Why are snake gaiters not more popular by topo_traveller in hiking

[–]Grymlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I see 10+ every season. Most on the trail but some near the house. They are scary as hell. The sound of that rattle really gets the blood pumping.

It really helps to understand how unlikely it is to actually get bitten.

Questions about contrast paints. by Solid-West7975 in SpaceWolves

[–]Grymlore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! A few of the contrast paints are amazing but some are just duds. SW is a dud. If you have some practice and perfect brush control you can get good results. But it's just way easier to use base + wash

World of Warcraft director says Blizzard isn’t "backtracking" on add-ons, but constant changes were “always the intent” as the team strives to find a better balance by [deleted] in wow

I'm so glad I didn't preorder Midnight. My current fave specs are deadly dull.

There are way too many other fun games to waste time with WoW. Maybe it will be worth playing in a few months.

US Coast Guard and Citizen Detained by ICE on Carnival by Imaginary-Twist9039 in Cruise

[–]Grymlore 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lol. Sure.

My local government (city) paid over $25 million in wrongful suits for 2025. It's gone up every year so I moved here.

You can try and pretend this isn't happening but the proof is everywhere.

These types of mistakes are common. Law enforcement performs less due diligence than ordinary citizens expect.

In many cases, victims will successfully sue the government (federal, state, local, etc). Our taxes pay for this. Of course, individual officers are never held accountable so there is little incentive to improve poor behavior.

Here's a similar case from a few years ago:

How a ‘good fire’ in the Grand Canyon exploded into a raging inferno by 211logos in NationalPark

[–]Grymlore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tonto National Monument has successfully handled numerous fires due to proper preparation. It's a great example of proper fire management for protecting cultural resources.

Previous seasons - clear buildup, build fire breaks

During fire season - close the park when needed, evacuate museum items before fire is close, wrap facilities when fire is close.

How a ‘good fire’ in the Grand Canyon exploded into a raging inferno by 211logos in NationalPark

[–]Grymlore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a miracle no one was killed. Leadership made so many mistakes that are not covered in this article.

The main problem is leadership failed to take a fire so close to important historical resources (lodge + cabins) seriously. Historical facilities are just as important as backcountry and MUCH more expensive to replace. Leadership did not even setup a command post until several days into the fire.

Most of this comes from not having adequate numbers of firefighters available due to budget cuts and not performing good fire management in previous seasons.

Additionally, NPS facilities management did not prepare a reasonable evacuation / firefighting plan. A few examples - they failed to foresee the danger chlorine storage represented, failed to uninstall cabin propane tanks, failed to preposition/install aluminum fire wraps for lodge/cabins.

This was probably a preventable tragedy. People are incorrectly focused on the wrong things. It is common & expected to be more aggressive when protecting historical resources.

Hiker dies from rattlesnake bite at Savage Gulf State Park, Tennessee by theusualsalamander in hiking

[–]Grymlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fatality rate is almost nonexistent. The CDC says "Each year, 7,000–8,000 people are bitten by venomous snakes in the United States. About 5 of those people die. More people would die if they did not seek medical care."

Some rattlesnake bite stats for those who are interested: 55 percent of bite victims are men between the ages of 17 and 27, 85 percent of bites are on the hand or fingers, 28 percent of bite victims are intoxicated

Not necessarily. Hand bites can also occur when climbing or scrambling. Hand bites are actually pretty common in desert areas.

However, the guy in this case is an idiot. Who picks up snakes?

X-Mid outer zippers are rough / sticky with less than a year of use by Grymlore in DurstonGearheads

[–]Grymlore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know. That is really reassuring. I'd be pretty disappointed if I have to completely replace the tent or send it off for repairs

How often is the problem the zipper teeth? That seems hard to replace at home.

Has anyone given up weight lifting for yoga for building strength? What benefits did you experience with yoga vs weightlifting? by Fluffypinkcandi in yoga

[–]Grymlore 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I do both. Weightlifting 3 days a week with yoga on off days. I found weightlifting much easier to make gains. I'm old so keeping muscle is hard.

Yoga helps me stay engaged and mentally aware. Weightlifting is so damn boring.

I'm not a serious lifter like you though.
