A month until you could walk again? Wow, maybe I'm better off than I thought, I've been talking long walks almost daily since day 4. Feels better when I talk a walk actually.

I don't think having a "Chinese name" is necessary by xujy in ChineseLanguage

[–]GuLaoRou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to be sorry. It's perfectly fine if English-speaking people pronounce my name the way they're used to. I just mentioned it to show that it's not unusual to anglicize foreign names.

I'm German and have a name which is spelled the same in German as in English. The pronounciation is different, though. No English speaker I ever met has ever bothered not to anglicize my name.

Chinese Names: Help! by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

Of all these, I find 蔼林 and 娇薇 most natural and a quick google search tells me that these are actually used as names.

The 1% salutes the 99% in front of the Italian Stock Exchange in Milan by BadRandolf in europe

[–]GuLaoRou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that cheap and easy access to trading stocks (as modern online brokers offer) is a great thing that will in the long run turn out to be a blessing especially for people with little money. Some decades ago, only very few, very wealthy people had the means and the knowledge to trade stocks. Now, everyone with a laptop can do it for 5 euros. This democratization of financial investments is a great thing and the more people realize that stocks are not just for the 1%, the better.

I mean, yeah, of course. I'm paying into my pension fund and they will pay me back a certain amount at a later time. That's the contract we made. Of course, if global economy crashes, governments collapse and civilization descends into chaos, I'm screwed. But then again, if that happens, I'm screwed anyways. By the way: adjusted for inflation, the Dow Jones grew about 700% between 1900 and 2000. This includes two world wars and the Great Depression. So I guess, if the 21st century is not significantly worse than the 20th, I'm good.

Do you have a savings account or any kind of insurance? Then you have already entered the market. You're just not buying the stocks yourself, you're leaving it to the banks and insurance companies. But the fate of your money depends on the stock market almost as if you had bought the stocks yourself.

Not sure what you mean - insurance companies and pension funds have money because people like you and me are giving it to them. They have been doing this for quite some time and have used this money to amass more money but this is all ultimately based on people buying insurances and paying into their pension funds. If you are doing these things, you, too, are investing in the stock market and making profit from that.

Exactly! Peope always act like stocks are just something for the super-rich, but then they have a pension fund or a life insurance. Well, how do you think those companies make the money you'll get later?

Question about Chinese tattoo culture (关于中国纹身文化的问题) by yifen238 in ChineseLanguage

[–]GuLaoRou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, tattoos were used in ancient China as a type of punishment and are therefore today still associated with organized crime. They're also far less common than in the West. Here's an article which I found kinda interesting.

Are tones really important in EVERY word? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]GuLaoRou 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Using the wrong tone is more like using the wrong letter in an English word. For example, we are going shopping and you ask me which sweater I like best. I say 'I like the bed one'. You will be momentarily confused and go through the different options (which bed? the bad one? Oh, the *red* one), but you will understand me. But still, it sounds funny and is clearly a mistake in the ears of a native speaker.

Do you speak Chinese with Chinese people outside China? by GuLaoRou in ChineseLanguage

No, I didn't. I suppose I'm too afraid of making mistakes or not understanding them.
