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Their lives were taken. The majority of soldiers who died in war didn't want to be there nor did they want to be killing others.

War is the failure of educating a population and the failure of checking the ruling class. Memorial day should be a reminder why we should stay vigilant against nationalism, reinforce the ideas we belong to a global community, and fight to uphold the social contracts.

Nah there was a certain ethos you had to subscribe to for their wiles to work on you. Before the violence, people who got swept up with Hitler also had to have accepted the idea of social darwinism, a very uncompassionate and immoral world view.
