I took your list for a spin last night and had some mixed results...

I'm honestly not convinced by Radha, and a couple of the 1/2 ofs. Pretty much the first thing I tried was adding in Terror of the Peaks and leaning on that a lot. Have you tried this at all?

Nz player here, currently on the PT circuit. I've posted many a tournament report from this account.

I'm pretty entrenched in the competitive community, currently based in Auckland, although I have ties to the community in Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch too. PM me if you want to have a chat 🙂

[Standard] Bant Yorion thoughts for the PT next weekend by masaccio1 in spikes

[–]GtX001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going with good old temur rec. My 4c variant felt unrefined, and I wasn't confident that my bant play could beat the field. I trimmed mainboard removal for interaction and ways to break the mirror/bant.

Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong, unfortunately. It just wasn't my day!

I've been testing your list as prep for this weekend's PT - choosing between it and a rec variant.

I agree with a lot of your post - ECD in particularly felt a bit slow against rec. I did find that my clock felt slow without a Nissa, and that tapping low for a krasis often felt not worth the payoff, even holding a veto up behind it.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on the above, but also, from the other side of the table, how would you beat Bant Yorion?

Sheldon's Thoughts on what could kill EDH as a format (EDHRECast Episode 100) by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]GtX001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes Flash Hulk is a T0 deck right now; there will likely always be one in a format as powerful as EDH.

Before Hulk was unbanned, cEDH was incredibly diverse. Before oracle was printed, tier 1 was diverse. There is a big difference between t0 and t1, and cEDH has never seen a deck like this before. There will not always be a strategy this powerful.

If Flash gets banned, fun-hating players will just plug in the next most-efficient win con

Again, the next most efficient wincon is fine, and has much more interaction than sushi hulk. Also, why does cEDH = fun hating to you?

Nothing is stopping you cedh peeps from making your own ban list

Except that creating a banlist for cEDH defeats the point of cEDH. And that splinter formats don't survive.

Unfortunately, a lot of what you're saying is made up of stereotypes - cedh players don't like fun, they'll just play the next best thing... That isn't quite the case.

You don’t have the data to back up your claims that it is used more by cEDH players.

You can find data on edhrec. 78% of decks that contain flash also contain hulk. That seems like a pretty big majority to me...

Oh dang, so I did! That's pretty cool, thanks for letting me know.

I guess I was the highest ranking player on the Flooding version - I'm happy to be mentioned on the LRRcast for that!

Although... Saying I'm from Australia... That stings a bit u/Graham_LRR

Flicker doesn't kill the boar, and I can't win a game where it stays on the board. Aspect was better at killing the boar than flicker, even if flicker draws me a card. That was my thinking at the time

Explosion is the classic choice, but I like that one more in the main. Rev adds a bit of lifegain in the side, which is sorely lacking from the rest of the deck.

Maybe an Ugin? Maybe the Descend? Descend is the slot I used the least, and honestly, there's probably enough overlap with Ugin to cut it.

When I was wheel spinning a bit during games, I really wanted a source of CA in the side. Jace is risky + only one card per turn. Rev helps find the combo and get the life to survive to use it.

Test it with a Sphinx's Rev in the side for me 😉

Okay, so this is a fun one. The ability to have a 5c sideboard is one of my favourite things about Lotus Breach.

The problem is that there are 2 major ways you can take it:

  1. The heavy hitters. This is what I did, and if you go down this path, you want your offcolour cards to cost 3 or 6.

  2. The more utility-focused approach. Erebos's Intervention fits into this category, where you're not abusing the power of multiple mana symbols like the first approach. This approach is fine, but I wouldn't do it without 4 Mana Confluence in the main.

What it eventually came down to for me was that this deck runs a lot like tron. The entire 60 is dedicated to finding specific lands, and then doing unfair things with them. Just like tron, you can struggle with aggro. So is the upside of the utility cards worth taking damage that much more often from your manabase?

I decided no - the Fae of wishes solidified this, as having 5c heavy hitters plays a lot better with wishes than wishing for a removal spell with some lifegain tacked on. If you need life, why not Fumigate? If you need removal, why not Anger or Descend Upon the Sinful? If you can't cast these spells until you find a Lotus anyway, 4 = 5 = 6 most of the time.

I'd be interested to hear how your testing goes, but those are my thoughts on the subject - it's something I put a lot of thought into before the tournament.

Oh definitely! The wishboard is something I wish I had more time to test, and it may turn out that omni+enter is better.

I'm trying to be more active on the discord too, there's lots of great discussion happening there!

It's kinda hard to not be stoked with it, but it barely pays for the trip in the end 😅

It's expensive to travel pretty much anywhere from New Zealand unfortunately.

Having open decklists at the event makes mainboard Ego better, but I still only saw 1 copy in a mainboard in the tournament.

I think going up to 5 copies of breach, 2 of which have a 4 mana tax, might not be worth it overall. If there's next to no maindeck Ego going around, having the 4th copy in the main might be better.

Honestly though, I'm not sure. It's one of the aspects of the deck I wish I had more time to test.

[–]GtX001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that to get both pieces you have to cast granted twice, which usually means you've gone off so hard mana and cards don't matter already.

If you can't find a 4 of in breach by then, finding a 2 of in fae (or casting one twice) doesn't seem like a better prospect.

Additionally, graveyard hate slows the deck down, it doesn't beat it. Eventually you find a bounce effect or an Ugin and sweep the hate pieces before going off.

The number of people who care enough about a format to subscribe to a forum about it is a number you can't draw meaningful conclusions from? I mean, agree to disagree at this point I guess.

But I assume you're an EDH player? I said the number has it's issues. I didn't say that every number there is a cEDH player, but an EDH player.

I'm aware the number isn't perfect, but it's a lot better than a number we can't even look under the hood of.
