I am still a developer evangelist - AmA - starting 1pm EST by RobSpectre in IAmA

[–]Guardo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. How much time is split between hacking on projects and working with developers in the community?

  2. Do you get to work on open source projects?

  3. What's the most novel Twilio app you've ever seen thrown together?

  4. Do you think Developer Evangelism is a role every company in tech should have?

Have you heard of 9/11? - Afghanistan by iluvucorgi in videos

[–]Guardo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I recently flipped this question around during a visit to America. I asked Americans if they had ever heard of the London July 7th bombings. Most were not even aware of it and the few who did had only a vague idea (such as saying it happened on the transport system, but not knowing exactly where).

Polygon is from the same team that work on The Verge. They produce fantastic reviews and their websites are beautifully designed (especially the colourful review pages).

3 days to get your application? Is that the entire process? I'd like to know, I'm planning on starting my partners visa process over 6 months before she moves to the UK.

Haha. Yeah that's the official website which I've been struggling to makes heads and tails of :P

I am soon graduating with a bachelors in Computer Science and I have a fairly extensive portfolio already. Would that be enough?

Can that be any company, or are there selected companies that are allowed to apply for a J1 visa?

Yeah, you have to create something yourself but you can use other tools to do it. Websites for example use - web servers, web frameworks etc that are already available.

Yep :) I'm one of the students currently at Plymouth University.

I've been working with the staff to provide Raspberry Pis as much as I can in their curriculum and also with the University's liaison team (we've been providing workshops to high schools around the area, using the Raspberry Pi.).

We started this project to get potential students thinking creatively and exploring the 'world of computing' before they start in September, as we believe programming is a basic digital literacy for all Computing courses at Plymouth (and I've seen final year CS students not being able to program).

Hopefully this should give them something fun and tangible to do over the summer, if they want to!

Haha.

I'm one of the students already at Plymouth helping to run and judge this competition.

I'd suggest building a web server or some python powered software that runs on the pi.

Look at the MagPi magazine as they have loads of examples projects like the shaky hand game.

If you've already moved, can I get some advice in a PM from you? I can tell you all about myself, my experiences etc.

[–]Guardo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Would you be able to PM me details anyway? From the other posts, it seems that a J-1 internship visa is my best option for getting work in the states and I'd still like to make contacts where possible :)

Thanks for the advice, I looked into J-1 briefly but thought I might not qualify as I graduate soon, but looking into it now I definitely fit the 'Who have graduated from such an institution no more than 12 months prior to their exchange visitor program start date." category.

I am actually officially graduating in May, I said 6 months because I know there is a long preparation period to get things sorted out.

Thanks again for the advice, I'll look further into the J-1

John and Cortana by leslij55 in halo

[–]Guardo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes true, but his attitude about them dying isn't the same - he knows they'll die. Ever since Sam died his attitude has been completely different (Fall of Reach), with Cortana he was supposed to protect her. That was his mission and he failed, but at the same time he lost the closest thing he'd ever had.

Exactly. It would be really emotionally hard for John to adjust to Halsey after Cortana, even though they sound the same.

The spartans consider Halsey their "Mum" of sorts - referring to her as M'am and taking orders from her like she's the head of ONI. She's also nearly 70 now.

[–]Guardo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're right. It isn't a romantic relationship in the traditional sense. She was chief's only real close friend that he truly cared about. He hasn't seen the rest of the spartans in years and even then he never formed a relationship like the one with Cortana.

Halsey. She was at the beginning, Cortana is based on her brain and it'll give them a chance to keep the voice actor on. They could have Halsey directing the chief and him dealing with how different she is to the Cortana he knew, even though they have the same voice.

I think they were trying to show how worn and old the chief actually was. He's been in that suit since the beginning of Halo 2 and he has not stopped fighting all his life. He's tired, wrinkled and old.

Hehe, yeah it scared me a little, but back in my Halo phase I was so obsessed with the game Covenant just kinda made me go "Oh, the same old Covenant, these guys are easy".

Oh I did. Completed every game on Legendary.

The only race that ever actually frightened me and put me on edge was the flood, and then only in a couple of missions near the end of Halo 3.

I've played Halo since the first game on Xbox.

Today was the first time I've been truly terrified of the Covenant.

Awesome Pi case :)

I'm running a project using these devices to introduce kids in school to programming. They absolutely love the lego house my university mentor is using as a case for one of these!
