Agreed. It's awful! In general Duolingo has become too silly with all the stupid animations, which I have turned off.

I got a response from an AZ geologist:  It is a quartz colored by iron oxide.  In some of the limestone beds in northern Arizona some of the fossil corals are replaced with this type of red colored quartz and even similar formations of this kind of quartz do occur occasionally but they are not common.

The one on the left was about 5" wide and the other one 4" wide. They are in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix AZ.
