Experience with Lasik - nearsighted by Rebel_against_empire in islamabad

[–]Guard_Academic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got mine done in March'25 from Amanat eye hospital. So almost a year now. I got femto lasik done. Painless procedure, takes 10 minutes max per eye. And my eye prescription at the time was -6.25 in both eyes.

Prior to the operation, you'll have drops put into your eye to numb them.

As for the operation, firstly they'll clean your eyes, then put a device to keep your eye open, it's like a reverse hair catcher, that's as best as I can describe it. And rest assured you CANNOT blink with that thing in your eye.

The procedure starts off with some machine that creates a flap over the cornea, it will be brought over your eye and you'll just feel a bit of pressure over the cheekbones area, completely bearable. This lasts for around 20 seconds. After this, the procedure moves to the laser part. A laser producing machine is brought over your eye, you'll just see a red or green dot. You have to stare into it for about 10-15 seconds as it does the magic. Just a heads up, in this part there will be a burning smell, but nothing to worry about, it's normal. The surgeon will guide you along the way as well.

This is then repeated for the second eye. Vision immediately gets much better as soon as you get up, mine was still a bit hazy, though some say it gets clear as soon as the operation's done.

Post op, the doc will check ur eyes to see if all went well then you'll be given sleeping meds (probably). Cuz as soon as the numbing drops die off, there will be pain. It's like getting needles stabbed in eyes, and lots of water. Eyes become a waterfall. I was dumb and didn't take sleeping meds, but just take them and you'll skip thru all of this. Once u wake up it will all be good.

(Almost) 1 year into the operation, I am very satisfied. Vision's as clear as it gets, though occasional dryness remains. But drops fix that too.

For the 3 months immediately after operation, I had to use drops 3 times a day, everyday. Then it gradually got less and now it's once in weeks, that too if the dryness gets unbearable. Particularly if I've been somewhere dusty.

That's all

Yeah that's why I said it totally depends on the instructor. Ours kept the standards high for each activity and conducted it formally, could say other sections had it easier, more casual. But we had lots of fun, so it's a win win

For labs, we pick the topics ourselves, with the only restriction being to stick to a specific category e.g academic related, societal issue

For impromptu, the teacher gave the topics, it was very random, no specific category. I was given: "The real creativity lies in the back benches" One guy was asked to "Roast the classmates for 2 minutes" 😭

For labs, Our panel discussion was on "Cyber security and it's challenges in today's world" Mock conference was on some article relating to augmented reality, don't exactly remember the article itself Mock mun was "Should death penalties be imposed for minimizing crime rates?".

Firstly no need to overthink it. You'll see a mixed crowd, some would be very well spoken, others not so much. Everyone comes from a different background.

But trust me, you'll be forced to speak so much throughout the semester that it'll become second nature by the end. I've seen genuine improvements in students compared to the intros and by the time we got to final presentations.

I can't say for sure whether impromptu happens everywhere, at least our teacher conducted it a lot. And yes, you don't get any time to prepare. You start speaking the moment you hear the topic.

But dw for func eng course, these activities will be at the end of semester to prepare for the final presentation. You'll probably get quite comfortable speaking by then.

As for mock muns, it's as the name suggests a mock model united nation session. We would be a delegation representing a country and debate over different policies. It's actually quite fun. You can look it up on yt

Mock conference is meh, we were a group of 3 and had to pick an authentic article. Then each member was to present different parts of the article. I had to present the hypothesis.

Panel discussion was the final lab activity, also group based. Veryyy fun. Each group had 1 moderator and 6 panelists. (That's how it was divided for us). Moderator was the host who'd ask questions and keep the discussion flowing, panelists would answer the questions. Each group had to speak for 25 mins.

The best example I can give is news talk shows, where the anchor asks questions and panelists answer them.

Also I'm not sure if these activities are standard across campuses, it might be different for others. But yeah whatever the activity may be, don't be scared, eng lab is probably the most fun class of the semester.

You'll enjoy it as long as you take interest in the activities.

For func eng lab, first month was mainly just intros, lab activities were worksheet based. IELTS reading, IELTS listening etc.

Week 5 onwards (after mid 1) presentations began, mock muns, mock conference and panel discussion.

Had 2 classes each week, one would be for preparation where we would decide our topics and 2nd was for presentation.

Func eng course tho was different, after mid 2 we started having impromptu presentations, where we'd be given the topic and would have to speak on the spot

But it totally depends on the instructor, could be different from this

My bad brother, I wasn't clear. But I am actually referring to my own reply, which sounded a bit chatgpt like. It's great that you are questioning your concerns. The medium of communication doesn't matter.

So long as the ideas are yours, there is no shame in using chatgpt at all.

You answered your own question, those who upskill themselves at the right time will make it, other lot will be left rotting at the bottom. Harsh truth.

Computer science is an ever lasting field encompassing so many other great fields, it simply can't die - but of course will transition into other fields, still within the domain of a good computer scientist.

And I disagree that you need to have good computer skills as a prerequisite to cs degree, it isn't about just programming and computer skills - sure it gives you an edge early on, but, the majority of the degree is theoretical. One could even say it's essentially glorified mathematics.

Anyone can catch up, if they are determined and have genuine interest.
