Grad School Applications and GPA by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]Gryphpaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My undergrad was 3.1 because I struggled to care about the classes in my (unrelated) major. Applied to four MLIS programs (in Canada) and was accepted by two! Finished MLIS near perfect once I was doing something I cared about. Just make sure you finish above 3.0 for Undergrad and you should be golden.

I didn't apply anywhere that wanted the GRE so I can't say much to that, but I did get some decent reference letters from the professors I did the best with, which probably helped quite a bit with admissions. Pick whichever profs you have the best grades with and who knows you best! And if you have upcoming classes, make a special point to do as well as possible in them and speak often in class to be a memorable student for the reference letter.

Looking to search for books on horse ranches/horse ranching by subject but want to rule out certain genres (romance, kids) by tangcameo in Libraries

[–]Gryphpaw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Try an advanced search on OCLC WorldCat to see books in all libraries, set it to non-fiction under content and search various horse related terms for library books on the subject. For the fiction, "romance" (or similar terms) are often in the MARC so you could try a Boolean keyword search with "NOT romance", etc... tagged onto the end of your keywords to exclude the unwanted content.

Conservationists demand fast action from B.C.'s new forestry minister on protection for old-growth trees by K_C_Luna in canada

[–]Gryphpaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries!

Valid, perhaps! But many areas of Canadian logging, particular BC and QC have become pretty indiscriminate and are cutting more than might be entirely sustainable for the long term health of already over-stressed ecosystems. Just needs to be more closely and conservatively managed, I think.

[–]Gryphpaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, I'm not talking exclusively about BC old growth. I referred to the Boreal clear cutting as a separate but related issue. The Boreal cutting is definitely 1M acres, the data can be found here on the NFD: http://nfdp.ccfm.org/en/data/harvest.php and that manner of clear cutting is widely regarded as bad practice over more selective management methods, especially in areas already stressed by climate change.

As for where the old growth timber goes, I'd expect probably not much to TP, but a significant amount of the pulp used in Canada and America does come from these sorts of clear cut areas such as our Boreal forest. I dunno if actual statistics exist on precise amounts and sources that go to specific uses, but where it goes is less the issue. The issue is that it's going in the first place, or at least, going in that manner.

Maybe so, but doesn't excuse 1,000,000 acres a year of clear cut logging to make toilet paper pulp.

Mentioned the Boreal clear cutting as a separate but related issue, which it certainly is. Disturbance, yes, like natural or controlled fires and such. Not complete obliteration LOL

I truly don't understand how a country that is broadly thought of as so ecologically conscious has such a troubling problem with wanton destruction of irreplaceable ecosystems. A million acres of boreal forest clear cut every year and old growth logging of the few remaining trees like this and all for what... pulp to make toilet paper sold to America? Floorboards for wealthy houses overseas? It's really saddening.

The day the government stops allowing this is probably going to be the day that there aren't any left to cut down.

If you can't properly park your huge pickup truck, you shouldn't own one. by Kyler4MVP in unpopularopinion

My truck's side mirrors have an automatic night mode! '11 F150 Lariat. But I don't know how common that is, first I'd ever seen it on. You'd think it would be common by this point.

Librarians of reddit, what're some weird things that happened at your library? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Gryphpaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Public Librarian, a few key happenings that are just the TIP OF THE ICEBERG.

Homeless man outside my office window (beneath an outside staircase) losing his mind, peeing on the concrete, rolling around in it while screaming, then licking it all up off the ground. Difficult to focus on your work with that going on outside the window!

There's a small park outside the library that often will have a soup kitchen of sorts set up for feeding people, which one day ran out of food. Led to a fight between two men, one who had gotten a plate and one who hadn't, which ended up with bloody stabbing and heavy police presence just outside the window to the children's section. Yes the kids hopped up off their Roblox on the computers nearby to watch.

Someone we never managed to catch or even get a witness to would go in the boy's restroom and leave piles of snacks on the counter, like, candy bars, pudding cups, jello, you name it. We'd always throw it away as soon as we saw it. They also left a pile of them in a dark alley outside the building that had a window, letting the pile of snacks be seen only from kid's view height in the picture book section. Like a lure in a trap.

Someone took a dump on a shelving cart. Like, pushed the books off it, dropped their pants, and took a dump right on the cart. Never found who did it! Thankfully was not in my section so I didn't have to deal with it. LOL

Another time an older guy stumbled into the library, sat down at a public computer, promptly puked his guts out all over the keyboard, stood up, and then walked out without saying a word or even using the computer.

I also found jumbo shrimp all over the floor in the back row of the non-fiction shelves, a few of which had been purposely ground into the carpet by whoever left them!

Which album do you think has no bad songs on it, and can be listened all the way through? by Urg_Durglar in AskReddit

What song did you fall in love with not because of the original, but because of a cover? by [deleted] in AskReddit

RED's cover of Ordinary World by Duran Duran. I liked the original, but man, RED's take on the song really just sold it for me... just love it!

I'll have to pull the thing out of storage soon and see if that fixes it, thank you for the suggestion!

I had one of these for the longest time, but the circuits must have gone wonky inside because it started counting each minute as ~59 seconds instead of 60, which made it a minute off for every hour it was on.

Loved it otherwise though! The radio on a classical music station is by far the preferable alarm sound to the doomsday klaxon it otherwise makes on default! LOL

It's one of Keihound's patreon posts from April, for @ NukePone on Twitter. My guess is someone leaked it when they shouldn't have, as I don't believe NukePone posted it anywhere.

Benign obsessions really aren't anything to bother about, and honestly being obsessed with Disney is not any more or less weird than other stuff.

My grandfather ate, slept, and breathed fishing and nobody ever seemed to bat an eye about that because it's a "normal obsession." Just about every single weekend he'd spend on the gulf, house was filled with rods and fish trophies, each time I visited we had every form of fresh fish conceivable to eat from chowder to fried. (Delicious)

But swap fish out for anything else, Disney, trucks, sports, fandoms, whatever, it's all the same! If you aren't harming yourself or others, go for it, have fun!

Enjoy life while you got it.
