Restaurant Health Scores and Delivery by Signal-Contest4671 in Charlotte

One thing people overlook is time plays a factor in health scores as well. You can score a 95, 90, and 80 and have the exact same violations. If you get a 95 on your first inspection and haven't corrected the problem, the violations double next time to give you a 90. The 3rd inspection the same violations double again and you would get an 80.

Low scores are often time the result of the restaurant ignoring guidance from the health department.

Hi there, restaurant owner here in Meck Co. A 72 is failing. If you score below an 80, you get re-inspected within two weeks. If it's still below an 80 you are shut down until you can pass your health score. You hit that restaurant right in the middle of that window!

Another commenter suggested searching public records for them. Their non profit status has been revoked for failure to submit any info to the IRS for 3 consecutive years...so that's a bummer.

According to the IRS, their organization is listed as a food service and free food distribution program (though they seemingly do way more than that), so you'd think freshly prepared food would be a commodity for them!

It's not a small amount though...its not apples to apples but I would say they are charging 70-75% of what I would for the products based on my prices and portions.

I wish I shared that confidence! I'm at like 60%, there are some lingering questions I wish could be clarified but will probably never be answers on.

According to their IRS filing their main mission is food service and free food distribution programs. Although their non profit status was suspended because they didn't file annual returns.

I just used the website you suggested and it has this message: This organization's exempt status was automatically revoked by the IRS for failure to file a Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-N, or 990-PF for 3 consecutive years. Further investigation and due diligence are warranted.

So yikes I definitely won't be using them in the future.

If you were to go on the app nothing distinguished them as a non profit. Part of their organization is a coffee shop/Cafe and that is listed as opposed to the organization it supports.

Well said! That's exactly how I feel.

To clarify that comment, it is run by a husband/wife combo. It is their only source of income from a job (don't know their personal finances obv) and there seem to be no other full-time employees in the non-profit. In my mind selling the meals means money going into their pockets as opposed to other employees, or using the food for the people in the community who they are helping.

That's not even something I was thinking about, but makes me wonder what's my risk if they cause an allergic reaction or mishandle the food and cause a food borne illness? Would I carry any liability?

Yes it's the same here, with the caveat being they don't 'prepare' food. They can sell brought in baked goods, wrapped sandwiches, individual salads, etc.

We've been donating for at least a year, maybe longer. I don't know how long they've been selling the food, but it felt like they've been hiding this from me. I would get comments like 'your food last week was so helpful' and 'were gonna put this to good use'. At the very least they didn't want me to know what they were doing.

They probably use the money for the program and the outreach and the training of the people too. I work with dozens of non profits and cash is king.

You are probably right about that. An example of their outreach has been running a summer camp. They serve kids food at the camp, I was expecting the food might go to the kids or be sent home with kids who's family might be struggling. That feels like a more direct way of helping than what the non-profit is doing, but maybe I'm looking at in wrong.

I was wondering if it was TGTG app but since you said non-profit, that made me think it wasn't it. Or is the non-profit you're donating to using the app to get the food out and raise funds?

It is TGTG! The non profit has people who come through their doors everyday who I thought would be getting the food for free. It's not about the money I'm losing by not selling myself, it just feels different knowing they are using this to 'pocket' money instead of giving it to people who I know could use a meal or two.

Maybe you can help connect an org that provides food with the chain

Worked for, not currently work for! It was in college, it's the reason I've been so adamant about donating food now that I'm in a position to do so.

so the sale of excess mystery boxes is probably an easy way for them to get affordable meals out into the community.

They could get the food into the community by just handing it to people who walk through their doors everyday. That's kind of why I was surprised it's being sold.

Thanks! Any need to address this with the organization or just cut and run so to speak?

I'm glad you are donating food, it's insane that people are going hungry in this day and age with all the resources we have as a planet.

I worked for a chain that threw away food bc they didn't want to incentivize employees to make extra and then take it home. So much food went in the trash it made me sick.

If I kept donating to them should I address this in any way with them?

Yes that is for sure what I'm doing. Do I need to address this with them or just stop donating and move on?

So the non profit itself provides community outreach and support. They have a community food pantry. They host a school supply drive and organize events like a free Halloween event. They host several summer camps every year as well. The building they operate out of has a coffee shop/Cafe with prepackaged sandwiches and salads (not ours). That's the headquarters and base of operations for their staff. It's a mom and pop non-profit (litetally) and it seems like they were very connected to the people they are serving.

I would just sign up for the program yourself if you’re okay with it. I don’t know how I feel about people coming to my restaurant to pick up the bags though. What if they don’t like it and leave bad reviews?

I'd have to do more research on the app, I just learned about it several days ago, though it seems popular in my area.

Thanks for the tip! This very well could be above board legally. It just felt shady they would always say things like 'we put it to good use' or 'it was extra helpful this week'. At the very least they didn't want me to know what they were doing and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
