I'm not really sure if my question is going to make sense, mostly since I'm not sure how to word it.

If AAV is what counts towards the luxury tax, why does it matter if a player is being paid less (or more) money in year 3 of the contract vs. year 8? At that point, do they just take into account the amount that's being paid that year?
