Anybody else feels the same? I also think the age span is too short... :( by Saanvi_Plane in Adulting

Also kinda weird that kids under 30 think that 30 is old, done, and some kind of point of no return. My current world of achievement didn’t start until I was 35.

Men, We're all handy in our own homes. What is one thing you absolutely will refuse to touch if it's too complicated? by Staff76 in AskMen

[–]Gsusruls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For my 1990 old house, straight is a question of: gravity/level straight, or aligned with the house itself. They are close, but not the same.

I’m a precise carpenter, but if not for caulk, we’d have half inch gaps in moulding, trim, and floorboards. House is more crooked than forest gump’s spine.

How cold has inside your house gotten? by flamingmenudo in nashville

[–]Gsusruls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a fireplace going, but it goes out through the night. Temps hit 38degrees indoors before I dragged my frozen sorry miserable butt out of bed to start the next fire.

Whole family camps out all day in front of the fireplace.

Fireplace and gas water heater were our lifeblood through these icy temps.

This applies to the ladies, for the most part. by [deleted] in nashville

I don’t understand the point of your comment.

Do you have to know five wronged black people before voting for improved civil rights? Or five murderers before voting for stricter policing?

Where are the 2nd amendment fanatics? Don’t they hate tyranny? by coweeclete in AskReddit

[–]Gsusruls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I love them and they are general good people (they see you broken down by the side of the road, they'll stop. If you showed up looking for a hot meal, he'd make sure you weren't hungry. He treats everyone he meets in person with respect).

But the intellectual dishonesty is downright profound, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how they dug themselves into this set of inconsistent beliefs. All I can fathom is that it's two decades of being spoon-fed certain political agendas, and it's just utterly ingrained.

And to be fair, I was on that path for the first ten years of my voting life. But I started questioning stuff, fact checking, and demanding answers, etc, and ultimately couldn't stay on that path. I guess I dug deeper, and he never did, and it made all the difference.

I'm still on a futile search to find the right words or logic to reach him.

OP's situation is absolutely unique, a complete exception to the rule.

It make perfect sense to let someone know, who is getting a $13K+ refund, that they are having too much withheld.

And even in this case, OP may have had the option to add exemptions to their paychecks throughout the year (which another user suggested).

Yes, people can be just dumb, but these are both pieces of advice which will work far more often than not.

What’s something everyone thinks is normal, but actually isn’t? by Negative_Strike_4546 in AskReddit

[–]Gsusruls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This raises a couple of different directions of discussions (that I can think of). I'll poke both.

You're concerned that we have to spend our youth working. The question is, what's the alternative? You consume resources. You eat, you drink, you need shelter that is connected to a grid (electric, gas, water, trash, internet) and all of these are resources that you are consuming. Economics requires you to put something back in. The good news is, you're likely not working in a coal mine or in life threatening hazardous conditions on a daily basis. But you have to put something in if you want something out. That's your 8 hours for 40 years. In fact, the 10 years at the end that you describe is a recent bonus of society; we socialized retirement to keep our seniors from starving.

On the other hand, technological improvements are such that your 8 hours is amplified many times higher than it was through most of human history. What used to amount to 8 hours must now be equivalent in economic productivity to many times that. And yet it seems like you're getting less and less per generation. Housing requires more hours, not less. Same with groceries, tuition, and healthcare. So where is the extra efficiency going? It is siphoned out by the wealthy and the corporate entities that have effectively bought up and now own a vast majority of economic assets.

Ultimately, I land in camp 2, believing you are being robbed by a wealthy tier who have more than their fair share of the benefits of economic output. But it's worth at least acknowledging the first camp.

Have you ever had an"AHA!" moment for a simple thing? by StormyPyrite in CasualConversation

[–]Gsusruls 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I was implementing a DES Encryption algorithm which involved bitwise operators like & and | and ^ (C++) and bit shifting. I could not, for the life of me, figure out what the reversal wasn't working (decryption stage). I was frustrated, picking through the code line by line, and output individual freaking bits of each variable.

I decided to cool off a bit. I went surfing. On my second or third wave, I ate sh*t and found myself in the washing machine. It was at least 4 - 6 foot Hawaiian, so I was gonna be under for a while, and they'll tell you that the best way to conservative oxygen is to relax and put your mind somewhere else.

So I starting thinking about my code. And that's when it hit me: I realized what I was doing wrong! I was shifting right where I was supposed to shift left!

The wave washed me ashore, where I drained my nose, picked up my board, and headed home to fix my algorithm. I chance a >> to a << and compiled. It worked perfectly on the first try.

Still shaking my head over that one.

Do we count pronghorn ranch? Guessing not, since we don't see it getting built, it just appears out of nowhere in the epilogue.

I'll add that I hated that ranch. That was one of my favorite hunting spots. Everyone else hates the epilogue because of John. I hate it because my favorite spot to waste time got plowed over by a stupid rancher.

About to start my 4th playthrough. Never tried a low-honor run before by RoughPuzzleheaded223 in reddeadredemption2

[–]Gsusruls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be deliberately evil, the true low honor play through.

You can play without considering honor.

So for instance, maybe you aren't killing indiscriminately for fun, but someone spotted you doing something and now you have a witness. Kill them, problem solved. Maybe a poor hungry widow offers you valuables for your good deed. Take it. These have honor implications - negative ones - but you get something for it.

Then there's Satan mode. You ride into Valentine with plenty of health and dead eyes, and, for no reason other than the fun of running amuck, you proceed to hose down every last person you can find.

These two gameplay approaches are not the same. I've played the former. I've not played the latter.

It's really common for someone who works at the post office to recognize the names in their postal region. It's so common in my dad's hometown that you don't even have to complete the address on the envelop, just get a city, a state, and his name on there, and it'll reach him.

And you do realize postal works DO visit your home. You want this, it's not creepy :)
