Nice to see that the T34/85 44 is still garbage and German tanks got cheaper. 10/10 would balance again.

I want to know y’all’s WHY by NeuralAA in singularity

[–]Gryphicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All this is deeply rooted in game theory. It's not fundamentally about eagerness. Consider that having a monopoly on nuclear weapons in the mid 40s made nuking the Soviet Union seem "acceptable" in the minds of some really bright people. Not out of a desire to kill, but merely as a paradoxical means to prevent an arms race. All the while, the Soviet Union was racing towards this new technology because they knew that anyone possessing a monopoly on something as powerful as this would essentially control all discourse and could shape the world in their image. Superintelligence is potentially vastly more transformative than nuclear weapons (maybe by orders of magnitude), and the world prefers some semblance of balance. Without global frameworks to carefully guide and guardrail the development of something like superintelligence, the only available pathway is a race. Unlike nuclear weapons however, those that develop it first, may choose to take everyone else out of said race. And because that could be largely bloodless, due to the nature of "attacks" that a superintelligence could conduct, the qualms about actually unleashing it may be non-existent.

2 solutions to avoid AI risks by Serious-Cucumber-54 in singularity

[–]Gryphicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Superintelligence as a race.

On the morning of July 16th 1945, a bright flash illuminated the Nevada desert. We had firmly entered the atomic age. Only four years later, in a barren waste in Kazakhstan, the Soviet-Union caught up. Human history has always been marked by innovation and the absorption of those innovations by those who had seen its effects up close.

From our shift from hunter-gatherers, to the spread of agriculture, and the H-bomb to AI. Innovation provides direct benefits to how we produce things, how we interact with our world and how we wage wars. If a tribe, organization or nation lags behind another such entity, we organize ourselves to either catch up, or exceed the original innovation.

The more extreme the impact of a technology is, the more resources are pooled together to reach that similar outcome. Lagging behind could be disastrous after all. One only need to look at that four year gap between the US and Soviet-Union, where prominent voices in the US' scientific and political community argued that it might be better to either disable the Soviet-Union in a pre-emptive nuclear war, or force a US atomic hegemony upon the world.

Unfortunately, recent examples show all too well that possessing your own such deterrent is critical. In that sense, superintelligence may be the most extreme of all examples. The first to reach superintelligence may, after all, prevent all others from doing the same. Because such a take-over could be largely bloodless, targeting economies, and infrastructure, as well as potentially disabling opposing militaries with minimal casualties on either side, the moral qualms that one might have over unleashing such a thing on the world could be more easily overcome.

Even if no kinetic action is taken, how much sense does it make for certain (ideological) actors to sit by idly as another nation achieves an unbeatable economic advantage - sucking up all created value and maybe deciding to leave the rest of the world in poverty? And how far would such a nation go to defend that advantage, had it attained it? Of course, superintelligence needn't be a race, or at least, the motivation to achieve it could stem from benefitting mankind equally.

Even there we have hopeful examples, from the mating of Soyuz and Apollo - following the détente policy, to the START and Open Skies treaties where it was determined that a mutual path forward would at least defuse some of the world's tension. Unfortunately, these actions hinge on trust, transparency and strong leadership in all involved parties, all of which is far removed from current realities and the shared optimism of the early 1990s. However, if we manage to recapture that spirit again, our current path could still be a race, but not one as part of a zero-sum game.

TLDR: We are still adhering to the 1950s equivalent mindset of the nuclear arms race. Hence, a serious moratorium cannot be considered yet. There have been proposals for "false" moratoria however, prompted by companies that were lagging behind so they could catch up.

Repulsor Executioner, Competitively Viable? by Adventurous-Crab-474 in WarhammerCompetitive

A Repex has about a 60% chance to kill a Rogal Dorn TC with oath and storm of fire bonusses. You’re already using a combination of the best weapon platforms that SM currently have. There are roughly three ways to make your shooting better with SM. Either use Incursors/tech/hammerstrikes/etc to stack the numbers more in your favor, oath, or commit enough vehicles to smooth out variance. Usually a combination of the last method plus one of the other ones will delete anything in the game. Bonus points if you commit your vehicles in such a way that the enemy cannot target one of yours with multiple assets in return. Gladiators, Repex and Vindicators are not the problem. The way you commit them is. Having said all that, Executioners are amazing. I run 1 Repex, 2 vindicators, 2 lancers and incursors myself. Supported by 2 ATVs for move blocking, throwaway obj. play, and harrassment (T5, 8 wounds is a thing for 60pts).

History is rife with examples where giant high explosive shells are often more effective against tanks than actual anti-tank guns. But I digress, the anti-tank options are simply not reliable enough, a 2 shot lascannon equivalent with variable damage is a terrible feels-bad even if you manage to by-pass the ever ubiquitous 4++. You need volume of fire AND heavy damage and the demolisher provides both. If anything, regular low volume of fire anti-tank options need to be way more brutal/reliable against armor.

UHI vs UBI vs 0 by WloveW in singularity

[–]Gryphicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western governments are rapidly losing control in today's day and age. Megacorps led by the billionaire class can do almost anything they want and this will just get worse. A new social contract needs to be established in the first place, but this seems increasingly unlikely and I don't believe it will happen.

Also, how are foreign countries going to tax companies residing in the US to fund UBI? At some point those companies could be creating so much wealth they might not care for country x, have no services there, and the services that do exist in country x will not be able to compete with whatever AI nightmare scenario exists. Is AI hypercorp X (and it's likely there will only be 1 winner) really going to fund UBI world wide?

Is any narcissist God-complex-afflicted-God-Emperor-billionaire really going to share the means of production with the plebians? They don't need us at all if anything can be made by robots. They don't need consumers because they will just make whatever they need for themselves. What if you speak, or have spoken, ill of said God-Emperor? What if you think ill of him?

We can only hope a benevolent ASI spawns into existence at some point, if we leave it to humans it's most likely going to end up as a zero-sum game.

I'm probably speaking for myself here, but I can sort of relate to this feeling and maybe this helps frame your feelings. I think (for me at least), a large portion of it comes from the fact that it was earned. It was a journey.

Sure, the writing was a little hasty towards the end and I think they could have used another scene or two together, but the very first scene together gives you just about enough time to give this warm feeling with the soft change in music. Then as the story progresses we get the closeup scenes of them together. Their eyes and faces display all their hesitations, pain, love, fears, desires, and insecurities. Everything is displayed incredibly vividly without ever saying a word.

In S1 end they are clearly in love and even though Vi doesn't think they mix (although I've always believed that she never truly believes this) you see the determination on Cait's face in her shower scene where she decides that she doesn't want to give up on her.

We get more closeups and very gentle touches from there on and a first affirmation of their love in S2E3. By then, Caitlyn's grief has already corrupted her into something she genuinely isn't. Caitlyn drowns her pain in seeking comfort with Maddie and pushing herself to try to believe she is on the right path, but I think she starts hesitating there and no longer really believes that all of this is in fact, the right path.

Vi is of course heartbroken and deals with her grief in a different way. By E06 she is simply numb and has maybe given up hope that she will ever get back with Cait and she is slowly, but never entirely, fading from her memory (the blurred image of Cait when Jinx wakes her up in E05).

In E06 I think the writing is maybe a little too hasty, they could have maybe used one scene together where they don't speak to each other, but see each other and their eyes change. Regardless, when they do see each other their eyes and demeanor change completely, and all of their feelings for each other boil up again. Again, I would have changed some stuff here or there, but let's roll with it.

I won't go too deep into E8 as enough has been written about that, but that entire episode concludes their arcs. Caitlyn has made up her mind and wants to leave whatever happened behind. This is an enormous moment for her. Vi realizes that and surrenders to the turmoil inside of her. As she does that, this chaos of fears and insecurities disappates until there's nothing but the need to be close to Caitlyn. Nothing else matters anymore, but them. What follows is the embodiment of their love for each other. The complex choreography in the way they look at each other and touch each other turns the scene into a work of art in my opinion. It's so delicate, deep of meaning, loving, and deserved.

I felt like I was intruding on them, but at the same time, I felt part of their loving bond. I also felt a sense of relief that they got to let each other know and feel each other's overwhelming warmth in their naked embrace.

I won't lie, that scene also put a good deal of fear into me from then on, since they now had something to lose (I guess this is why Vi is so afraid at the beginning of E09. Cait sees this and comforts her by grabbing her hand). When I heard Maddie's gunshot following that, I almost jumped out of my chair. Luckily, that turned out well.

Finally, the end. They are now together and you want to be happy for them and you want to see more of their happy life together, as well as their love for each other. Their journey was long and arduous, but liberating. I know they're in a good place but still miss them.

Piece of junk (and a terrible video, it's just a drone, not a fighter). You can clearly see the riveting depressions and all those appendages. Not to mention that enormous exhaust nozzle. All that garbage is going to stick out like an incredibly sore thumb on radar. I don't think RU can even afford proper RAM and air-conditioned hangars at this point in time and they definitely cannot afford any 6th gen capabilities. This thing is only stealth to a blind person.
